This paper starts with a brief description of what a database is followed by a short history of the development of the database system and its use; it also notes the proliferation of various kinds of databases in the 1990s. It then goes on to outline the background of establishing a Pearl River Delta Collection at the City University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Lingnan College. One of the tasks in this project is to build up a database of Pearl River Delta-related materials available in all the UPGC(University and Polytechnic Grant Committee)libraries in Hong Kong. The database design and structure are described, and the problems associated with data collection, source data, and updating together with their solutions are explained.

By taking Daan city in Jilin Province as a research object and by using TM image in 1989 and ETM + image in 2001 from American LANDSAT satellite,all kinds of maps and documentation,information of grassland,saline-alkalized land,cropland,water area and forestland is extracted by man-computer interactive interpretation method with ArcView and ArcInfo GIS software, and statistics data is acquired. On the basis of this the changing trend of land use types in the next ten years is forecasted and analyzed with Markov model. The results indicate that the problem of grassland degradation in the study area is quite serious.

＜正＞An improvement over classical dynamic feedback linearization for the control of a nonholonomic mobile robot is proposed. The use of a state extension of higher dimension than in the case of dynamic feedback linearization helps reject constant disturbances on the rotational axis of the robot. The proposed dynamic extension acts as a velocity scheduler for the robot. It specifies at each time instant the ideal translational velocity that the robot should have. By having a two -dimensional state extension,both the magnitude and the orientation of the velocity vector can be generated, which accounts for improved robustness.

Tactile allodynia,defined as a pain or a nociceptive response provoked by an innocuous mechanical stimulus,in addition to hyperalgesia and spontaneous pain,is one of the common features of peripheral neuropathy in hu-mans following peripheral nerve *** many respects it is the development of exquisite sensitivity to light touch that many patients with post herpetic neuralgia,partial nerve trauma,and metabolic and inflammatory neuropa-thies find particularly *** is a pain hypersensi-tivity that is,moreover,resistant to most current forms of *** enormous breakthrough in our understanding of the pathophysiology of neuropathic pain in general,and tactile allodynia in particular,has come through the rec-ognition that the mechanical hypersensitivity is mediated by low-threshold,large myelinated Aβ*** high-ly specialized sensory fibers normally never produce pain and are responsible for the detection of light touch,move- ment of hairs,pressure,flutter,and vibration [1] .However,after nerve damage,activation of these afferents elicits *** major question then is what mechanisms are responsible for converting sensory processing within the somatosensory system such that low-threshold Aβmechanoreceptors elicit pain?
