Electroless Ni-Fe-P alloys in an alkaline bath were plated. The effects of deposition parameters on the plating rate and the coating composition were examined. The weight loss test and the anodic polarization measurement of the deposits in 3.5 wt pct NaCI solution (ph7.0) showed that the deposits with the mole ratio of NiS04/FeSO4 being 0.07:0.03, ph8.0 and 7.5 possess better corrosion resistance than that of the other deposits and the Ni-Fe-P deposits did not form passive films in this environment. In 5.0 wt pct NaOH solution, the Ni-Fe-P deposits have better corrosion resistance and formed passive films.

A dynamic sorption experiment was performed for removal of uranium （VI or 6＋） from a leachate from an alum shale landfill with a diatomite-bentonite based sorbent in a laboratory scale. Such material was grounded and treated chemically with H3PO4 （phosphoric acid） and thermally for improving its porosity and resistance to water flow. A specific surface area of 209 m2·g-1 was determined by the BET method. A sorption capacity of 30 μg·gl and 0.6 μg·g-1 was obtained at a ph of 7.5 and 4 respectively by means of Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The flow rate was 3 mL·min-1 was effective for controlling the ph inside of the column. The sorption mechanism was investigated along with desorption of the element of interest for further process design considerations for a treatment unit on the landfill site.

The magnetic, electrical and thermal transport properties of the perovskite La0.7Ca0.3Mn0.9Cr0.1O3 have been investigated by measuring dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, the magnetoresistance and thermal conductivity in the temperature range of 5-300 K. The spin glass behaviour with a spin freezing temperature of 70 K has been well confirmed for this compound, which demonstrates the coexistence and competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic clusters by the introduction of Cr. Colossal magnetoresistance has been observed over the temperature range investigated. The introduction of Cr causes the \"double-bump\" feature in electrical resistivity p(T). Anomalies on the susceptibility and the thermal conductivity associated with the double-bumps in p(T) are observed simultaneously. The imaginary part of ac susceptibility shows a sharp peak at the temperature of insulating-metallic transition where the first resistivity bump was observed, but it is a deep-set valley near the temperature where the second bump in p(T) emerges. The thermal conductivity shows an increase below the temperature of the insulating metallic transition, but the phonon scattering is enhanced accompanying the appearance of the second peak of double-bumps in p(T). We relate those observed in magnetic and transport properties of La0.7Ca0.3Mn0.9Cr0.1O3 to the spin-dependent scattering. The results reveal that the spin-phonon interaction may be of more significance than the electron (charge)-phonon interaction in the mixed perovskite system.

Internationally earthquake insurance,like all other insurance (fire,auto),adopted actuarial approach in the past, which is,based on historical loss experience to determine insurance *** to the fact that earthquake is a rare event with severe consequence,irrational determination of premium rate and lack of understanding scale of potential loss led to many insurance companies insolvent after Northridge earthquake in 1994. Along with recent advances in earth science,computer science and engineering,computerized loss estimation methodologies based on first principles have been developed to the point that losses from destructive earthquakes can be quantified with reasonable accuracy using scientific modeling techniques. This paper intends to introduce how engineering models can assist to quantify earthquake risk and how insurance industry can use this information to manage their risk in the United States and abroad.

Polycystic liver disease (PLD) is characterized by the presence of multiple bile duct-derived epithelial cysts scattered in the liver parenchyma. PLD can manifest itself in patients with severe autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Isolated autosomal dominant polycystic liver disease (ADPLD) is genetically distinct from PLD associated with ADPKD, although it may have similar pathogenesis and clinical ***, mutations in two causative genes for ADPLD,independently from ADPKD, have been identified. We report here a family (a mother and her daughter) with a severe form of ADPLD not associated with ADPKD produced by a novel missense protein kinase C substrate 80K-H (PRKCSH) mutation (R281W). This mutation causes a severe phenotype, since the two affected subjects manifested signs of portal hypertension. Doppler sonography, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging are effective in documenting the underlying lesions in a non-invasive way.
