Peperomia pellucida(L.) Kunth and eye diseases: A review on phytochemistry, pharmacology and toxicology

Peperomia pellucida(L.) Kunth is a medicinal plant used to manage inflammatory illnesses such as conjunctivitis, and gastrointestinal and respiratory tract disorders in tropical and subtropical ***, little is known about its pharmacological mechanism of action against eye diseases. This review aims to critically discuss the phytochemistry, pharmacology and toxicology of P. pellucida as well as its roles in the treatment of cataract, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Recent developments in the uses of P. pellucida for healthcare and nutraceutical products by the pharmaceutical industry are also covered in this review. For this review, a literature search was performed with PubMed, ScienceDirect, SciFinder Scholar and Scopus databases, using relevant keywords. Among the various phytochemicals identified from P. pellucida, β-caryophyllene, carotol, dillapiole, ellagic acid, pellucidin A, phytol and vitexin exhibit strong pharmacological activities within the mitogen-activated protein kinase and nuclear factor-κB signalling pathways in inflammatory eye diseases. The antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant,antihyperglycemic and anti-angiogenic activities displayed by P. pellucida extracts in many in vitro,in vivo and clinical studies suggest its potential role in the management of inflammatory eye diseases.P. pellucida extract was non-toxic against normal cell lines but displayed mild toxicity in animal *** growing public interest in P. pellucida has inspired the nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries to process the plant into health products. Although the potential pharmacological mechanisms against eye diseases have been summarized, further studies of the interactions among constituent phytochemicals from P. pellucida within various signalling pathways shall support the use of the plant as an alternative therapeutic source.

Metabolic and physiological regulation of Chlorella sp.(Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta) under nitrogen deprivation

A freshwater green microalgae Chlorella sp., UMACC344 was shown to produce high lipid content and has the potential to be used as feedstock for biofuel production. In this study, photosynthetic effciency, biochemical pro?les and non-targeted metabolic pro?ling were studied to compare between the nitrogen-replete and deplete conditions. Slowed growth, change in photosynthetic pigments and lowered photosynthetic effciency were observed in response to nitrogen deprivation. Biochemical pro?les of the cultures showed an increased level of carbohydrate, lipids and total fatty acids, while the total soluble protein content was lowered. A trend of fatty acid saturation was observed in the nitrogen-deplete culture with an increase in the level of saturated fatty acids especially C16:0 and C18:0, accompanied by a decrease in proportions of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Fifty-nine metabolites, including amino acids, lipids, phytochemical compounds, vitamins and cofactors were signi?cantly dysregulated and annotated in this study. Pathway mapping analysis revealed a rewiring of metabolic pathways in the cells, particularly purine, carotenoid, nicotinate and nicotinamide, and amino acid metabolisms. Within the treatment period of nitrogen deprivation, the key processes involved were reshu ? ing of nitrogen from proteins and photosynthetic machinery, together with carbon repartitioning in carbohydrates and lipids.

Elderly patients over 80 years undergoing colorectal cancer resection: Development and validation of a predictive nomogram for survival

BACKGROUND Surgery remains the primary treatment for localized colorectal cancer(CRC).Improving surgical decision-making for elderly CRC patients necessitates an accurate predictive *** To build a nomogram to predict the overall survival of elderly patients over 80 years undergoing CRC *** Two hundred and ninety-five elderly CRC patients over 80 years undergoing surgery at Singapore General Hospital between 2018 and 2021 were identified from the American College of Surgeons–National Surgical Quality Improvement Program(ACS-NSQIP)*** variables were selected using univariate Cox regression,and clinical feature selection was performed by the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression.A nomogram for 1-and 3-year overall survival was constructed based on 60%of the study cohort and tested on the remaining 40%.The performance of the nomogram was evaluated using the concordance index(C-index),area under the receiver operating characteristic curve(AUC),and calibration *** groups were stratified using the total risk points derived from the nomogram and the optimal cut-off *** curves were compared between the high-and low-risk *** Eight predictors:Age,Charlson comorbidity index,body mass index,serum albumin level,distant metastasis,emergency surgery,postoperative pneumonia,and postoperative myocardial infarction,were included in the *** AUC values for the 1-year survival were 0.843 and 0.826 for the training and validation cohorts,*** AUC values for the 3-year survival were 0.788 and 0.750 for the training and validation cohorts,respectively.C-index values of the training cohort(0.845)and validation cohort(0.793)suggested the excellent discriminative ability of the *** curves demonstrated a good consistency between the predictions and actual observations of overall survival in both training and validation cohorts.A significant difference in overall survival wa

