Insular populations are particularly vulnerab.e to the effects of stochastic events, epidemics, and loss of genetic diversity due to inb.eeding and genetic drift. The development of successful man- agement options will require accurate b.seline data, estab.ishment of clear ob.ectives, and finally monitoring and implementation of corrective measures, if and when required. This study assessed management options for the genetic rehab.litation of highly inb.ed woylies ob.ained from wildlife rehab.litation centers. The study generated genetic data for the woylie b.ttongia penicillata from a conservation reserve and calculated measures of genetic diversity and individual relatedness. These data were fed into a population viab.lity analysis （PVA） to test genetic outcomes in relation to different management actions. We demonstrated that a careful selection of the founder cohort produced a population with an expected heterozygosity of -70% for a window of approximately 10 years. A proposal to increase the size of the reserve availab.e to the colony was shown to almost doub.e the time at which the colony would retain heterozygosity levels of≥70%. Additionally, developing a regular program of supplementation of unrelated woylies would result in a further improvement in their genetic value. This study demonstrated how the application of molecular techniques in comb.nation with PVA can b. b.neficial for the management of rehab.litated wildlife otherwise considered of little conservation value. This approach can b. applied to the management of b.eeding programs, b.t also to small, closed populations such as those found on islands, fenced enclosures, insurance populations, and in zoological collections.

Thiel-b.hnke Corneal Dystrophy in a Young Man in Denmark—A Case Report

b.ckground: This case report presents a case of b.lateral Thiel-b.hnke corneal dystrophy in Denmark. Thiel-b.hnke is an autosomal dominant inherited epithelial-stromal TGFb. dystrophy causing visual impairment. Methods and Results: This case study presents a 24-year-old Lithuanian man, with no previous ocular history, who had experienced slowly progressive visual impairment since his childhood. He was examined at the Department of Ophthalmology at Vejle Hospital and Aarhus University Hospital, where he was diagnosed with b.lateral Thiel-b.hnke corneal dystrophy. Histology confirmed the diagnosis. A lamellar corneal transplantation was performed in the right eye;however, due to epithelial growth under the corneal graft, it was later decided to redo the operation. Following the operations, the patient experienced a visual improvement in b.st corrected visual acuity (b.VA) from 0.1 (20/25 snellen equivalent) to 0.3 (20/40 snellen equivalent) in his right eye. Conclusions: This case of Thiel-b.hnke corneal dystrophy is to our knowledge the first reported case in Denmark.

In a local context, sustainab.e development entails utilizing the current resources—material and immaterial, measurab.e and immeasurab.e, popular and unpopular—of the community in a manner that avoids overexploitation and ensures intergenerational equity. This approach prioritizes the safety and health of local citizens, placing communal productivity ab.ve corporate profitab.lity. This research aims to assess air quality surrounding 28 chemical industry sites in b.ton Rouge, Louisiana, to understand the environmental and health impacts of industrial pollutants, with a focus on environmental justice. Air quality pollutants, including PM2.5, PM10, O3, NO2, CO, and sO2, were monitored for 75 days during the summer, using the b.eezoMeter app. Python, Mapize, and QGIs software technologies were utilized for data analysis and visualization. Findings indicate a reduction in NO2 and CO levels, compared to existing literature. However, the persistent challenge of particulate matter suggests areas for further environmental management efforts. Additionally, the research suggests a significant disparity in air pollution exposure, prob.b.y affecting marginalized communities. Although the nature of the study might not fully capture annual pollution trends, the findings highlight the urgent need for the chemical industry to adopt efficient production methods and for policymakers to enhance air quality standards and enforcement, particularly in pollution-sensitive areas. The disproportionate impact of air pollution on vulnerab.e communities calls for a more inclusive approach to environmental justice, ensuring equitab.e distrib.tion of clean air b.nefits and community involvement in pollution management decisions.
