In situ observation of the electrochemical behavior of Li–CO_(2)/O_(2)batteries in an environmental transmission electron microscope

Li–CO_(2)/O_(2)batteries,a promising energy storage technology,not only provide ultrahigh discharge capacity but also capture CO_(2)and turn it into renewable energy.Their electrochemical reaction pathways'ambiguity,however,creates a hurdle for their practical application.This study used copper selenide(CuSe)nanosheets as the air cathode medium in an environmental transmission electron microscope to in situ study Li–CO_(2)/O_(2)(mix CO_(2)as well as O_(2)at a volume ratio of 1:1)and Li–O_(2)batteries as well as Li–CO_(2)batteries.Primary discharge reactions take place successively in the Li–CO_(2)/O_(2)–CuSe nanobattery:(I)4Li^(+)+O_(2)+4e^(−)→2Li_(2)O;(II)Li_(2)O+CO_(2)→Li_(2)CO_(3).The charge reaction proceeded via(III)2Li_(2)CO_(3)→4Li^(+)+2CO_(2)+O_(2)+4e^(−).However,Li–O_(2)and Li–CO_(2)nanobatteries showed poor cycling stability,suggesting the difficulty in the direct decomposition of the discharge product.The fluctuations of the Li–CO_(2)/O_(2)battery's electrochemistry were also shown to depend heavily on O_(2).The CuSe‐based Li–CO_(2)/O_(2)battery showed exceptional electrochemical performance.The Li^–CO_(2)/O_(2)battery offered a discharge capacity apex of 15,492 mAh g^(−1) and stable cycling 60 times at 100 mA g^(−1).Our research offers crucial insight into the electrochemical behavior of Li–CO_(2)/O_(2),Li–O_(2),and Li–CO_(2)nanobatteries,which may help the creation of high‐performance Li–CO_(2)/O_(2)batteries for energy storage applications.

Theoretical investigations of population trapping phenomena in atomic four-color,three-step photoionization scheme

The four-color three-step selective photoionization process of atom is very important in laser isotope separation technology.The population trapping phenomena and their influences are studied theoretically in monochromatic and non-monochromatic laser fields based on the density matrix theory in this work.Time evolutions of the photoionization properties of the four-color,three-step process are given.The population trapping effects occur intensely in monochromatic excitation,while it gradually turns weak as the laser bandwidth increases.The effects of bandwidth,Rabi frequency,time delay,and frequency detuning on the population trapping effect are investigated in monochromatic and non-monochromatic laser fields.The effects of laser process parameters and atomic parameters on the effective selective photoionization are also discussed.The ionization probability and selectivity factors,as evaluation indexes,are difficult to improve synchronously by adjusting systematic parameters.Besides,the existence of metastable state may play a negative role when its population is low enough.

An artificial-neural-network-based surrogate modeling workflow for reactive transport modeling

Process-based reactive transport modeling(RTM)integrates thermodynamic and kinetically controlled fluid-rock interactions with fluid flow through porous media in the subsurface and surface environment.RTM is usually conducted through numerical programs based on the first principle of physical processes.However,the calculation for complex chemical reactions in most available programs is an iterative process,where each iteration is in general computationally intensive.A workflow of neural networkbased surrogate model as a proxy for process-based reactive transport simulation is established in this study.The workflow includes(1)base case RTM design,(2)development of training experiments,(3)surrogate model construction based on machine learning,(4)surrogate model validation,and(5)prediction with the calibrated model.The training experiments for surrogate modeling are generated and run prior to the predictions using RTM.The results show that the predictions from the surrogate model agree well with those from processes-based RTM but with a significantly reduced computational time.The well-trained surrogate model is especially useful when a large number of realizations are required,such as the sensitivity analysis or model calibration,which can significantly reduce the computational time compared to that required by RTM.The benefits are(1)it automatizes the experimental design during the sensitivity analysis to get sufficient numbers and coverage of the training cases;(2)it parallelizes the calculations of RTM training cases during the sensitivity analysis to reduce the simulation time;(3)it uses the neural network algorithm to rank the sensitivity of the parameters and to search the optimal solution for model calibration.

