On the variability of vertical eddy heat flux in the upper ocean

Ocean eddies produce strong vertical heat flux(VHF)in the upper ocean,exerting profound influences on the climate and ecosystem.Currently,mooring array provides a standard way to estimate the eddy-induced VHF(EVHF)based on the adiabatic potential density equation.Apart from the validity of adiabatic assumption,it remains unclear to what extent the estimated EVHF at a single location within a limited time period is representative of its climatological mean value.In this study,we analyzed the above issue by systematically evaluating the variability of EVHF simulated by a 1-km ocean model configured over the Kuroshio Extension.It is found that the EVHF at a single location exhibits pronounced variability.Even averaged over one year that is comparable to the current maintenance capacity of mooring array,the EVHF still deviates significantly from its climatological mean value.For more than 49%of locations in our computational domain(31°-40°N,149°-166°E),the discrepancy between the one-year mean EVHF and its climatological mean value at the peaking depth is larger than the climatological mean itself.The mesoscale eddies play a dominant role in the variability of EVHF but contribute little to the climatological mean EVHF;the opposite is true for submesoscale eddies.Our findings indicate that nested mooring array allowing for isolating the effects of submesoscale eddies will be useful to obtain climatological mean EVHF.

Self-assembly of phosphorylated peptide driven by Dy3+

Nature chooses phosphorylation as a key modification to modulate and program the functions of proteins.Various phosphorylated peptides(PPs) have been widely identified and investigated by biologists, but the possibility that PPs could become a building unit for artificial materials is neglected. Here we report for the first time a supramolecular assembly of PPs with the assistance of dysprosium ions(Dy3+). Dy3+bridges multiple phosphate groups in double-phosphorylated peptides(di-PPs), and braid these peptide chains into nanofibers. The assembly occurs inside nanochannels and blocks the channels, leading to prominent “ON–OFF” switching in transmembrane ionic current. The di-PPs’ assembling process could be dynamically regulated by the addition or deletion of phosphate groups under the control of kinases or phosphatases. This study proves the huge potential of PPs being utilized as materials via self-assembling,which will promote the design of novel bio-inspired artificial materials and devices.

DNA nanomaterials hold great promise in biomedical fields due to its excellent sequence programmability,molecular recognition ability and biocompatibility.Hybridization chain reaction(HCR)is a simple and efficient isothermal enzyme-free amplification strategy of DNA,generating nicked double helices with repeated units.Through the design of HCR hairpins,multiple nanomaterials with desired functions are assembled by DNA,exhibiting great potential in biomedical applications.Herein,the recent progress of HCR-based DNA nanomaterials for biosensing,bioimaging and therapeutics are summarized.Representative works are exemplified to demonstrate how HCR-based DNA nanomaterials are designed and constructed.The challenges and prospects of the development of HCR-based DNA nanomaterials are discussed.We envision that rationally designing HCR-based DNA nanomaterials will facilitate the development of biomedical applications.

Optimal beamforming with aliasing cancellation in the spherical harmonics domain

The existing beamforming with aliasing elimination in the spherical harmonics domain usually adopts a single design goal,making it challenging to adapt to diverse application scenarios.Therefore,we propose optimal beamforming with aliasing cancellation in the spherical harmonics domain and establish a corresponding multiply constrained convex optimization model with a second-order cone programming form.Benefiting from this model,we further propose a maximum directivity beamformer with sidelobe constraint and aliasing cancellation,a robust maximum directivity beamformer with aliasing cancellation,a minimum variance distortionless response beamformer with aliasing elimination,and a maximum directivity beamformer with null constraint and aliasing elimination.The proposed method not only inherits the aliasing-cancellation capability of the existing aliasing cancellation beamforming,but also achieves a proper trade-off among multiple conflicting performance measures such as directivity factor,white noise gain,and sidelobe level.Hence,the proposed optimal beamforming provides users with the flexibility to adjust the constraint parameters according to actual application requirements and thus obtain a beamformer with the best all-around performance in a specific scenario.

To the Editor:Cancer has been recognized as an independent predisposing factor of venous thromboembolism(VTE),including pulmonary embolism(PE)and deep vein thrombosis(DVT).Patients with cancer have a sevenfold increased risk of VTE compared with those without cancer.[1]Evidence from autopsy in cancer patients showed that PE is an important disease complication in patients with cancer.[2]Optimal management of PE patients with cancer has become a major concern that challenges clinicians in daily clinical practice.Understanding the risk factors of all-cause death in PE patients with cancer in the real world may enable optimal management and improve their survival.Therefore,this study was performed to characterize cancerassociated PE and evaluate the clinical predictors of inhospital death based on the data of PE patient population in China.

