Recovery of Unsold Food from Three Agri-Food Industries (SOCOCe, COQUIVOIRe and SCB) for the Feeding of the Abidjan Zoo Animals

The waste of foodstuffs is increasing in the agri-food industries. This is reflected in the increasing volume of their waste. Food is thrown away on criteria that have nosthing to do with its nutritional quality. In most cases, the criteria are shape, color and stains. In order to reduce this waste, a way of valorization was investigated. This paper focuses on waste reduction through feeding the Abidjan zoo animals with the unsold products of three agro-industries. The unsold products collected by the zoo were characterized over an 8-year period (2011 to 2019). Deaths and births were recorded. The food needs met by the unsold products harvested were evaluated and the economic gains estimated. The results showed that the food recovered by the Abidjan Zoo at SOCOCe contained 34.94% fruit, 38.58% vegetable and 23.47% meat products. At SCB and Coquivoire the donations are estimated at 2 tons of bananas and 1.5 tons of chickens (smoked and cold chicken) respectively. These donations allowed the Zoo to save 25.94% of its budget allocated to animal feed. The diversity of the food collected has a positive impact on the quality of life of the animals at the Zoo. This is reflected in an increase in the number of births from 0 to 12 per year and a decrease in mortality of 90%.

Numerical Modelling of Coupled Heat and Mass Transfer in Porous Materials: Application to Cinder Block Bricks

In this work, we present numerical modelling of coupled heat and mass transfer within porous materials. Our study focuses on cinder block bricks generally used in building construction. The material is assumed to be placed in air. Moisture content and temperature have been chosen as the main transfer drivers and the equations governing these transfer drivers are based on the Luikov model. These equations are solved by an implicit finite difference scheme. A Fortran code associated with the Thomas algorithm was used to solve the equations. The results show that heat and mass transfer depend on the temperature of the air in contact with the material. As this air temperature rises, the temperature within the material increases, and more rapidly at the material surface. Also, thermal conductivity plays a very important role in the thermal conduction of building materials and influences heat and mass transfer in these materials. Materials with higher thermal conductivity diffuse more heat.

Potential for Green Hydrogen Production from Biomass, Solar and Wind in Togo

Potential of green hydrogen producing from biomass, solar and wind in Togo has been performed. The availability of these three resources has been depicted with maps showing them per cantons in Togo, thus, by using the datasets from eSA Biomass Climate Change Initiative, the global solar atlas and the global wind atlas. The conversions rates used were: for solar resource, 3% of land was allocated for the analysis after removing the exclusions with a conversion rate of 52.5 kWh/kg of hydrogen;for biomass hydrogen, the conversion rate of 13.4 kg BS/kg H2 was assumed. Wind resources at 50 m above ground were not sufficient to evaluate the potential as it is lower than class 3 winds. QGIS version 3.6.4 and R version 4.0.4 were used. Results showed that biomass is the leading resource for producing green hydrogen from renewable energy resources;with good impact in these two cantons: Bassar, Gobe/ eketo/Gbadi N’Kugna. However, this resource is still decreasing and in some cantons it is null.

Determinants of Agroecological Practices Adoption in the Sudano-Sahelian Zone

Under the combined effect of both climatic and anthropogenic factors, agroecosystems and especially arable soils undergo a worrying and fast degradation in the Sudano-Sahelian zone of Western Africa threatening its socio-economic development. Food systems need to be better managed to be more resilient, to increase agricultural production, while conserving natural resources and biodiversity. Agroecological practices alternatively with traditional cultural techniques have been locally experimented to cope with local pedoclimatic constraints such as weak (low) soil fertility and climate change, increasing food demand and economic conditions. Our work aims at by taking stock of agroecological knowledge as well as the determinants of their adoption with small-scale farmers in eastern Burkina Faso. A survey (48 farmers) was conducted in Sampieri (Kantchari district), and Logit model was used to determine equations for agroecological practices adoption. Results show that traditional production practices for millet-bean cultural systems are gradually being replaced by those of agroecological. In fact, 60.4% of producers have participated in at least one agroecological training session and 60.8% of producers are interested at least in one agroecological topic. The most adopted and practiced techniques were superficial plowing, stone-rows, zai and compost, single or in combination (60% of the producers). Determinants of these practices adoption were the increased crop yields, improved of producers’ incomes, the provision or otherwise of material and human resources and training. Additionally, variables such as training, possession of agricultural equipment were positively correlated to the adoption of agroecological practices while illiteracy impacts negatively and significantly this adoption. Design of an Intelligent System for Automatic Detection and Location of Potholes in Mali

Potholes are practically present on all roads in Mali. Malian drivers seek to locate potholes on the road when driving. And during night trips in Mali, it is very difficult to locate potholes on the road, which most often leads to fatal accidents. The objective of this article is to design an intelligent system for detecting and locating potholes and speed bumps in Mali. For pothole detection, an ultrasonic sensor was used with an Arduino microcontroller. GPS was used to locate the location of potholes and GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) was used to transmit the location data of potholes. Detecting potholes helps reduce the number of traffic accidents in Mali and their locations will allow local and government structures to quickly repair the road. This project has enabled an improvement in human comfort in the existing system, so that the driver can be fully attentive and reassured when driving in Mali.

