Reactive oxygen species signaling and stomatal movement in plant responses to drought stress and pathogen attack

Stomata, the pores formed by a pair of guard cells, are the main gateways for water transpiration and photosynthetic CO2 exchange, as well as pathogen invasion in land plants. Guard cell movement is regulated by a combination of environmental factors, including water status, light, CO2 levels and pathogen attack, as well as endogenous signals, such as abscisic acid and apoplastic reactive oxygen species （ROS）. Under abiotic and biotic stress conditions, extracellular ROS are mainly produced by plasma membrane-localized NADPH oxidases, whereas intracellular ROS are produced in multiple organelles. These ROS form a sophisticated cellular signaling network, with the accumulation of apoplastic ROS an early hallmark of stomatal movement. Here, we review recent progress in understanding the molecular mechanisms of the ROS signaling network, primarily during drought stress and pathogen attack. We summarize the roles of apoplastic ROS in regulating stomatal movement, ABA and CO2 signaling, and immunity responses. Finally, we discuss ROS accumulation and communication between organelles and cells. This information provides a conceptual framework for understanding how ROS signaling is integrated with various signaling pathways during plant responses to abiotic and biotic stress stimuli.

Ages, Sources and Tectonic Settings of the Triassic Igneous Rocks in the Easternmost Segment of the East Kunlun Orogen, Central China

U–Pb analysis of zircons from igneous rocks in the Elashan Mountain, easternmost segment of the East Kunlun Orogen yielded 252–232 Ma. Geochemically, these rocks are mainly high in SiO_2, K_2O and K_2O＋Na_2O contents, low in P_2O_5 and TiO_2 contents, depleted in Ba, Sr, P, Ti and enriched in U, Hf, Zr, showing features of I–type granite. The zircon εHf（t） values of the Early Triassic Jiamuge＇er rhyolite porphyry（252±3 Ma） are positive（＋1.6 to ＋12.1）, suggesting a juvenile crustal source mixing with little old crustal component, and the zircon εHf（t） values of the Middle Triassic Manzhang＇gang granodiorite（244±3 Ma） and Dehailong diorite（237±3 Ma） are predominately negative（-8.4 to ＋1.0）, indicating an older crustal source. In comparison, the zircon εHf（t） values of the Late Triassic syenogranites from Suigen＇ergang（234±2Ma）, Ge＇ermugang（233±2 Ma） and Yue＇ergen（232±3 Ma） plutons vary from-3.8 to ＋5.0, suggesting a crust-mantle mixing source. From Early–Middle Triassic（252–237 Ma） to Late Triassic（234–232 Ma）, the geochemical characteristics of these rocks show the change from a subduction–collision setting to a post-collision or within-plate setting. By comparing of these new age data with 77 zircon U–Pb ages of igneous rocks of the eastern part of East Kunlun orogen from published literatures, we conclude that the igneous rocks of Elashan Mountain and these of the eastern part of East Kunlun Orogen belong to one magmatic belt. All these data indicate that the Triassic magmatic events of the eastern part of East Kunlun Orogen can be divided into three stages： 252–238 Ma, 238–226 Ma and 226–212 Ma. Statistically, the average εHf（t） values of the threestage igneous rocks show a tendency, from the old to young, from-0.75±0.25 to lower-2.65±0.52 and then to-1.22±0.25, respectively, which reveal the change of their sources. Therapeutic effect of nerve growth factor on cerebral infarction in dogs using the hemisphere anomalous volume ratio of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging

A model of focal cerebral ischemic infarction was established in dogs through middle cerebral artery occlusion of the right *** minutes after occlusion,models were injected with nerve growth factor adjacent to the infarct *** therapeutic effect of nerve growth factor against cerebral infarction was assessed using the hemisphere anomalous volume ratio,a quantitative index of diffusion-weighted *** 6 hours,24 hours,7 days and 3 months after modeling,the hemisphere anomalous volume ratio was significantly reduced after treatment with nerve growth factor. Hematoxylin-eosin staining,immunohistochemistry,electron microscopy and neurological function scores showed that infarct defects were slightly reduced and neurological function significantly improved after nerve growth factor *** result was consistent with diffusion-weighted MRI *** findings indicate that nerve growth factor can protect against cerebral infarction,and that the hemisphere anomalous volume ratio of diffusion-weighted MRI can be used to evaluate the therapeutic effect.

Carboniferous Highly Fractionated I-type Granites from the Kalamaili Fault Zone, Eastern Xinjiang, NW China: Petrogenesis and Tectonic Implications

Carboniferous magmatism is one of the most important tectonothermal events in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt(CAOB). However, the final closure time of the Kalamaili Ocean between East Junggar and Harlik Mountain is still debated. Early Carboniferous(332 Ma) and late Carboniferous(307-298 Ma) granitic magmatism from Kalamaili fault zone have been recognized by LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb dating. They are both metaluminous highly fractionated I-type and belong to the high-K calc-alkaline. The granitoids for early Carboniferous have zircon εHf(t) values of-5.1 to +8.5 with Hf model ages(TDM2) of 1.78-0.83 Ga, suggesting a mixed magma source of juvenile material with old continental crust. Furthermore, those for late Carboniferous have much younger heterogeneous zircon εHf(t) values(+5.1 to +13.6) with Hf model ages(TDM2=1.03-0.45 Ga) that are also indicative of juvenile components with a small involvement of old continental crust. Based on whole-rock geochemical and zircon isotopic features, these high-K granitoids were derived from melting of heterogeneous crustal sources or through mixing of old continental crust with juvenile components and minor AFC(assimilation and fractional crystallization). The juvenile components probably originated from underplated basaltic magmas in response to asthenospheric upwelling. These Carboniferous highly fractionated granites in the Kalamaili fault zone were probably emplaced in a post-collisional extensional setting and suggested vertical continental crustal growth in the southern CAOB, which is the same or like most granitoids in CAOB. This study provides new evidence for determining the post-accretionary evolution of the southern CAOB. In combination with data from other granitoids in these two terranes, the Early Carboniferous Heiguniangshan pluton represents the initial record of post-collisional environment, suggesting that the final collision between the East Junggar and Harlik Mountain might have occurred before 332 Ma.

