Aggregation-induced Emission Probe for Fluorescence/Photoacoustic Dual-modality Imaging and Photodynamic/Photothermal Treatment

The combination of near-infrared(NIR)fluorescence imaging(FLI)and photoacoustic imaging(PAI)can effectively compensate for each other’s inherent limitations,which can provide reliable and rich information on tumor biology.Therefore,the development of FL/PA dual-modality imaging probes is beneficial for achieving precision cancer diagnosis and treatment.Herein,we designed an efficient phototherapy agent methoxy bithiophene indene(OTIC),which was based on aggregation-induced emission(AIE)active fluorophores.To improve the water dispersion and enrichment of OTIC at the tumor site,OTIC nanoparticles(OTIC NPs)were prepared by a nanoprecipitation method.The balance between radiation and non-radiation energy dissipation was regulated by the strong donor-acceptor interaction and intramolecular motion.So OTIC NPs exhibited bright NIR fluorescence,photoacoustic signals,efficient generation of reactive oxygen species,and high photothermal conversion efficiency under NIR irradiation.Accurate imaging of the tumor and mice sentinel lymph nodes(SLNs)with OTIC NPs was visualized by NIR FL/PA dual-modal imaging.With the comprehensive imaging information provided by OTIC NPs in vivo,tumors were ablated under laser irradiation,which greatly improved the therapeutic efficacy.OTIC NPs would be possible to realize the precise guidance of FL/PA imaging for tumor treatment in the future clinical application.

Impact of body mass index,weight gain,and metabolic disorders on survival and prognosis in patients with breast cancer who underwent chemotherapy

Background: Weight gain during chemotherapy in patients with breast cancer contributes to their poor prognosis. However, a growing number of studies have found that metabolic disorders seem to play a more important role in breast cancer prognosis than weight gain. This study aimed to explore the prognostic effects of body mass index (BMI), weight gain, and metabolic disorders on the overall survival (OS) and prognosis of patients with breast cancer who underwent chemotherapy.Methods: Data from the inpatient medical records of patients with breast cancer who underwent chemotherapy at the Beijing Cancer Hospital Breast Cancer Center from January to December 2010 were retrospectively collected, and the patients were followed up until August 2020.Results: A total of 438 patients with stages I to III breast cancer met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Forty-nine (11.19%) patients died, while 82 (18.72%) patients had tumor recurrence and metastasis at the last follow-up (August 2020). From the time of diagnosis until after chemotherapy, no significant differences were observed in the body weight (t=4.694,P<0.001), BMI categories (χ^(2)=19.215,P=0.001), and incidence of metabolic disorders (χ^(2)=24.841,P<0.001);the BMI categories and weight change had no effect on the OS. Both univariate (χ^(2)=6.771,P=0.009) and multivariate survival analyses (hazard ratio=2.775, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.326-5.807,P=0.007) showed that low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels at diagnosis had a negative impact on the OS. The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the HDL-C level at diagnosis (odds ratio [OR]=2.200, 95% CI: 0.996-4.859,P=0.051) and metabolic disorders after chemotherapy (OR=1.514, 95% CI: 1.047-2.189,P=0.028) are risk factors for poor prognosis in patients with breast cancer.Conclusions: Chemotherapy led to weight gain and aggravated the metabolic disorders in patients with breast cancer. The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation(APEC)is contemplating expanding its list of environmental goods(EG)for trade liberalization to fight climate change.In support of doing so,this study proposes that a long list that retains controversies is better for carbon emission reduction than a short common list.This study examines four mechanisms of longer lists:enlarging market scales,enriching product mixes,enhancing product sophistication,and enriching trade patterns.Using China’s emerging EG trade during the 2001-2015 period as a case study,this study compares four EG lists with different EG.The results show that:(1)a longer list reduces carbon emissions from both imports and exports,making domestic regions with different advantages have better chances of improving carbon efficiencies.(2)Product sophistication reduces the emission gap between trading partners,regardless of the length of EG lists.(3)China’s EG exports contribute to carbon reduction in leading regions,while EG imports provide laggard regions with better chances of reducing carbon emissions.These findings provide three implications for future list-making:it is important to(1)seek a long and inclusive list rather than a short common list,(2)shift the focus from environmental end-use to the technological contents of products,and(3)balance the demand of laggard regions to import and the capacity of leading regions to export.