Performance evaluation of Asphalt Concrete Based on Basalt Aggregates of Diack and Quartzite of Bakel

In Senegal, basalt aggregates are the aggregates used for the production of asphalt. They are also in some condition in base layer. However, the only licensed and operated basalt quarry in the west-central part of the country is finished and has reached very important depths thus constituting an environmental threat. This is how quartzite present in the east of the country precisely in the department of Bakel would constitute an alternative to basalt. For this purpose, the performance of two bituminous concretes based on quartzite and basalt was compared. One is made from Diack basalt aggregates, considered as the reference aggregate for asphalt in Senegal and the other is based on Bakel quartzite aggregates, they are both class 0/14. The mechanical performance of two bituminous concretes is evaluated using the Marshall method. The results obtained from the marshall tests give compactness values between 94% and 97% representing the limits laid down in the technical specifications, the creep values for quartzite-based asphalt concrete, while respecting the limit values, are higher than those obtained with basalt aggregates. Thus showing that the former is less resistant to deformation than the former. For both bituminous mixtures, the stability values remain above the minimum value of 1000 kgf set by the specifications. The water resistance test carried out on the two bituminous concretes based on basalt aggregate and quartzite aggregate gives values of immersion/compression ratio (R’c/Rc) equal to 0.72 and 0.82 respectively. These values are above the minimum required value (0.70) in the technical specifications in Senegal.

Kinetic and Thermodynamic Study of the Dephosphation of Wastewater by Clay Materials from Côte d’Ivoire

Phosphorus is introduced into the aquatic environment from different point sources, mainly by domestic and industrial wastewater;contributing to the eutrophication of water bodies. The most common way for wastewater dephosphation is the injection of expensive chemicals into these bodies of water. Thus, the main objective of this work was to find an alternative to chemicals by using clay materials from Côte d’Ivoire to adsorb phosphate ions from aqueous solutions. The clay samples, taken from various regions were characterized by X-ray diffraction. They have a different mineralogical composition. The influence of various parameters such as the pH of the medium, contact time, the ion force, temperature, etc. on the adsorption was studied. Adsorption is influenced by the temperature, the pH of the medium, valence of the saturated cation and the clay composition. It is described by a kinetic model of the pseudo-second order. The salt of the medium has no significant effect on the process. The thermodynamic study revealed that adsorption is spontaneous, endothermic and that it is done by electrostatic means of physical nature.

Right Testicle ectopy Associated with Left Renal Agenesis

Testicular ectopia is a rare genital malformation belonging to the spectrum of testicular migration abnormalities. Renal agenesis can be unilateral or bilateral, isolated or associated with other malformations (1/4 of renal agenesis is accompanied by genital malformations, and more often affects the left kidney. Few cases are reported in the literature. We report a case in a 28-year-old patient with ectopia of the right testicle in the suprapubic position associated with agenesis of the left kidney, and surgical management consisted of an orchiectomy, with good surgical results.

Salt Tolerance of 15 Rice （Oryza sativa L.） Varieties in the Office du Niger Zone of Mali

From 2003 to 2005, in pot and field experiments, rice response to salinity stress of 15 rice varieties was studied at germination and young seedling stages using salt affected soils collected from rice production areas in the Office du Niger zone of Mali. The rice varieties were composed of 10 rice genotypes from the breeding program of Mali and five from West African Rice Development Association （WARDA） program （Saint Louis, Senegal）. Soil samples were collected from the visually affected soils which were characterized by the appearance of white or black efflorescence on the soil surface. In pot experiments, the genotypes were allowed to germinate in both affected soil types （white efflorescence and black efflorescence） and salt effects on plant seedling growth were observed. Results showed that all varieties were significantly sensitive to salinity stress based on germination, young seedling shoot and root dry weights. Among the rice varieties, the most salt tolerant variety was BG90-2 （a high yielding genotype from the Institut d＇economie Rurale （IeR） breeding program） while the most sensitive variety was Telimani （also from the breeding program of IeR）. All other varieties were intermediary between these two genotypes. A three year field experiment conducted in a highly affected area near Niono confirmed the results of the pot experiment. The relatively salt tolerant genotypes were found in both Malian （BG90-2, Kogoni91-1, SK51-5-2） and WARDA （Was30-11-1-1-4-6-1B） rice breeding programs.
