Evaluation of water management on arsenic methylation and volatilization in arsenic-contaminated soils strengthened by bioaugmentation and biostimulation

Arsenic(As) fate in paddy fields has been one of the most significant current issues due to the strong As accumulation potential of rice plants under fooded conditions. However,no attempt was done to explore As methylation and volatilization under non-fooded conditions. Herein, we investigated the effects of water management on As methylation and volatilization in three arsenic-contaminated soils enhanced by biostimulation with strawderived organic matter and bioaugmentation with genetic engineered Pseudomonas putida KT2440(GE P. putida). Under fooded conditions, the application of biochar(BC), rice straw(RS)and their combination(BC+RS) increased total As in porewater. However, these effects were greatly attenuated under non-fooded conditions. Compared with RS amendment alone, the combination of GE P. putida and RS further promoted the As methylation and volatilization,and the promotion percentage under non-fooded conditions were significantly higher than that under fooded conditions. The combined GE P. putida and RS showed the highest efficiency in As methylation(88 μg/L) and volatilization(415.4 μg/(kg·year)) in the non-fooded soil with moderate As contamination. Finally, stepwise multiple linear regression analysis presented that methylated As, DOC and p H in porewater were the most important factors contributing to As volatilization. Overall, our findings suggest that combination of bioaugmentation with GE P. putida and biostimulation with RS/BC+RS is a potential strategy for bioremediation of arsenic-contaminated soils by enhancing As methylation and volatilization under non-fooded conditions.

Study of poly-disperse aerosols deposition in turbulent flow with different Reynolds numbers

The turbulent deposition mechanism is one of the main mechanisms of aerosol deposition in nuclear power plant tubes.An experimental study of poly-disperse aerosol deposition in a horizontal tube is conducted,where the nominal Reynolds number(Re)is in a range of 3600–200,000.The aerosol deposition velocity first increases and then decreases with the increase of Res,and at high Re,particle rebound occurs during aerosol deposition in the tube.When the Re is low,the aerosol deposition velocity increases with the increase of aerosol diameter.When the Re is greater than 60,000,the deposition velocity first increases and then decreases with the increase of aerosol diameter due to particle surface rebound.A new aerosol deposition model has been developed by establishing the energy conservation equation of the rebounded particles in the viscous sublayer.The calculated results of the new model are in good agreement with these experimental results,and the error between the aerosol deposition velocity calculated by the model and experimental results is between−60%and 150%.

Geometric phase-encoded stimuli-responsive cholesteric liquid crystals for visualizing real-time remote monitoring:humidity sensing as a proof of concept

Liquid crystals are a vital component of modern photonics,and recent studies have demonstrated the exceptional sensing properties of stimuli-responsive cholesteric liquid crystals.However,existing cholesteric liquid crystal-based sensors often rely on the naked eye perceptibility of structural color or the measurement of wavelength changes by spectrometric tools,which limits their practical applications.Therefore,developing a platform that produces recognizable sensing signals is critical.In this study,we present a visual sensing platform based on geometric phase encoding of stimuli-responsive cholesteric liquid crystal polymers that generates real-time visual patterns,rather than frequency changes.To demonstrate this platform’s effectiveness,we used a humidity-responsive cholesteric liquid crystal polymer film encoded with a q-plate pattern,which revealed that humidity causes a shape change in the vortex beam reflected from the encoded cholesteric liquid crystal polymers.Moreover,we developed a prototype platform towards remote humidity monitoring benefiting from the high directionality and long-range transmission properties of laser beams carrying orbital angular momentum.Our approach provides a novel sensing platform for cholesteric liquid crystals-based sensors that offers promising practical applications.The ability to generate recognizable sensing signals through visual patterns offers a new level of practicality in the sensing field with stimuli-responsive cholesteric liquid crystals.This platform might have significant implications for a broad readership and will be of interest to researchers working in the field of photonics and sensing technology.