Simulating rise and fall cycles of Vietnam empires

The life cycle pattern of empires is pervasive worldwide,and this is caused by multiple factors.In the history of Vietnam,there are totally about ten empires or dynasties,which have aggregately lasted for more than one thousand years.Here,we apply the life cycle model and agent-based modeling to uncover the underlying mechanisms of the life cycle pattern for Vietnam empires.Macroscopically,the man-land relationship greatly shapes the life cycle pattern of traditional agricultural empires.The balancing process between land and population is critical for the empires.The relationship between incomes and costs has determined the actions or strategies of the social members or individuals.It suggests that our optimal solutions and simulations have perfectly matched the real history of Vietnam.Under three optimal solutions,the distributions of simulated and real empire durations in history can be well-matched,in terms of both discrete(histogram)and continuous forms(kernel density).It indicates that the history of human society is a dynamic process,which is determined by certain evolutionary rules and regulations.Therefore,we are able to back-calculate,simulate,and even predict the future of empires or countries.

History dynamics of unified empire in China(770 BC to 476 BC)

The laws and regulations in human history can be revealed by computational models.From 221 before Christ(BC)to 1912 Anno Domini(AD),the unification pattern has dominated the main part of Chinese history for 2132 years.Before the emergence of the first unified empire,the Qin Empire in 221 BC,there existed the Eastern Zhou dynasty(770 BC to 221 BC).This long dynasty has two stages,and here we focus on the first stage.This Spring-Autumn stage was from 770 BC(with 148 states)to 476 BC(with 32 states).The whole country(China)is modelled as a multi‐agent system,which contains multiple local states.They behave autonomously under certain action rules(wars and conflicts),which forms the main reason for the annexations and disappearance of most states.Key factors(power,loyalty,bellicosity and alliance)have been considered in our model settings,and simulation outcomes will be monitored and collected.Eventually,an optimal solution is obtained,which well unveils the internal mechanism and statistical features of real big history.Furthermore,counterfactuals are used to explore the non‐linear effects of the key factors,which deepens the authors’understanding of civilisa-tion evolutions in human history.

BACKGROUND Intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct(IPNB)is a premalignant biliarytype epithelial neoplasm with intraductal papillary or villous growth.Currently reported local palliative therapeutic modalities,including endoscopic nasobiliary drainage,stenting and biliary curettage,endoscopic biliary polypectomy,percutaneous biliary drainage,laser ablation,argon plasma coagulation,photodynamic therapy,and radiofrequency ablation to relieve mechanical obstruction are limited with weaknesses and disadvantages.We have applied percutaneous transhepatic cholangioscopy(PTCS)-assisted biliary polypectomy(PTCS-BP)technique for the management of IPNB including mucin-hypersecreting cast-like and polypoid type tumors since 2010.AIM To assess the technical feasibility,efficacy,and safety of PTCS-BP for local palliative treatment of IPNB.METHODS Patients with mucin-hypersecreting cast-like or polypoid type IPNB and receiving PTCS-BP between September 2010 and December 2019 were included.PTCS-BP was performed by using a half-moon type snare with a soft stainless-steel wire,and the tumor was snared and resected with electrocautery.The primary outcome was its feasibility,indicated by technical success.The secondary outcomes were efficacy,including therapeutic success,curative resection,and clinical success,and safety.RESULTS Five patients(four with mucin-hypersecreting cast-like type and one with polypoid type IPNB)were included.Low-and high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia(HGIN)and recurrent IPNB with invasive carcinoma were observed in one,two,and two patients,respectively.Repeated cholangitis and/or obstructive jaundice were presented in all four patients with mucin-hypersecreting cast-like type IPNB.All five patients achieved technical success of PTCS-BP.Four patients(three with mucin-hypersecreting cast-like type and one with polypoid type IPNB)obtained therapeutic success;one with mucin-hypersecreting cast-like type tumors in the intrahepatic small bile duct and HGIN had residual tumors.All four patients with mucin-

