Yield enhancement of droughted wheat by film antitrans.irant application: rationale and evidence

Extens.ve res.arch in the 20th century explored the potential for mitigation of drought by applying polymers.(film antitrans.irants. to leaves.to reduce water los.. It was.concluded that film antitrans.irants.are of limited us.fulnes., s.nce the polymers.reduced photos.nthes.s.(in addition to trans.iration) and this.was.as.umed to be detrimental to growth and yield. We propos., however, that irres.ective of reduced as.imilate availability from photos.nthes.s. the mos. drought s.ns.tive s.age of yield formation in wheat may res.ond pos.tively to antitrans.irant application. s.x field experiments.involved ap-plying the film antitrans.irant di-1-p-menthene at five development s.ages.and 10 s.il mois.ure deficits.(s.D) in total over three years. Yield was.reduced when the film antitrans.irant was.applied at development s.ages.les.-s.ns.tive to drought, from inflores.ence emergence to anthes.s. cons.s.ent with the conclus.ons.from previous.res.arch. In contras., yield was.increas.d when the film antitrans.irant was.applied at flag leaf s.age, jus. before the s.age mos. s.ns.tive to drought (boot s.age). Thes. res.lts.s.ow that film antitrans.irant has.the potential to mitigate drought effects.on yield of wheat.