Changes in photosynthesis and chlorophyll fluorescence in two soybean (Glycine max) varieties under NaCl stress

REBa_(2)Cu_(3)O_(7−x)(REBCO)coated conductors,owing to its high tensile strength and current‐carrying ability in a background field,are widely regarded a promising candidate in high‐field *** the great potentials,recent studies have highlighted the challenges posed by screening currents,which are featured by a highly nonuniform current distribution in the superconducting *** this paper,we report a comprehensive study on the behaviors of screening currents in a compact REBCO coil,specifically the screeningcurrent‐induced magnetic fields and *** were carried out in the self‐generated magnetic field and a background field,*** the self‐field condition,the full hysteresis of the magnetic field was obtained by applying current sweeps with repeatedly reversed polarity,as the nominal center field reached 9.17 T with a maximum peak current of 350 *** a background field of 23.15 T,the insert coil generated a center field of 4.17 T with an applied current of 170 ***,a total center field of 32.58 T was achieved before *** the sequential model and the coupled model considering the perpendicular field modification due to conductor deformation are *** comparative study shows that,for this coil,the electromagnetic–mechanical coupling plays a trivial role in self‐field conditions up to 9 *** contrast,with a high axial field dominated by the background field,the coupling effect has a stronger influence on the predicted current and strain *** discussions regarding the role of background field on the strains in the insert suggest potential design strategies to maximize the total center field.

Arsenic trioxide inhibits metastatic potential of mouse hepatoma H₂₂ cells in vitro and in vivo

BACKGROUND:It has been pointed out that only low-dose arsenic trioxide(ATO)presents therapeutic benefits outweighing the toxic side ***-dose ATO can effectively alleviate acute promyelocytic leukemia(APL). However,it is quite challenging in treating solid tumors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of ATO at low concentrations on the metastatic potential of mouse hepatoma H22 cells and the anti-metastatic mechanism of ATO. METHODS:The metastatic potential of H22 cells was evaluated by adhesion,migration and invasion assays after exposure to a low dose of ATO in *** mouse lung metastatic model induced by injection of H22 cells via the tail vein was adopted for the evaluation of metastatic potential. Different proteins in the lysate of H22 cells exposed to ATO at different concentrations were investigated by surface- enhanced laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry(SELDI-TOF-MS).Finally,Western blotting analyses were made to detect the expression pattern of MMP-2 and nm23-M1 proteins. RESULTS:Significant cell death started at ATO concentrations above 2μmol/*** growth and adhesion potential of H22 cells was inhibited in a time-and dose- dependent manner,and the migration and invasion potential of H22 cells was inhibited in a dose-dependent manner while ATO concentration was below 2μmol/L. Mice injected with ATO at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg had fewer lung ***,mice injected with ATO at a dose of 2 mg/kg or 4 mg/kg had a high mortality rate and more liver injuries.A total of 15 different protein peaks were identified between the lysate of H22 cells treated with ATO and *** proteins that peaked atm/z 5302 and 17207 coincided with MMP-2(fragment) and nm23-M1,*** blotting analyses demonstrated that MMP-2 and MMP-2 fragments were down-regulated and nm23-M1 was up-regulated in H22 cells treated with 2μmol/L ATO for 48 hours. Direct Visual Evidence for Neutral and Charged Hexaphyrin Aromaticity with and without Keto-Defect

We use density functional theory and time-dependent together with a set of extensive mul- tidimensional visualization techniques to characterize the influence of keto effect on charge distribution at ground state and electronic transitions for neutral and charged hexaphyrin aromaticity with and without keto-defect. It is found that the aromaticity is the key fac- tor to influence the ground state Mulliken charges distribution properties, other than the meso-aryl-substituted effect. But with the enhancement of the keto-defect, the distribution changes of Mulliken charges on the hexaphyrin groups are larger than those on the pentaflu- orophenyl substituted groups, following with the aromaticity changes from nonaromatic to aromatic. Furthermore, through characterizing by transition density and charge difference density, direct visual evidence for neutral and charged aromaticity with and without keto- defect can be clearly derived, and the ability of charge transfer between units of monoradical （nonaromaticity） and singlet biradical （aromaticity） forms is much stronger than that of neutral forms.

High-speed milling tests for 65vol%SiCp/6063A1 composites were performed by polycrystalline diamond(PCD) tools,response surface methodology was utilized in this study,and a cutting force model was developed through response surface methodology,which contained some important parameters such as cutting speed,cutting feed rate,cutting depth and cutting *** analysis of variance(ANOVA) indicated that the proposed mathematical model can adequately describe the relationship between cutting force and cutting process *** results show that cutting depth is the biggest important factor of milling force,and cutting feed rate is the second important factor,cutting speed is the third;milling force would not increase with the increasing of cutting width.