The investigation concentrates on friction stir welded(FSW)Al-Cu-Li alloy concerning its local microstructural evolution and mechanical properties.The grain features were characterized by electron back scattered diffraction(EBSD)technology,while precipitate characterization was conducted by using transmission electron microscopy(TEM)aligned along[011]Al and[001]Al zone axes.The mechanical properties are evaluated through micro-hardness and tensile testing.It can be found that nugget zones exhibit finely equiaxed grains evolved through complete dynamic recrystallization(DRX),primarily occurring in continuous dynamic recrystallization(CDRX)and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization(DDRX).In the thermal-mechanically affected zone(TMAZ),numerous sub-structured grains,exhibiting an elongated morphology,were created due to partial DRX,signifying the dominance of CDRX,DDRX,and geometric dynamic recrystallization(GDRX)in this region.T_(1)completely dissolves in the nugget zone(NZ)leading to the formation of Guinier-Preston zones and increase ofδ′,β′and S′.Conversely,T_(1)partially solubilizes in TMAZ,the lowest hardness zone(LHZ)and heat affected zone(HAZ),and the residual T_(1)undergoes marked coarsening,revealing various T_(1)variants.The solubilization and coarsening of T_(1)are primary contributors to the degradation of hardness and strength.θ′primarily dissolves and coarsens in NZ and TMAZ,whilst this precipitate largely coarsens in HAZ and LHZ.σ,TB,grain boundary phases(GBPs)and precipitate-free zone(PFZ)are newly generated during FSW.σexists in the TMAZ,LHZ and HAZ,whereas TB nucleates in NZ.GBPs and PFZ mostly develop in LHZ and HAZ,which can cause strain localization during tensile deformation,potentially leading to LHZ joint fracture.

Gigantic occipital epidermal cyst in a 56-year-old female:A case report

BACKGROUND Gigantic epidermal cysts(GECs)are rare benign skin appendicular tumours also known as keratinocysts.GECs have a high incidence and their wall is made up of epidermis.Epidermal cysts can occur in any part of the skin;clinical manifestations include skin colour hemispherical swelling;cystic;mobile;0.5 cm to several centimetres in diameter;and slow growth.CASE SUMMARY Herein,we report a case involving a 56-year-old female with a GEC in the occipitalia.On July 25,2023,a patient with a GEC was admitted to the neurosurgery Department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Medical University.The phyma was shown to be a solid mass during the operation and was confirmed to be a GEC based on pathological examination.CONCLUSION Epidermal cysts are common cystic nodules on the surface of the body,the aetiology is unclear,the clinical manifestations can vary,and the misdiagnosis rate is high.However,giant epidermal cysts are rare.In most cases,however,the prognosis is satisfactory.This paper analyses and summarizes the population,location,clinical and pathological characteristics and pathogenesis of the disease to strengthen the understanding of this disease and improve the accuracy of clinical diagnosis.

Cross-Dimension Attentive Feature Fusion Network for Unsupervised Time-Series Anomaly Detection

Time series anomaly detection is crucial in various industrial applications to identify unusual behaviors within the time series data.Due to the challenges associated with annotating anomaly events,time series reconstruction has become a prevalent approach for unsupervised anomaly detection.However,effectively learning representations and achieving accurate detection results remain challenging due to the intricate temporal patterns and dependencies in real-world time series.In this paper,we propose a cross-dimension attentive feature fusion network for time series anomaly detection,referred to as CAFFN.Specifically,a series and feature mixing block is introduced to learn representations in 1D space.Additionally,a fast Fourier transform is employed to convert the time series into 2D space,providing the capability for 2D feature extraction.Finally,a cross-dimension attentive feature fusion mechanism is designed that adaptively integrates features across different dimensions for anomaly detection.Experimental results on real-world time series datasets demonstrate that CAFFN performs better than other competing methods in time series anomaly detection.

Strategies for constructing seven-membered rings: Applications in natural product synthesis

The seven-membered ring motifs are found in bioactive pharmaceuticals and a wide range of natural products, including alkaloids and terpenoids, which hold significant importance in synthetic chemistry and has garnered considerable attention from both academia and industry. Despite the challenges faced in the past decade, the total synthesis of natural products incorporating the non-aromatic cycloheptane skeletons remains a compelling pursuit. Recently, numerous elegant strategies for constructing the sevenmembered ring system have been successfully developed. This review focuses on the recent advancements in this field from 2017 to April 2023, highlighting key transformations utilized to construct the non-aromatic cycloheptane core structures and serves as a valuable guide for synthetic chemists engaged in the total synthesis of natural products containing seven-membered ring motifs.

