Mitochondrial-Oriented Injectable Hydrogel Microspheres Maintain Homeostasis of Chondrocyte Metabolism to Promote Subcellular Therapy in Osteoarthritis

Subcellular mitochondria serve as sensors for energy metabolism and redox balance, and the dynamic regulation of functional and dysfunctional mitochondria plays a crucial role in determining cells' fate. Selective removal of dysfunctional mitochondria at the subcellular level can provide chondrocytes with energy to prevent degeneration, thereby treating osteoarthritis. Herein, to achieve an ideal subcellular therapy, cartilage affinity peptide (WYRGRL)-decorated liposomes loaded with mitophagy activator (urolithin A) were integrated into hyaluronic acid methacrylate hydrogel microspheres through microfluidic technology, named HM@WY-Lip/UA, that could efficiently target chondrocytes and selectively remove subcellular dysfunctional mitochondria. As a result, this system demonstrated an advantage in mitochondria function restoration, reactive oxygen species scavenging, cell survival rescue, and chondrocyte homeostasis maintenance through increasing mitophagy. In a rat post-traumatic osteoarthritis model, the intra-articular injection of HM@WY-Lip/UA ameliorated cartilage matrix degradation, osteophyte formation, and subchondral bone sclerosis at 8 weeks. Overall, this study indicated that HM@WY-Lip/UA provided a protective effect on cartilage degeneration in an efficacious and clinically relevant manner, and a mitochondrial-oriented strategy has great potential in the subcellular therapy of osteoarthritis.

Microcrack localization using a collinear Lamb wave frequency-mixing technique in a thin plate

A novel Lamb wave frequency-mixing technique is proposed for locating microcracks in a thin plate,which does not require the resonance condition of Lamb wave mixing and can accurately locate the microcracks through only one-time *** on the bilinear stress-strain constitutive model,a two-dimensional finite element(FE)model is built to investigate the frequency-mixing response induced by the interaction between two primary Lamb waves and a *** two primary Lamb waves of A0 and S0 modes with different frequencies excited on the same side of the plate simultaneously impinge on the examined microcrack,under the modulation of the contact acoustic nonlinearity,the microcrack itself can be deemed as the secondary sound source and it will radiate the Lamb waves of new combined *** on the time of flight of the generated A0 mode at difference frequency,an indicator named normalized amplitude index(NAI)is defined to directly locate the multi-microcracks in the given *** is found that the number and location of the microcracks can be intuitively visualized by using the NAI based frequency-mixing *** is also demonstrated that the proposed frequency mixing technique is a promising approach for the microcrack localization.

A new sulfonylcalixarene-based coordination container 1 was designed and synthesized from the self-assembly reaction of p-tert-butylsulfonylcalix[4]arene (TBSC),Co(II) ion,and 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (NDC).It crystallizes in tetragonal system,space group I4/m with a=b=30.9119(19)A,c=43.565(3)A,V=41628(6)A^(3),D_(c)=0.731 g/cm^(3),M_(r)=9162.36,C_(384)H_(348)Co_(24)O_(126)S_(24),Z=2,F(000)=9384,μ=0.566 mm^(–1),the final GOOF=1.027,R=0.0987 and w R=0.2474 for 7240 observed reflections with I>2σ(I).Structural analyses indicate that 1 adopts an edge-directed octahedral geometry and consists of six TBSC-supported Co_(4) tetranuclear units locating on the vertices and twelve NDC bridging ligands occupying the *** new compound exhibits outstanding performance for the C_(2) hydrocarbons separation over CH_(4).

Improved Adaptive Random Convolutional Network Coding Algorithm

To address the issue of field size in random network coding, we propose an Improved Adaptive Random Convolutional Network Coding (IARCNC) algorithm to considerably reduce the amount of occupied memory. The operation of IARCNC is similar to that of Adaptive Random Convolutional Network Coding (ARCNC), with the coefficients of local encoding kernels chosen uniformly at random over a small finite field. The difference is that the length of the local encoding kernels at the nodes used by IARCNC is constrained by the depth; meanwhile, increases until all the related sink nodes can be decoded. This restriction can make the code length distribution more reasonable. Therefore, IARCNC retains the advantages of ARCNC, such as a small decoding delay and partial adaptation to an unknown topology without an early estimation of the field size. In addition, it has its own advantage, that is, a higher reduction in memory use. The simulation and the example show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Influence of sodium dodecyl sulfate coating on adsorption of methylene blue by biochar from aqueous solution

Biochar is regarded as a promising new class of materials due to its multifunctional character and the possibility of effectively coupling different properties. With increasing introduction into the environment, environmental chemicals such as surfactants will load onto the released biochar and change its physicochemical characteristics and adsorption behavior toward pollutants. In this study, sodium dodecyl sulfate（SDS）, as one type of anionic surfactant, was coated onto biochar with different loading amounts. The influence of SDS loading onto biochar＇s physicochemical properties were investigated by Fourier transform infrared（FT-IR） spectroscopy, elemental analysis, zeta potential and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller（BET） surface area and pore size distribution analysis. Results showed that the pore size of the biochar decreased gradually with the increase of SDS loading because of the surface-adsorption and pore-blocking processes; the p H of the point of zero charge（pHPZC） decreased with increasing SDS loading. Although surface-coating with SDS decreased the pore size of the biochar, its adsorption capacity toward Methylene Blue（MB） significantly increased. The biochar-bound SDS introduced functional groups and negative charges to the biochar surface, which could thus enhance the adsorption of MB via hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction. The results can shed light on the underlying mechanism of the influence of anionic surfactants on the adsorption of MB by biochar.

