The geometries and electronic structures of a series of electron donor-acceptor radical molecules have been studied *** computational results show that the introduction of substituents with strong electron donating ability into tri-(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl(TTM)radicals enables the radical molecules to form the non-Aufbau electronic *** difficulty of forming the non-Aufbau electronic structure decreases with the enhancement of the electron donating ability of the substituent,but the expansion of the molecular conjugated system is not conducive to the *** hybridization of different fragments in molecular orbitals results in the disproportionation of orbital energy level and forms a staggered energy level *** electronic structure of radical molecules can be adjusted by substituents and molecular skeleton profoundly,which is a very effective means for molecular design.

During the period from 9 to 11 November 2013,an explosive cyclone(EC)occurred over the Japan Sea-Okhotsk *** EC initially formed around 18 UTC 9 November over the Japan Sea and developed over the Okhotsk Sea when moving *** had a minimum sea level pressure of 959.0 hPa,a significant deepening rate of central pressure of 2.9 Bergeron,and a maximum instantaneous wind speed of 42.7 m s−*** paper aims to investigate the conditions that contributed to the rapid development of this low-pressure system through analyses of both observations and the Weather Research Forecasting(WRF)modeling *** evolutionary processes of this EC were examined by using Final Analyses(FNL)data,Multi-Functional Transport Satellites-1R(MTSAT-1R)data,upper observation data and surface observation ***-3.5 modeling results were also used to examine the development mechanism of this *** is shown that the interaction between upper-level and low-level potential vorticity seemed to be very essential to the rapid development of this EC.

Explosive cyclones(ECs)over two basins in the Northern Hemisphere(20°-90°N)from January 1979 to December2016 are investigated using ERA-Interim and Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature(OISST)*** classical definition of an EC is modified considering not only the rapid drop of the central sea level pressure of the cyclone,but also the strong wind speed at the height of 10 m in which maximum wind speeds greater than 17.2 m s^-1are *** to the locations of the northern Atlantic and northern Pacific,the whole Northern Hemisphere is divided into the"A region"(20°-90°N,90°W-90°E)and"P region"(20°-90°N,90°E-90°W).Over both the A and P regions,the climatological features of ECs,such as their spatial distribution,intensity,seasonal variation,interannual variation,and moving tracks,are documented.

In this paper,we use FNL grid data obtained from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction(NCEP)to analyze an explosive cyclone(EC)that occurred over the northwestern Pacific Ocean from January 11 to 13,*** simulate the EC,we used the Weather Research and Forecasting model(WRFV3.5).The cyclone outbreak occurred east of Japan from January 11 to 12 and weakened near the Kamchatka Peninsula on January *** analysis results show a distinct frontal structure,in which the high potential vorticity(PV)of the upper troposphere extends downward to the surface,which can facilitate EC development.A low-level jet stream develops with the EC,which can lead to more distinct *** results of sea surface temperature(SST)sensitivity tests suggest that changes in the SST can affect cyclone intensity,but have little effect on its *** small changes are made to the SST,the air pressure at the cyclonic center responds more distinctly to an increased SST than a decreased *** results of our latent heat release test suggest that diabatic heating processes lead to maximum PV values in the lower *** heat is also one of the important factors influencing EC development.

Atmospheric Rivers(ARs) are narrow and elongated water vapor belts in troposphere with meridional transport across the mid-latitudes towards high-latitudes. Compared with ARs occurred over the northeastern Pacific, the western coast of North America and Europe, the ARs over the East Asia have received less attention. In this paper, the characteristics of ARs which affected China in the area 20?–60?N, 95?–165?E in the middle summer season from 2001 to 2016 were investigated by using European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts(ECMWF) ERA-Interim reanalysis data and Multi-functional Transport Satellites-1 R(MTSAT-1 R) infrared data. Totally, 134 ARs occurred during that period, and averagely 8.4 ARs occurred per year. Statistically, 101 ARs were in east-west orientation, and 33 ARs were in north-south orientation, which accounts for about 75% and 25%, respectively. Herein we report the occurrence number, duration time, intensity, length, width, ratio of length to width, and extension orientation of these ARs, which provide the basic information for those who have interest in ARs over the East Asia.

