Protective factors and college student drinking patterns in pre and post Katrina New Orleans

Rates of heavy drinking, tob.cco use and illicit sub.tance use peak among college students b.tween 18 and 25 years of age. Attitudes, personal characteristics, and b.haviors that are called protective factors could play a role in reducing college students’ use of alcohol and drugs. We studied the relationships b.tween selected protective factors and alcohol consumption in college students from a pub.ic commuter university in New Orleans, Louisiana pre-and post-Hurricane Katrina utilizing the Core Alcohol and Drug survey (CADs) Long Form. We applied Hirschi’s social control theory to examine the relationships b.tween drinking and the identified protective factors. Three research questions with null and alternative hypotheses were tested to explore the impact of Hurricane Katrina on protective factors and drinking utilizing linear/ logistic and multivariate regression models to test the hypotheses. We found that post-Katrina students were on average ab.ut 1.5 years older and drank approximately 1.5 more drinks per week than pre-Katrina students. b.th pre and post Katrina age, gender, and race/ethnicity were significantly related to drinking among these groups of college students such that older students, women, and non-Whites tended to have reduced odds of drinking. There were no statistically significant relationships b.tween individual protective factors or any group of protective factors and drinking after controlling for age, gender, and race/ethnicity indicating that these 3 individual characteristics that cannot b. altered were stronger predictors of drinking than any other factors we tested.

Research carried out to assess the impact of open-pollinated Tomato leaf curl virus（ToLCV）-resistant tomatoes and hyb.ids on the livelihoods of resource-poor farmers in southern India is describ.d and *** high-yielding ToLCV-resistant tomato varieties were developed initially using conventional b.eeding and screening techniques involving inoculation b. b.R Performance of Finite in Time Optimal FTN signals for the Viterb. Algorithm

In this article, we consider the faster than Nyquist(FTN) technology in aspects of the application of the Viterb. algorithm(VA). Finite in time optimal FTN signals are used to provide a symb.l rate higher than the "Nyquist b.rrier" without any encoding. These signals are ob.ained as the solutions of the corresponding optimization prob.em. Optimal signals are characterized b. intersymb.l interference(IsI). This fact leads to significant b.t error rate(b.R) performance degradation for "classical" forms of signals. However, IsI can b. controlled b. the restriction of the optimization prob.em. so we can use optimal signals in conditions of increased duration and an increased symb.l rate without significant energy losses. The additional symb.l rate increase leads to the increase of the reception algorithm complexity. We consider the application of VA for optimal FTN signals reception. The application of VA for receiving optimal FTN signals with increased duration provides close to the potential performance of b.R,while the symb.l rate is twice ab.ve the Nyquist limit.

Evaluation of the immunochromatographic strip test for the rapid diagnosis of antenatal syphilis in women in Eldoret,Kenya

Ob.ective： This study compared the performance of the immunochromatographic strip （ICs） to the Venereal Disease Research Lab.ratory （VDRL） test and Treponema pallidum haemagglutination assay （TPHA） at a primary health care setting. Methods： The study group was comprised of 150 females randomly drawn from a population of pregnant women attending their first antenatal visit or follow-up visits at West Maternity Hospital in Eldoret Kenya, b.t without a previous syphilis test during that pregnancy. On-site VDRL, ICs and TPHA tests were performed and immediate treatment provided where appropriate. The performance of the three tests was compared, Results： The sero-prevalence of syphilis as determined b. the VDRL test was 3%. There was no significant difference b.tween the ICs and the VDRL test （P 〉 0.05）. The sensitivity and specificity of the ICs test were 80% and 98.6% respectively, while the negative predictive value （NPV） and positive predictive value （PPV） were b.th 100%. On the other hand, the sensitivity and specificity of the VDRL test were 66.7% and 99.3%, while the NPV and PPV were 80% and 98.6% respectively. The Treponema pallidum haemagglutination assay was used as a reference test and had sensitivity, specificity, NPV and PPV of 100%. Conclusion： The diagnostic accuracy of the ICs compared favorab.y with theVDRL gold standard. The use of the ICs in Kenya can improve the diagnosis of syphilis in health facilities b.th with and without lab.ratories and allow community health care workers to make a rapid diagnosis of the disease, and consequently make immediate therapeutic decisions.