Gelatinized starch as a low-cost and bifunctional binder enables shuttle-free aqueous zinc-iodine batteries

Rechargeable aqueous zinc-iodine（Zn-I2） batteries are widely regarded as a promising contender for energy-storage devices,due to their intrinsic safety,low cost,and high ***,the severe shuttle effect of polyiodides and the large volume change of I2cathode induce severe capacity loss and poor electrochemical reversibility,hindering their commercial ***,we report that the low-cost gelatinized starch（Gstarch） can be used as a bifunctional binder for Zn-I2batteries to circumvent the above problems *** on both calculation and experimental data,it is demonstrated that the double-helix structure of G-starch with both α-1,4-and α-1,6-glycosidic bonds can strongly interact with polyiodides to suppress the shuttle ***,the G-starch with multiple hydrogen-bonded cross-linking networks exhibits a much-enhanced adhesion ability and can buffer the volume expansion of active *** contrast,the traditional carboxymethyl cellulose sodium-based aqueous binder lacks these *** a result,the G-starch binder enables the aqueous Zn-I2battery to achieve a high reversible capacity of212.4 mAh·g-1at 0.2 A·g-1after 1000 cycles and ultralong-cycling life over 48,000 cycles with 135.4 mAh·g-1and 89.6% capacity retention at 2 A·*** work develops a simple yet efficient strategy to construct highperformance Zn-I2batteries.

Theoretical modeling and experimental verifications of the single-compressor-driven three-stage Stirling-type pulse tube cryocooler

This paper establishes a theoretical model of the single-compressor-driven (SCD) three-stage Stirlingtype pulse tube cryocooler (SPTC) and conducts experimental verifications. The main differences between the SCD type and the multi-compressor-driven (MCD) crycooler are analyzed, such as the distribution of the input acoustic power in each stage and the optimization of the operating parameters, in which both advantages and difficulties of the former are stressed. The effects of the dynamic temperatures are considered to improve the accuracy of the simulation at very low temperatures, and a specific simulation example aiming at 10 K is given in which quantitative analyses are provided. A SCD threestage SPTC is developed based on the theoretical analyses and with a total input acoustic power of 371.58 W, which reaches a no-load temperature of 8.82 K and can simultaneously achieve the cooling capacities of 2.4 W at 70 K, 0.17 W at 25 K, and 0.05 W at 10 K. The performance of the SCD three-stage SPTC is slightly poorer than that of its MCD counterpart developed in the same laboratory, but the advantages of lightweight and compactness make the former more attractive to practical applications.

Reproducibility of RTVue retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and optic nerve head measurements in normal and glaucoma eyes

Background RTVue spectral-domain optical coherence tomography （OCT） is a new, ultra high-speed and high-resolution instrument, potentially to measure the presence of glaucoma or its progression accurately. The objective of this study was to evaluate its reproducibility of retinal nerve fiber layer （RNFL） thickness and optic nerve head （ONH） measurements in normal and glaucoma eyes. Methods This study was an observational clinical study. One eye was selected randomly from each of 89 normal individuals and 63 glaucoma patients in a range of severity. RNFL thickness and ONH were measured 3 times on the same day to determine intrasession variability. The same instrument was used by the same operator for all scans. Intrasession within-subject standard deviation （Sw）, precision （1.96xSw）, coefficient of variation （CVw, 100xSw/overall mean）, and intraclass coefficient （ICC） were calculated to evaluate reproducibility. Results RTVue OCT demonstrated double hump patterns in the RNFL profiles. High reproducibility was observed in all ONH parameters. For normal eyes, the value of ICC ranged between 0.98 and 1.00. For eyes with different extent of glaucoma, it ranged between 0.94 and 1.00. High reproducibility was also observed in RNFL thickness measurements. The values of ICC for averaged RNFL thickness ranged between 0,95 and 1.00 in all cases. For regional parameters, it ranged from 0,94 to 0.98 for normal eyes, 0.94 to 1.00 for mild glaucoma eyes, 0.87 to 1.00 for moderate glaucoma eyes, and 0.77 to 0.97 for severe glaucoma eyes. The nasal regions of severe glaucoma appeared to be most variable, as nasal lower region and inferior nasal region had the ICC values of 0.77 and 0.87. Conclusion Reproducibility of RTVue RNFL and ONH measurements was excellent in normal and glaucoma groups.