An Observational and Modeling Study of Extratropical Transition of Hurricane Sandy in 2012

Around 30 October 2012, Hurricane Sandy made landfall along the New Jersey shoreline after its completion of extratropical transition and transformation into an extratropical cyclone. The strong gale induced a catastrophic storm surge, and caused 72 death and damage of more than $50 billion. In this paper, the evolutionary process and spatial structure of the Hurricane Sandy during its extratropical transition were investigated by using Weather Research and Forecasting （WRF） version 3.3.1 modeling resuits and National Center for Environmental Prediction （NCEP） Coupled Forecast System model version 2 reanalysis datasets （CFSv2）. It is found that during the upper-level trough interaction on 29 October, Sandy gradually fused with a pre-existing mid-latitude low-pressure system, and finished the re-intensification. WRF modeling results showed that the second peak occurred mainly due to the enhanced vertical motion, reduced vertical wind shear as well as the supplement of potential vorticity resulting from trough interaction over the southeast of Great Lakes. The cold continental air from the back of trough was encircled within the warm core system cyclonically, forming the characteristic of warm seclusion.

In this paper, the International Comprehensive Ocean and Atmosphere Data Set(ICOADS) is utilized to investigate the horizontal distribution of sea fog occurrence frequency over the Northern Atlantic as well as the meteorological and oceanic conditions for sea fog formation. Sea fog over the Northern Atlantic mainly occurs over middle and high latitudes. Sea fog occurrence frequency over the western region of the Northern Atlantic is higher than that over the eastern region. The season for sea fog occurrence over the Northern Atlantic is generally from April to August. When sea fogs occur, the prevailing wind direction in the study area is from southerly to southwesterly and the favorable wind speed is around 8 m s-1. It is most favorable for the formation of sea fogs when sea surface temperature(SST) is 5℃ to 15℃. When SST is higher than 25℃, it is difficult for the air to get saturated, and there is almost no report of sea fog. When sea fogs form, the difference between sea surface temperature and air temperature is mainly-1 to 3℃, and the difference of 0℃ to 2℃ is the most favorable conditions for fog formation. There are two types of sea fogs prevailing in this region: advection cooling fog and advection evaporating fog.

An explosive cyclone that took place over the Northwestern Pacific from 12 UTC 18 to 18 UTC 21 November 2007 was *** synoptic situations and structure of this cyclone were documented by using the 1°×1°final analysis data of the National Center for Environmental *** cyclone developed explosively around 18 UTC 19 and reached its maximum deepening rate(MDR,1.3 Bergeron)around 06 UTC 20 November *** its MDR moment,the surface cyclone center was located in the downstream of the upper-level trough and northern entrance zone of the upper-level *** diagnosis using Zwack-Okossi equation suggested that cyclonic-vorticity advection and warm air advection acted to deepen this cyclone,while adiabatic cooling suppressed its *** an investigation of this cyclone development,numerical sensitivity results obtained by using the Weather and Research Forecasting model showed that the latent heat release in the lower level had less contribution,whereas the surface sensible and latent fluxes played important *** a warmer ocean surface,the cyclone tended to *** topography tests were designed to examine the mountain influences on the development of this cyclone:removing a mountain and doubling the height of a *** show that the Changbai Mountains suppressed the development of the cyclone by preventing the southern moisture air from invading the *** the moisture air,no latent heat release occurs when this cyclone passes over the Changbai Mountains.

A large-scale pop-up structure occurs at the front of the northern Dabashan thrust belt （NDTB）, bound by the NNE-dipping Chengkou fault to the south, and the SSW-dipping Gaoqiao fault to the north. The pop-up structure shows different features along its strike as a direct reflection of the intensity of tectonic＂ activity. To the northwest, the structure is characterized by a two-directional thrust system forming a positive flower-like structure. In contrast, the southeastern part is composed of the vertical Chengkou fault and a series of N-directed backthrusts, showing a semi-flower-like structure. We present results from Ar-Ar dating of syntectonic microthermal metamorphic sericite which show that the Chengkou fault experienced intense deformation during the mid-Mesozoic Yanshanian epoch （about 143.3 Ma）, causing rapid uplift and thrusting of the northern Dabashan thrust belt. During the propagation of this thrust, a series of backthrusts formed because of the obstruction from the frontier of Dabashan thrust belt, leading to the development of the pop-up structure.