Coordinatively unsaturated cobalt single-atom nanozymes for visual pesticides detection by smartphone-based platform

By adjusting the coordination environment of single-atom catalysts,the enzyme-like activity can be finely tuned for highly sensitive biosensing.Herein,we demonstrated that coordinatively unsaturated cobalt-nitrogen sites doped within porous carbon(SA-CoN_(3))could serve as highly efficient oxidase mimic.Compared with the typical planar four-coordination structure(SA-CoN_(4)),the as-obtained single-atom Co nanozymes anchored by three nitrogen atoms are found to display much higher oxidase-like catalytic efficiency.Combined theoretical and experimental analysis revealed that the coordinatively unsaturated Co sites could facilitate adsorption and activation of O_(2) molecule and thus improve their oxidase-like activity.Based on the enhanced oxidase-like activity of SA-CoN_(3),a paper/smartphone sensor for organophosphorus pesticides(OPs)was successfully constructed and used to quantify glyphosate in environmental and food samples with a low detection limit of 0.66μM.This work not only highlights the important role of coordination unsaturation of SA nanozymes for promoting oxidase-like activity,but also provides an easy and cost-effective way to conduct effective quantification of OPs in the field.

Photothermal carbon dioxide(CO_(2))methanation has attracted increasing interest in solar fuel synthesis,which employs the advantages of photocatalytic H_(2)O splitting as a hydrogen source and photothermal catalytic CO_(2) reduction.This work prepared three-dimensional(3D)honeycomb N-doped carbon(NC)loaded with core–shell NiO@Ni nanoparticles generated in situ at 500℃(NiO@Ni/NC-500).Under the photothermal catalysis(200℃,1.5 W/cm^(2)),the CH_(4) evolution rate of NiO@Ni/NC-500 reached 5.5 mmol/(g·h),which is much higher than that of the photocatalysis(0.8 mmol/(g·h))and the thermal catalysis(3.7 mmol/(g·h)).It is found that the generated localized surface plasmon resonance enhances the injection of hot electrons from Ni to NiO,while thermal heating accelerates the thermal motion of radicals,thus generating a strong photo-thermal synergistic effect on the reaction.The CO_(2) reduction to CH_(4) follows the*OCH pathway.This work demonstrates the synergistic effect of NiO@Ni and NC can enhance the catalytic performance of photothermal CO_(2) reduction reaction coupled with water splitting reaction.

The lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)have been widely equipped in electric/hybrid electric vehicles(EVs/HEVs)and the portable electronics due to their excellent electrochemical performances.However,a large number of retired LIBs that consist of toxic substances(e.g.,heavy metals,electrolytes)and valuable metals(e.g.,Li,Co)will inevitably flow into the waste stream,and their incineration or landfill treatment will cause severe risks to ecosystem and human beings.The sustainable and efficient treatment or recycling of valuable resources from spent LIBs should be fully recognized for environmental and resource security.As one of the most important processes for spent LIBs recycling,the pretreatment is an indispensable step,which is directly related to the subsequent metal extraction and separation processes.Although considerable progresses have been made regarding the pretreatment technologies,there are few summarized reports concerning critical processes of spent LIBs recycling,especially combination of currently available recycling technologies with industrialized applications during pretreatments.Therefore,comprehensive review of the current prevailing pretreatment technologies in laboratory to existing scale-up applications is quite necessary to reveal cutting-edge development in the field of pretreatment.In this review,the current pretreatment technologies are systematically categorized and introduced,along with critical discussions.This review focused on the various options for pretreatment processes itself,instead of general spent LIBs recycling technologies without the focused topics that have been sophisticatedly reviewed by previous studies.Here,the deactivation,discharge,dismantling,separation,liberation of active material and electrolyte treatment have been summarized with the in-depth discussion of the technology development and current status of each category.Finally,current states of industrial development are also reviewed and discussed for the development of efficient and environmentally friendly recyclin
