Probability Analysis of the Wave-Slamming Pressure Values of the Horizontal Deck with Elastic Support

This paper presents the probability distribution of the slamming pressure from an experimental study of regular wave slamming on an elastically supported horizontal deck. The time series of the slamming pressure during the wave impact were first obtained through statistical analyses on experimental data. The exceeding probability distribution of the maximum slamming pressure peak and distribution parameters were analyzed, and the results show that the exceeding probability distribution of the maximum slamming pressure peak accords with the three-parameter Weibull distribution. Furthermore, the range and relationships of the distribution parameters were studied. The sum of the location parameter D and the scale parameter L was approximately equal to 1.0, and the exceeding probability was more than 36.79% when the random peak was equal to the sample average during the wave impact. The variation of the distribution parameters and slamming pressure under different model conditions were comprehensively presented, and the parameter values of the Weibull distribution of wave-slamming pressure peaks were different due to different test models. The parameter values were found to decrease due to the increased stiffness of the elastic support. The damage criterion of the structure model caused by the wave impact was initially discussed, and the structure model was destroyed when the average slamming time was greater than a certain value during the duration of the wave impact. The conclusions of the experimental study were then described.

3D printing of osteocytic Dll4 integrated with PCL for cell fate determination towards osteoblasts in vitro

Since 3D printed hard materials could match the shape of bone,cell survival and fate determination towards osteoblasts in such materials have become a popular research *** this study,a scaffold of hardmaterial for 3D fabrication was designed to regulate developmental signal(Notch)transduction guiding osteoblast *** established a polycaprolactone(PCL)and cell-integrated 3D printing system(PCI3D)to reciprocally print the beams of PCL and cell-laden hydrogel for a *** PCI3D module holds good cell viability of over 87%,whereas cells show about sixfold proliferation in a 7-day *** osteocytic MLO-Y4 was engineered to overexpress Notch ligand Dll4,making up 25%after mixing with 75%stromal cells in the PCI3D *** Dll4,unlike other delta-like family members such as Dll1 or Dll3,promotes osteoblast differentiation and themineralization of primary mouse and a cell line of bone marrow stromal cells when cultured in a PCI3D module for up to 28 ***,osteocytic Dll4 could not promote osteogenic differentiation of the primary bone marrow stromal cells(BMSCs)after conditional deletion of the Notch transcription factor RBPjκby Cre *** data indicate that osteocytic Dll4 activates RBPjκ-dependent canonical Notch signaling in BMSCs for their oriented differentiation towards ***,osteocytic Dll4 holds a great potential for angiogenesis in human umbilical vein endothelial cells within *** study reveals that osteocytic Dll4 could be the osteogenic niche determining cell fate towards *** will open a new avenue to overcome the current limitation of poor cell viability and low bioactivity of traditional orthopedic implants.

Seasonal Responses of Net Primary Productivity of Vegetation to Phenological Dynamics in the Loess Plateau, China

With global warming, the great changes in the patterns of plant growth have occurred. The conditions in early spring and late autumn have changed the process of vegetation photosynthesis, which are expected to have a significant impact on net primary productivity(NPP) and affect the global carbon cycle. Currently, the seasonal response characteristics of NPP to phenological changes in dryland ecosystems are still not well defined. This article calibrated and analyzed the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI)time series of Advanced Very-High-Resolution Radiometer(AVHRR) data from 1982 to 2015 in the Loess Plateau, China. The spatial and temporal distributions of vegetation phenology and NPP in the Loess Plateau under semihumid and semiarid conditions were investigated. The seasonal variation in the NPP response to vegetation phenology under the climate change was also analyzed. The results showed that, different from the northern forest, there was distinct spatial heterogeneity in the effect of climate change on the dynamic change in vegetation growth in the Loess Plateau: 1) an advance of the start of the growing season(SOS) and a delay of the end of the growing season(EOS) significantly increased the NPP in spring and autumn, respectively, in the humid southeast;2) in the arid northwest, the NPP did not significantly increase in spring and autumn but significantly decreased in summer.

A vacuole localized β-glucosidase contributes to drought tolerance in Arabidopsis

The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) plays a critical role in plant growth, development, and adaptation to various stress conditions. The cellular ABA level is constantly adjusted to respond to changing physiological and environmental conditions. To date, the mechanisms for fine-tuning ABA levels remain elusive. Here, we report that BGLU10, a member of a multigene family of β-glucosidases, contributes to drought tolerance in Arabidopsis. The T-DNA insertion mutant bglu10 exhibited a droughtsensitive phenotype, characterized by an increased rate of water loss, and lower leaf temperature, β-glucosidase activity, ABA content, and expressions of ABA-and drought-responsive genes under drought stress. In contrast, lines overexpressing BGLU10 showed greater drought resistance than that of the wild-type, as shown by decreased water loss via transpiration, higher β-glucosidase activity, ABA level, and expressions of ABA- and stress-responsive genes under drought stress. Transient expression of BGLU10::GFP and γ-TIP1::RFP in mesophyll cell protoplasts showed that the BGLU10 enzyme protein was localized to the vacuole. Meanwhile, BGLU10 was expressed in various organs, and was induced by several abiotic stresses, suggesting that BGLU10 may be involved in a variety of stress responses, and that hydrolysis of ABA-GE produces free ABA in the plant stress response.