Assessing Financial Performance of Malaysian Islamic and Conventional Commercial Banks Using Financial Ratios

A rapid growth of Islamic banking has led the Malaysian economy to gaining greater prosperity than before. Presently, there are more than 20 Islamic banks operating in Malaysia. Financial ratios calculated from the categories of liquidity, profitability, risk and solvency, and efficiency of banks can be used to gauge the overall financial performance of the banking industry. The objective is to assess the overall performance of Islamic banks as well as conventional banks in Malaysia using financial ratios. The findings indicated that conventional commercial banks in Malaysia do have better quality assets, are more liquid, and are more profitable than Islamic banks. Total expenses in conventional banks are much higher, which may affect profitability and the significant amount of non-performing loans （NPLs）, thus increasing solvency risk. The findings show positive insights of Islamic banks, whose confidence and trust are rising, over a short period with strong improvements in asset utilization, effective management, and expenditure control. This comparative study clearly identified that conventional banks are better financial performers compared to Islamic banks in Malaysia during the period of 2006-2010.

Adaptive transfer learning framework for dense prediction of human activity recognition

Human activity recognition(har)for dense prediction is proven to be of good performance,but it relies on labeling every point in time series with the high *** addition,the performance of har model will show significant degradation when tested on the sensor data with different distribution from the training data,where the training data and the test data are usually collected from different sensor locations or sensor ***,the adaptive transfer learning framework for dense prediction of har is introduced to implement cross-domain transfer,where the proposed multi-level unsupervised domain adaptation(MLUDA)approach combines the global domain adaptation and the specific task adaptation to adapt the source and target domain in multiple *** multi-connected global domain adaptation architecture is proposed for the first time,which can adapt the output layer of the encoder and the decoder in dense prediction *** this,the specific task adaptation is proposed to ensure alignment of each class centroid in source domain and target domain by introducing the cosine distance loss and the moving average *** on three public har datasets demonstrate that the proposed MLUDA improves the prediction accuracy of target data by 20%compared to the source domain pre-trained model and it is more effective than the other three deep transfer learning methods with an improvement of 10%to 18%in accuracy.

Rheological behavior of Shengli coal-solvent slurry at low-temperatures and atmospheric pressure

We report the results from systematic studies of Shengli lignite coal-solvent slurries. Solvent type, temperature, coal to solvent ratio, particle granularity, shear rate and shear time were investigated. The viscosity of the solvents is time independent. However, the slurries are thixotropic. A change from pseudo-plastic to Newtonian behavior occurs as the temperature, or as the solvent to coal ratio, increases. The solvent used in the slurry affects the point at which the rheology changes from pseudo-plastic to Newtonian. The REC slurry changes at 1:1.2 coal to solvent ratio and at 40 °C. The har slurry changes at a 1:1.5 ratio and at 60 °C. The rheology of the slurries is pseudo-plastic at low shear rates but Newtonian at high shear rates.

In generator design field,waveform total harmonic distortion(THD)and telephone harmonic factor(THF)are parameters commonly used to measure the impact of generator no-load voltage harmonics on the power communication *** hydrogenerators are considered the optimal generator for exploiting low-head,high-flow hydro resources,and they have seen increasingly widespread application in China's power systems recent ***,owing to the compact and constrained internal space of such generators,their internal magnetic-field harmonics are ***,accurate calculation of their THD and THF is crucial during the analysis and design stages to ensure the quality of power *** in the electromagnetic field finite element modeling analysis of such generators,the type and order of the finite element meshes may have a significant impact on the THD and THF calculation results,which warrants in-depth *** address this,this study takes a real 34 MW large tubular hydrogenerator as an example,and establishes its electromagnetic field finite element model under no-load *** types of meshes,five mesh densities,and two mesh orders are analyzed to reveal the effect of electromagnetic field finite element mesh types and orders on the calculation results of THD and THF for such generators.

This paper focuses on the problem of delay- dependent robust D-stabilization for a class of descriptor discrete-time linear systems with polytopic uncertainties and multiple state delays. New delay-dependent D-stability criteria are presented, and thereby, the problem of D-stabilization is solved. It is shown that the addressed problem can be solved if the corresponding developed linear matrix inequalities are feasible. The presented robust D-stabilizing state feedback control law guarantees the closed loop systems is robustly D-stable in spite of parameter uncertainties and state delays. Numerical examples are employed to show the usefulness of the proposed results.