Single-incision laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal repair in the treatment of adult female patients with inguinal hernia

BACKGROUND Women have a 3%lifetime chance of developing an inguinal hernia,which is not as common in men.Due to its cosmetic benefits,single-incision laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal(SIL-TAPP)inguinal hernia repair is becoming in-creasingly popular in the management of inguinal hernia in women.However,there are no studies comparing the safety and applicability of SIL-TAPP repair with conventional laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal(CL-TAPP)inguinal hernia repair for the treatment of inguinal hernia in women.AIM To compare the outcomes of SIL-TAPP and CL-TAPP repair in adult female patients with inguinal hernia and to estimate the safety and applicability of SIL-TAPP repair in adult female inguinal hernia patients.METHODS We retrospectively compared the clinical information and follow-up data of fe-male inguinal hernia patients who underwent SIL-TAPP inguinal hernia repair and those who underwent CL-TAPP inguinal hernia repair at the Affiliated Hos-pital of Nantong University from February 2018 to December 2020 and assessed the long-term and short-term outcomes of both cohorts.RESULTS This study included 123 patients,with 71 undergoing SIL-TAPP repair and 52 un-dergoing CL-TAPP repair.The two cohorts of patients and inguinal hernia charac-teristics were similar,with no statistically meaningful difference.The rate of intraoperative inferior epigastric vessel injury was lower in patients in the SIL-TAPP cohort(0,0%)than in patients in the CL-TAPP cohort(4,7.7%)and was significantly different(P<0.05).In addition,the median[interquartile range(IQR)]total hospitalization costs were significantly lower in patients in the SIL-TAPP cohort[$3287(3218-3325)]than in patients in the CL-TAPP cohort[$3511(3491-3599)].Postoperatively,the occurrence rate of trocar site hernia was lower in the SIL-TAPP cohort(0,0%)than in the CL-TAPP cohort(4,7.7%),and the median(IQR)cosmetic score was significantly higher in the SIL-TAPP cohort[10(10-10)]than in the CL-TAPP cohort[9(9-10)].CONCLUSION SIL-TAPP repair did not increas

Kenaf is considered to have great potential for remediation of heavy metals in ecosystems.However,studies on molecular mechanisms of root Cd accumulation and tolerance are still inadequate.In this study,two differently tolerant kenaf cultivars were selected as materials and the physiological and transcriptomic effects were evaluated under Cd stress.This study showed that 200μmol/L CdCl_(2) treatment triggered the reactive oxygen species(ROS)explosion and membrane lipid peroxidation.Compared with the Cd-sensitive cultivar‘Z',the Cd-tolerant cultivar‘F'was able to resist oxidative stress in cells by producing higher antioxidant enzyme activities and increasing the contents of ascorbic acid(AsA)and glutathione(GSH).The root cell wall of‘F'exhibited higher polysaccharide contents under Cd treatment,providing more Cd-binding sites.There were 3,439 differentially expressed genes(DEGs)that were co-regulated by Cd treatment in two cultivars.Phenylpropanoid biosynthesis and plant hormone signal transduction pathways were significantly enriched by functional annotation analysis.DEGs associated with pectin,cellulose,and hemi-cellulose metabolism were involved in Cd chelation of root cell wall;V-ATPases,ABCC3 and Narmp3 could participated in vacuolar compartmentalization of Cd;PDR1 was responsible for Cd effux;the organic acid transporters contributed to the absorption of Cd in soil.These genes might have played key roles in kenaf Cd tolerance and Cd accumulation.Moreover,HcZIP2 was identified to be involved in Cd uptake and transport in kenaf.Our findings provide a deeper understanding of the molecular pathways underlying Cd accumulation and detoxification mechanisms in kenaf.

Renewable conversion of coal gangue to 13-X molecular sieve for Cd^(2+)-containing wastewater adsorption performance

Using coal gangue(CG)as raw material,a new type of all solid-waste-based 13-X molecular sieve material was controllably prepared by alkali fusion-hydrothermal method.The synthetic molecular sieve was used as a solid adsorbent to treat Cd^(2+)-containing wastewater,and its adsorption behavior on Cd^(2+)in aqueous solution was studied and analyzed.The microstructure and morphology of the molecular sieve were investigated by X-ray diffraction(XRD),field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM)and specific surface area analyzer.The results show that the synthesized 13-X molecular sieve has higher Brunauer–Emmett–Teller(BET)specific surface area with higher crystallinity and higher adsorption capacity for the heavy metal Cd^(2+).The adsorption process of Cd^(2+)by molecular sieve conforms to the Langmuir isotherm adsorption equation and Lagergren pseudo-second-order rate equation.Combined with thermodynamic calculation,it can be concluded that the adsorption process is physically monolayer,spontaneous and exothermic.In this study,a low-cost and naturally available synthesis method of 13-X molecular sieve is reported.Combined with its adsorption mechanism for Cd^(2+),it provides a feasible and general method for removing heavy metal ions from coal gangue and also provides a new way for the utilization of coal gangue with high added value.