Land cover change and eco-environmental quality response of different geomorphic units on the Chinese Loess Plateau

Land cover in the Chinese Loess Plateau has undergone dramatic changes since the late *** the trend in land cover change and eco-environmental quality response of different geomorphic units in this stage is a realistic requirement for promoting sustainable development of the Chinese Loess *** on the data of geomorphic units and land cover in 1990,2000,2010 and 2018 of the Chinese Loess Plateau,we studied the trend of land cover change and eco-environmental quality response of different geomorphic units by using a significance index of land cover change,a proportion index of land cover change and an eco-environmental response *** results indicated that from 1990 to 2018,the areas of forestland and construction land substantially increased,whereas those of cropland,grassland,wetland and unused land considerably *** cover change exhibited large geomorphic differences,and the main conversion of land cover was from cropland into other land *** trend of land cover change in the loess tablelands and sandy loess hills declined,whereas the unstable trends in the other geomorphic units ***-environmental quality varied among different geomorphic *** expansion of construction land and degradation of forestland,grassland and wetland resulted in the deterioration of eco-environmental *** conversion of cropland and unused land into forestland and grassland,and the conversion of grassland into forestland were the main factors that drove the improvement of eco-environmental *** findings of this study may provide theoretical reference and support decision making for the optimization of land use structure and the improvement of eco-environmental quality on the Chinese Loess Plateau.

Sustainable dropwise condensation enabled ultraefficient heat pipes

Heat pipes play a critical role in determining the operations,safety,and energy efficiency of *** main focus to improve the heat pipe performance is on the evaporator design or wicking ***,the intrinsic limitation comes from the condenser,which is fundamentally constrained by inefficient filmwise condensation(FWC).In this study,we successfully achieved a peak effective thermal conductivity(keff)of~140 kW/(m·K)on widely used groove heat pipes by implementing sustianble dropwise condensation(DWC)and integrating with enhanced *** better understand the working mechanisms of the ultraefficient heat pipe,both the evaporator and condenser of the heat pipes have been modified *** results show that up to 296%enhancements on the keff can be achieved under various inclination angles by only inducing DWC in the condenser *** drawback of temperature fluctuations induced by DWC in smooth heat pipes appears to be effectively solved using the grooves‐wicking ***,by integrating the nanostructured evaporator,the keff of the heat pipe can be boosted up to 517%compared to conventional groove heat *** study,for the first time,demonstrates the huge potential of engineering both the condenser and evaporator simultaneously in developing ultraefficient heat pipes.

SnO/SnO_(2) heterojunction:an alternative candidate for sensing NO_(2) with fast response at room temperature

The SnO_(2)-based family is a traditional but important gas-sensitive ***,the requirement for high working temperature limits its practical *** work has been done to explore ways to improve its gas-sensing performance at room temperature(RT).For this report,SnO_(2),SnO,and SnO/SnO_(2) heterojunction was successfully synthesized by a facile hydrothermal combined with subsequent *** SnO_(2) requires a high operating temperature(145℃),while SnO/SnO_(2) heterojunction exhibits an excellent performance for sensing NO_(2) at ***,SnO/SnO_(2) exhibits a fast response,of 32 s,to 50 ppm NO_(2) at RT(27℃),which is much faster than that of SnO(139 s).The superior sensing properties of SnO/SnO_(2) heterojunction are attributed to the unique hierarchical structures,large number of adsorption sites,and enhanced electron *** results show that SnO/SnO_(2) heterojunction can be used as a promising high-performance NO_(2) sensitive material at RT.

First Discovery of North-South Striking Normal Faults near the Potential Eastern End of Altyn Tagh Fault

The Altyn Tagh fault is the northern boundary of Tibetan Plateau. As one of the most well-known strike-slip fault in the world, great achievements on tectonic deformation and Late Qua- ternary slip rate have been made. However, there is a long-lasting debate on whether the Altyn Tagh fault extends into the Jinta Basin or even eastward. In this paper, we use satellite image interpretation, field investigation, trench excavation, and optical stimulated luminescence dating to study newly found NS striking scarps in the eastern end of Jinta Nan Shan. The results are as follows： firstly, a group of normal faults develop on terrace T2 of Heihe River, the total length amounts to -40 km, total scarp height is 304-5 m; secondly, four paleoseismic events have been interpreted from three trenches, approximate ages of events are 79.97±19.14 ka BP, 62.55±13.10~55.41±10.77 ka BP, before 16.89±2.08 ka BP, 8.52±1.49 ka BP, respectively; thirdly, just like NS normal faults in the western end of Altyn Tagh fault, the newly found NS extensional faults are likely the terminating tectonics of the eastern end of Altyn Tagh fault, the large Altyn Tagh fault may end in the eastern end of Jinta Nan Shan.
