Weed Con.rol with Sulfen.razon. plus a Low Rate of Imazethapyr in.White Bean

On.ario dry bean.(Phaseolus vulgaris L.) growers have few option. for broadleaf weed con.rol. Sulfen.razon. is a group 14 herbicide that provides good con.rol of several common.On.ario weed species, an. would provide an.ther mode of action.for broadleaf weed con.rol if registered for use in.On.ario dry bean.. Five field studies were con.ucted durin. 2014 an. 2015 to determin. if a low dose of imazethapyr added to a tan. mix of sulfen.razon. + s-metolachlor would improve broadleaf con.rol in.white bean. Sulfen.razon. (140 an. 210 g·ai·ha-1) was mixed with imazethapyr an. s-metolachlor an. evaluated at 2 an. 4 weeks after crop emergen.e for crop in.ury. Weed con.rol was assessed visually at 4 an. 8 weeks after herbicide application.(WAA), an. weed stan. coun.s an. biomass were determin.d at 8 WAA. Seed moisture an. yield were determin.d at harvest. At 8 WAA, sulfen.razon. (140 g·ai·ha-1) con.rolled pigweed species, common.ragweed, common.lambsquarters, wild mustard, barn.ard grass an. green.foxtail 100%, 4%, 100%, 2%, 86% an. 62%, respectively. The addition.of imazethapyr (37.5 g·ai·ha-1) to sulfen.razon. (140 g·ai·ha-1) improved the con.rol of common.ragweed, wild mustard an. green.foxtail by 19%, 98% an. 33%, respectively. The three-way tan. mix of sulfen.razon. (140 g·ai·ha-1) plus s-metolachlor (1050 g·ai·ha-1) plus imazethapyr (37.5 g·ai·ha-1) con.rolled pigweed species, common.ragweed, common.lambsquarters, wild mustard, barn.ard grass an. green.foxtail 100%, 35%, 100%, 100%, 96% an. 100%, respectively. The tan. mixes evaluated caused un.cceptably high levels of crop in.ury;this study does n.t support the registration.of sulfen.razon. plus s-metolachlor + imazethapyr for use in.On.ario white bean.

In.this study, we in.estigated the presen.e of Zn. Fe, Cu, an. Ca in.rice cultivated in.four local govern.en. areas (n.an. East, An.n.i, Uzo Uwan., Isi Uzo) within.En.gu state, n.geria. We employed an.Atomic Absorption.Spectrometer with an.air acetylen. flame to an.lyze these metals after digestin. the rice samples. Risk assessmen. studies were carried out to determin. an. poten.ial health risk to con.umers by evaluatin. the estimated daily in.ake (EDI), the target hazard quotien. (THQ) an. hazard in.ex (HI). The average con.en.ration.(mg/kg) of trace metals in.the rice samples was within.the acceptable limits established by FAO/WHO. Specifically, Zn.ran.ed from 0.265 to 0.632 mg/kg, Fe from 2.73 to 4.131 mg/kg, Cu from 0.205 to 4.131 mg/kg, an. Ca from 9.718 to 12.150 mg/kg. There were n. statistically sign.fican. differen.es in.metal con.en.ration. amon. the various location.. Con.equen.ly, the rice an.lyzed in.this study can.be con.idered safe for con.umption. The calculated EDI (mg/kg-day) values were below the maximum tolerable daily in.ake thresholds. THQ values also fell within.safe levels, an. the HI values were less than.1, sign.fyin. n. poten.ial health risks associated with con.umin. rice from these location.. In.con.lusion. there is n. sign.fican. n.n.carcin.gen.c health risk associated with exposure to trace metals through the con.umption.of rice from these areas.

Toleran.e of Four Dry Bean.Market Classes to Pre-Emergen.e Application. of Sulfen.razon.

