Comparative analysis of planted and unplanted controls for assessment of rhizosphere priming effect

The rhizosphere priming effect(RPe)is increasingly being considered to be an important regulator of soil organic matter(SOM)decomposition and nutrient turnover,with potential importance for the global CO_(2) *** a result,studies on the RPe have rapidly increased in number over the last few *** of these experiments have been performed using unplanted soil as the control,which could potentially lead to incorrect assessment of the ***,we performed a greenhouse experiment to investigate how the choice of control(i.e.,unplanted control and planted control)influenced the quantification of RPe on SOM decomposition and gross nitrogen(N)mineralization,and to link this to differences in microbial and abiotic soil properties between the two *** the planted control,planted seedlings were cut at soil surface 5 d before measurement of the *** RPe on SOM decomposition was positive in pine soil and almost 2-fold higher when calculated from the planted control than from the unplanted *** spruce soil,a negative RPe on SOM decomposition was found when calculated from the planted control,while the RPe was positive when calculated from the unplanted *** RPe on gross N mineralization was found when calculated from the planted control,while a positive RPe of more than 100%was found when calculated from the unplanted *** microbial biomass and growth rate were lower,while the inorganic N content was higher in the unplanted control than in the planted *** microbial community composition and potential enzyme activity in the planted treatment and planted control were similar,but they differed significantly from those in the unplanted *** results showed that the RPe varied widely depending on the choice of control;thus,we suggest that a planted control,in which the aboveground plant parts are removed only a few days before the measurement of RPe,should be used as the control when elucidating the RPe on belowground C and N

Liver fibrosis in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease-diagnostic challenge with prognostic significance

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) is the mostcommon liver disease in the Western world, with a prevalence of 20%. In a subgroup of patients, inflammation, ballooning degeneration of hepatocytes and a varying degree of fibrosis may develop, a condition named non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Advanced liver fibrosis(stage F3) and cirrhosis(stage F4) are histologic features that most accurately predict increased mortality in both liver-related and cardiovascular diseases. Patients with advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis are at risk for complications such as hepatocellular carcinoma and esophageal varices and should therefore be included in surveillance programs. However, liver disease and fibrosis are often unrecognized in patients with NAFLD, possibly leading to a delayed diagnosis of complications. The early diagnosis of advanced fibrosis in NAFLD is therefore crucial, and it can be accomplished using serum biomarkers(e.g., the NAFLD Fibrosis Score, Fib-4 Index or BARD) or non-invasive imaging techniques(transient elastography or acoustic radiation force impulse imaging). The screening of risk groups, such as patients with obesity and/or type 2 diabetes mellitus, for NAFLD development with these non-invasive methods may detect advanced fibrosis at an early stage. Additionally, patients with a low risk for advanced fibrosis can be identified, and the need for liver biopsies can be minimized. This review focuses on the diagnostic challenge and prognostic impact of advanced liver fibrosis in NAFLD.

Factors shaping community structure of endophytic fungi–evidence from the Pinus-Viscum-system

Plant-associated fungal communities in the light of meta’omics

Iterative Subregion Correction Preconditioners with Adaptive Tolerance for Problems with Geometrically Localized Stiffness

We present a class of preconditioners for the linear systems resulting from a finite element or discontinuous Galerkin discretizations of advection-dominated *** preconditioners are designed to treat the case of geometrically localized stiffness,where the convergence rates of iterative methods are degraded in a localized subregion of the *** convergence may be caused by a number of factors,including the mesh size,anisotropy,highly variable coefficients,and more challenging *** approach taken in this work is to correct well-known preconditioners such as the block Jacobi and the block incomplete LU(ILU)with an adaptive inner subregion *** goal of these preconditioners is to reduce the number of costly global iterations by accelerating the convergence in the stiff region by iterating on the less expensive reduced *** tolerance for the inner iteration is adaptively chosen to minimize subregion-local work while guaranteeing global convergence *** present analysis showing that the convergence of these preconditioners,even when combined with an adaptively selected tolerance,is independent of discretization parameters(e.g.,the mesh size and diffusion coefficient)in the *** demonstrate significant performance improvements over black-box preconditioners when applied to several model convection-diffusion ***,we present performance results of several variations of iterative subregion correction preconditioners applied to the Reynolds number 2.25×10^(6)fluid flow over the NACA 0012 airfoil,as well as massively separated flow at 30°angle of attack.

Intermittent androgen deprivation therapy in patients with prostate cancer: Connecting the dots

Intermittent androgen deprivation therapy(IADT)is now being increasingly opted by the treating physicians and patients with prostate *** most common reason driving this is the availability of an off-treatment period to the patients that provides some relief from treatment-related side-effects,and reduced treatment *** may also delay the progression to castration-resistant prostate ***,the use of IADT in the setting of prostate cancer has not been strongly substantiated by data from clinical *** factors seem to contribute towards this inadequacy of supportive data for the use of IADT in patients with prostate cancer,e.g.,population characteristics(both demographic and clinical),study design,treatment regimen,on-and off-treatment criteria,duration of active treatment,endpoints,and *** present review article focuses on seven clinical trials that evaluated the efficacy of IADT *** androgen deprivation therapy for the treatment of prostate *** results from these clinical trials have been discussed in light of the factors that may impact the treatment outcomes,especially the disease(tumor)*** on evidence,potential candidate population for IADT has been suggested along with recommendations for the use of IADT in patients with prostate cancer.

AIM： To evaluate the effects of chlorella crude extract （CCe） on intestinal adaptation in rats subjected to short bowel syndrome （SBS）. MeTHODS： Wistar rats weighing 230-260 g were used in the study. After anesthesia a 75% small bowel resection was performed. Rats were randomized and divided into groups. Control group （n = 10）： where 5% dextrose was given through a gastrostomy tube, enteral nutrition （eN） group （n = 10）： Isocaloric and isonitrogen eN （Alitraq, Abbott, USA）, study group （n = 10）： CCe was administrated through a gastrostomy tube. Rats were sacrificed on the fifteenth pcstoperative day and blood and tissue samples were taken. Histopathologic evaluation, intestinal mucosal protein and DNA levels, intestinal proliferation and apoptosis were determined in intestinal tissues, and total protein, albumin and citrulline levels in blood were studied. ReSULTS： In rats receiving CCe, villus lengthening, crypt depth, mucosal DNA and protein levels, intestinal proliferation, and serum citrulline, protein and albumin levels were found to be significantly higher than those in control group. Apoptosis in CCe treated rats was significantly reduced when compared to eN group rats. CONCLUSION： CCe has beneficial effects on intestinal adaptation in experimental SBS.

We read with great interest the article entitled"Adverse Outcomes After Bile Spillage in Incidental Gallbladder Cancers:A Population-based Study"by Michael *** et al.,which was e-published the 13th of April,2019 in Annals of Surgery(1).This retrospective study was conducted by the University of Calgary and included all cholecystectomies performed from 2001-2015 in the region of Alberta,*** aim of the study was to evaluate if bile spillage during the index operation for presumed benign gallstone disease would affect survival in the group of patients found to have incidental gallbladder cancer.