A chronic liver disease usually results in iron accumulation, and an excess of iron will further aggravate liver injury, forming a vicious circle. Likewise, it also plays a significant role in other organs when it comes to iron metabolism. A long time passes between the time it takes to break through to MRIbased iron diagnosis and its ability to distinguish the types of iron accumulation accurately and quickly.This work highlighted a new type of iron accumulation treatment solution integrated with diagnosis and treatment. A chelating method for ICG and Leci that can assist PAI and MRI to achieve better diagnostic and therapeutic effects. This work revealed biomaterial engineering techniques are being adapted to address clinical medical problems through cutting-edge research.

The tree ring has been regarded as an emerging archive to reconstruct historical atmospheric mercury(Hg)trends,but with the large knowledge gaps in the reliability.In this study,we comprehensively evaluated the Hg source,radial translocation and age effect of Masson pine(Pinus massoniana)tree ring at Mt.Jinyun in Chongqing,to assess the suitability of such tree ring as the archive of atmospheric Hg.Results showed that distinct variabilities among Masson pine tree-ring Hg concentration profiles.The Hg concentration significantly increased along with stem height(P<0.05),indicating the Hg in tree rings mainly derived from foliage uptake atmospheric Hg.We found a distinct age effect that the tree ring of young trees had the higher Hg concentration.Besides,we used the advection-diffusion model to demonstrate how Hg concentration shifted by the advection or/and diffusion in tree rings.The modeling results showed that the advection induced radial translocation during the young growth period of tree was a plausible mechanism to result in the tree-ring Hg record largely different from the trend of anthropogenic Hg emissions in Chongqing.We finally suggest that in further Hg dendrochemistry,better discarding the tree-ring Hg profile of the young growth period to reduce impacts of the radial translocation and age effect.

Anammox is widely considered as the most cost-effective and sustainable process for nitrogen removal.However,how to achieve the enrichment of anammox biomass remains a challenge for its large-scale application,especially in mainstream wastewater treatment.In this study,the feasibility of enrichment of anammox biomass was explored through the realization of partial denitrification and the addition of bio-carriers.By using ordinary activated sludge,a sequencing batch reactor(SBR)followed by an up-fow anaerobic sludge bed(UASB)was operated at 25±2℃ for 214 days.The long-term operation was divided into five phases,in which SBR and UASB were started-up in Phases I and II,respectively.By eliminating oxygen and adjusting the infow ratios in Phases III-V,advanced nitrogen removal was achieved with the effuent total nitrogen being 4.7 mg/L and the nitrogen removal efficiency being 90.5%in Phase V.Both in-situ and ex-situ activity tests demonstrated the occurrence of partial denitrification and anammox.Moreover,16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that Candidatus Brocadia was enriched from below the detection limit to in biofilms(0.4%in SBR,2.2%in UASB)and the foc sludge(0.2%in SBR,1.3%in UASB),while Thauera was mainly detected in the foc sludge(8.1%in SBR,8.8%in UASB),which might play a key role in partial denitrification.Overall,this study provides a novel strategy to enrich anammox biomass driven by rapid achievement of partial denitrification through the addition of bio-carriers,which will improve large-scale application of anammox processes in mainstream wastewater treatment.

Performance and mechanism of La-Fe metal-organic framework as a highly efficient adsorbent for fluoride removal from mine water

Water fluoride pollution has caused non-negligible harm to the environment and humans,and thus it is crucial to find a suitable treatment technology.In this study,La-Fe@PTA adsorbent was synthesized for the defluoridation of mine water.The results showed that the optimum conditions for defluoridation by La-Fe@PTA were p H close to 7.0,the initial F-concentration of 10 mg/L,the dosage of 0.5 g/L and the adsorption time of 240 min.Compared with SO_4^(2-),Cl^(-),NO_(3)^(-),Ca^(2+)and Mg^(2+),CO_(3)^(2-)and HCO_(3)^(-)presented severer inhibition on fluoride uptake by La-Fe@PTA.The adsorption process fits well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich model,and the maximum adsorption capacity of Langmuir model was 95 mg/g.Fixed-bed adsorption results indicated that fluoride in practical fluorinated mine water could be effectively removed from 3.6 mg/L to less than 1.5 mg/L within130 bed volume(BV)by using 1.5 g La-Fe@PTA.Furthermore,the adsorbent still had good adsorption capacity after regeneration,which confirms the great application potential of La-Fe@PTA as a fluoride ion adsorbent.The mechanism analysis showed that La-Fe@PTA adsorption of fluorine ions is a physicochemical reaction driven by electrostatic attraction and ion exchange.