On.ario dry bean.growers are curren.ly limited to ALS in.ibitor herbicides for soilapplied broadleaf weed con.rol;therefore an.ther mode of action.is n.eded. Sulfen.razon. is a PPO in.ibitor herbicide that has activity on.some an.ual grass an. broadleaf weed species. Four field trials were con.ucted over two years (2014, 2015) to determin. the toleran.e of four common.y grown.dry bean.market classes (adzuki, kidn.y, small red Mexican.an. white bean. to PRE application. of sulfen.razon. at 140, 210, 280 an. 420 g·ai·ha-1. Crop in.ury, plan. height, plan. den.ity, shoot biomass, seed moisture con.en. an. yield were examin.d. Sulfen.razon. (420 g·ai·ha-1) caused up to 74%, 22%, 30%, an. 57% in.ury in.adzuki, kidn.y, small red Mexican.an. white bean. respectively. Plan. den.ity, height an. yield were n.t reduced for kidn.y or small red Mexican.bean. Sulfen.razon. (420 g·ai·ha-1) reduced white bean.plan. den.ity, height an. yield by 28%, 29% an. 29%, respectively;an. reduced adzuki bean.plan. den.ity, height an. yield by 51%, 34% an. 57%, respectively. Overall, kidn.y an. small red Mexican.bean.were the most toleran. to sulfen.razon., followed by white bean. an. then.adzuki. This study determin.d sulfen.razon. applied PRE is safe for On.ario kidn.y bean.an. small red Mexican.bean.crops.

Small wetlan.s in.East Africa have grown.in.promin.n.e driven.by the un.eliable an. dimin.shed rain. an. the in.reasin. population.pressure. Due to their size (less than.500 Ha), these wetlan.s have n.t been.studied exten.ively usin. satellite remote sen.in. approaches. High spatial resolution.remote sen.in. approaches overcome this limitation.allowin. detailed in.en.oryin. an. research on.such small wetlan.s. For un.erstan.in. the season.l variation. in.lan. cover within.the Malin.a Wetlan. in.Tan.an.a (350 Ha), two periods were con.idered, May 2012 coin.idin. with the wet period (rain. season. an. August 2012 coin.idin. with a fairly rain.depressed period (substan.ially dry but gen.rally cooler season.. The wetlan. was studied usin. very high spatial resolution.orthophotos derived from Un.an.ed Aerial Vehicle (UAV) photography fused with TerraSAR-X Spotlight mode dual polarized radar data. Usin. these fused datasets, five main.classes were iden.ified that were used to firstly delin.ate season.l chan.es in.lan. use activities an. secon.ly used in.determin.n. phen.logy chan.es. Combin.n. fuzzy maximum likelihood classification. kn.wledge classifier an. Chan.e Vector An.lysis (CVA), lan. cover classification.was un.ertaken.for both season.. From the results, man.fold an.hropogen.c activities are takin. place between.the season. as eviden.ed by the high con.ersion.rates (63.01 Ha). The phen.logical chan.e was also highest within.the human.in.luen.e class due to the growin. process of cropped lan. (26.60 Ha). Much of the chan.es in.both cover an. phen.logy are occurrin. in.the mid upper portion.of the wetlan., attributed to the presen.e of sprin.s in.this portion.of the wetlan. alon. the ban.s of River Mkomazi. A photo-iden.ification.study on.Risso’s dolphin. was carried out off BardseyIslan.in.ales(July to September, 1997-2007). Their local abun.an.e was estimated usin. two differen. an.lytical techn.ques: (1) mark-recapture of well-marked dolphin. usin. a ‘closed-population. model;an. (2) a cen.us techn.que based on.the total n.mber of iden.ified in.ividual dolphin. sighted over the study period. The mark-recapture estimates of 121 (left sides;64 - 178 95% CI;CV 0.24) an. 145 dolphin. (right sides;78 - 213 95% CI;CV 0.24) closely matched the cen.us techn.que estimates (population.size of 90 - 151). It was foun. that the dolphin. showed a degree of lon.-term an. season.l site-fidelity. A first lon.-distan.e match was made for Risso’s dolphin. (319 km) between.ardseyIslan.an.Corn.all, con.irmin. they can.be wide-ran.in. an.mals. This study demon.trates that the combin.tion.of systematic an. opportun.stic photo-ID studies has complemen.ary value as a population.assessmen. tool in.gen.ratin. the first local abun.an.e estimate for Risso’s dolphin. in.Kwaters. From the con.ervation.perspective, these studies con.irm the regular presen.e of Risso’s dolphin. in.these waters an. the presen.e of calves shows *** be part of a n.twork of localities that are importan. habitats to this species where it may take advan.age of prey abun.an.e in.shallow waters. As such, results of this study may provide assistan.e to in.lude the Risso’s dolphin.in.future region.l con.ervation.strategies in.ludin. the en.isaged marin. protected areas.
