Comparisons and optimization of two absorption chiller types by considering heat transfer area,exergy and economy as single-objective functions

Absorption cooling technology is an environmentally friendly method to generate continuous chilled water making use of multiple thermal sources,such as waste heat and renewable thermal *** this study,two absorption chillers(nominal capacity of 400 kW)with series and parallel connections are *** research the ideal configuration of chillers after thermodynamic analysis,the structures of the chillers are optimized using the particle swarm optimization algorithm by considering the heat transfer area(HTA),exergy efficiency and total annual cost as single-objective *** impact of temperature differences between external and internal flows,heat exchanger efficiencies and the solution allocation ratio is *** optimized HTA,coefficient of perform-ance,exergy efficiency and total annual cost are 149.0 m^(2),1.56,29.44%and$229119 for the series-connected chiller,and 146.7 m^(2),1.59,31.45%and$234562 for the parallel-connected type,*** the lowest HTA condition,compared with the reference simulation results,the energy and exergy performances are improved,while the annual total cost is *** annual total cost is highest when maximizing the exergy efficiency,which is attributed to the increase in the *** operating cost accounts for 27.42%(series type)and 26.54%(parallel type)when the annual cost is the lowest.

Organic dye pollutants present in wastewater pose a significant global challenge. Among pollutants, the synthetic dye Rhodamine B(RB) stands out due to its non-biodegradable nature and associated neurotoxic, carcinogenic,and respiratory irritant properties. Extensive research has been conducted on the efficacy of adsorption and photodegradation techniques for the removal of RB from wastewater. While adsorption and advanced oxidation processes(AOPs) have gained considerable attention for their effectiveness in recent years, the underlying behaviors and mechanisms of these technologies remain incompletely understood. Therefore, a comprehensive of recent research progress in this domain is imperative to clarify the basics and present the up-to-date *** review provides an in-depth exploration of the fundamentals, advancements, and future trajectories of RB wastewater treatment technologies, mainly encompassing adsorption and photodegradation. This work starts with a general introduction of outlining the sources, toxicity, and diverse applicable removal strategies. Subsequently, it thoroughly examines crucial techniques within non-photochemical, photochemical, and adsorption technologies, such as UV light assisted AOP, catalyst assisted AOP, ozonation, Fenton system, electrochemical AOP, and adsorption technology. The primary objective is to furnish a broad overview of these techniques,elucidating their effectiveness, limitations, and applicability. Following this, the review encapsulates state-of-theart computational simulations pertaining to RB adsorption and interactions with clays and other ***, it delves into column adsorption of RB dye, and elucidates various influencing factors, including bed height, feed concentration, pollutant(RB) feeding or flow rate, and column regeneration. Context-aware reinforcement learning for cooling operation of data centers with an Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage

Data centers are often equipped with multiple cooling units. Here, an aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) system has shown to be efficient. However, the usage of hot and cold-water wells in the ATES must be balanced for legal and environmental reasons. Reinforcement Learning has been proven to be a useful tool for optimizing the cooling operation at data centers. Nonetheless, since cooling demand changes continuously, balancing the ATES usage on a yearly basis imposes an additional challenge in the form of a delayed reward. To overcome this, we formulate a return decomposition, Cool-RUDDER, which relies on simple domain knowledge and needs no training. We trained a proximal policy optimization agent to keep server temperatures steady while minimizing operational costs. Comparing the Cool-RUDDER reward signal to other ATES-associated rewards, all models kept the server temperatures steady at around 30 °C. An optimal ATES balance was defined to be 0% and a yearly imbalance of −4.9% with a confidence interval of [−6.2, −3.8]% was achieved for the Cool 2.0 reward. This outperformed a baseline ATES-associated reward of 0 at −16.3% with a confidence interval of [−17.1, −15.4]% and all other ATES-associated rewards. However, the improved ATES balance comes with a higher energy consumption cost of 12.5% when comparing the relative cost of the Cool 2.0 reward to the zero reward, resulting in a trade-off. Moreover, the method comes with limited requirements and is applicable to any long-term problem satisfying a linear state-transition system.

Determination of riding comfort on cycleways using a smartphone application

Malus’ Law Derived from Deterministic Particle Behavior

A polarized beam of energy is usually interpreted as a set of particles, all having the same polarization state. Difference in behavior between the one and the other particle is then explained by a number of counter-intuitive quantum mechanical concepts like probability distribution, superposition, entanglement and quantized spin. Alternatively, I propose that a polarized beam is composed of a set of particles with a cosine distribution of polarization angles within a polarization area. I show that Malus’ law for the intensity of a beam of polarized light can be derived in a straightforward manner from this distribution. I then show that none of the above-mentioned counter-intuitive concepts are necessary to explain particle behavior and that the ontology of particles, passing through a polarizer, can be easily and intuitively understood. I conclude by formulating some questions for follow-up research.

Morphometric studies of 3D micro CT-scanned images can provide insights into the evolution of the brain and sensory structures but such data are still scarce for the most diverse mammalian order of *** reviewed and new data,we tested for convergence to extreme aridity and high elevation in the sensory and brain morphology of rodents,from morphometric data from micro-CT X-ray scans of 174 crania of 16 species of three distantly re-lated African murid(soft-furred mice,Praomyini,laminate-toothed rats,Otomyini,and gerbils,Gerbillinae)clades and one North American cricetid(deer mice and white-footed mice,Peromyscus)*** studies demon-strated convergent evolution acting on the oval window area of the cochlea(enlarged in extremely arid-adapted species of Otomyini and Gerbillinae)and on endocranial volume(reduced in high elevation taxa of Otomyini and Peromyscus).However,contrary to our predictions,we did notfind evidence of convergence in brain struc-ture to aridity,or in the olfactory/respiratory system(turbinate bones)to high *** structure differed,particularly in the petrosal lobules of the cerebellum and the olfactory bulbs,between Otomyini and Gerbillinae,with extreme arid-adapted species in each clade being highly divergent(not convergent)from other species in the same *** observed greater“packing”of the maxillary turbinate bones,which have important respiratory functions,in Peromyscus mice from high and low elevations compared to the high-elevation African Praomyini,but more complex patterns within Peromyscus,probably related to trade-offs in respiratory physiology and heat exchange in the nasal epithelium associated with high-elevation adaptation.