本文使用基于Transformer模型的深度学习算法成功发现了中国A股市场的月频动量效应,并通过分析模型的信息挖掘机制解释了过去A股市场的“月频动量效应消失之谜”。具体而言本文证实Transformer模型能够利用高维嵌入算法与注意力机制成功甄别以彩票型股票偏好和非理性交易行为为代表的市场噪音,在去除相应的干扰因素后中国A股市场存在显著的月频动量效应,多空组合能够获得0.29%的平均月度收益。进一步地本文从行为金融的视角对A股市场动量效应的形成机制进行了相应分析,证实投资者对市场信息的反应不足是动量效应存在的重要原因。本文研究证实深度学习算法可以利用算力优势挖掘增量信息并增强传统因子的定价能力,对提升资本市场定价效率和投资实践具有一定的启示意义。

Effect of Interfacial Strength on the Flexural Behavior of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer(GFRP) Reinforced Concrete Beam

The reinforcement/matrix interfacial strength has been considered as the key factor when glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP) bar is mixed with concrete. In this paper, based on micromechanics, fourpoint bending numerical models with and without glass fiber of different interfacial strength have been set up to simulate the damage process of GFRP reinforced concrete beam. The results show that the higher the interfacial strength is, the higher the ultimate bearing capacity of beams, and the less the opening width and height of cracks will be reached. Furthermore, mixing of glass fibers has less influence on the damage process when the interfacial strength is weak, however, it can help to improve the ultimate bearing capacity of the beams, retard the expansion of cracks and improve the toughness when the interfacial strength is high.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a fatal disorder characterized by pulmonary vascular remodeling and obstruction. The phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) family hydrolyzes cyclic AMP (cAMP) and is comprised of four subtypes (PDE4A–D). Previous studies have shown the beneficial effects of pan-PDE4 inhibitors in rodent PH;however, this class of drugs is associated with side effects owing to the broad inhibition of all four PDE4 isozymes. Here, we demonstrate that PDE4B is the predominant PDE isozyme in lungs and that it was upregulated in rodent and human PH lung tissues. We also confirmed that PDE4B is mainly expressed in the lung endothelial cells (ECs). Evaluation of PH in Pde4b wild type and knockout mice confirmed that Pde4b is important for the vascular remodeling associated with PH. In vivo EC lineage tracing demonstrated that Pde4b induces PH development by driving endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT), and mechanistic studies showed that Pde4b regulates EndMT by antagonizing the cAMP-dependent PKA–CREB–BMPRII axis. Finally, treating PH rats with a PDE4B-specific inhibitor validated that PDE4B inhibition has a significant pharmacological effect in the alleviation of PH. Collectively, our findings indicate a critical role for PDE4B in EndMT and PH, prompting further studies of PDE4B-specific inhibitors as a therapeutic strategy for PH.

Silicosis is a leading cause of occupational disease-related morbidity and mortality worldwide,but the molecular basis underlying its development remains unclear.An accumulating body of evidence supports gasdermin D(GSDMD)-mediated pyroptosis as a key component in the development of various pulmonary diseases.However,there is little experimental evidence connecting silicosis and GSDMD-driven pyroptosis.In this work,we investigated the role of GSDMD-mediated pyroptosis in silicosis.Single-cell RNA sequencing of healthy and silicosis human and murine lung tissues indicated that GSDMD-induced pyroptosis in macrophages was relevant to silicosis progression.Through microscopy we then observed morphological alterations of pyroptosis in macrophages treated with silica.Measurement of interleukin-1βrelease,lactic dehydrogenase activity,and real-time propidium iodide staining further revealed that silica induced pyroptosis of macrophages.Additionally,we verified that both canonical(caspase-1-mediated)and non-canonical(caspase-4/5/11-mediated)signaling pathways mediated silica-induced pyroptosis activation,in vivo and in vitro.Notably,Gsdmd knockout mice exhibited dramatically alleviated silicosis phenotypes,which highlighted the pivotal role of pyroptosis in this disease.Taken together,our results demonstrated that macrophages underwent GSDMD-dependent pyroptosis in silicosis and inhibition of this process could serve as a viable clinical strategy for mitigating silicosis.

为解决现有的球谐域混叠消除波束形成方法设计目标单一、难以很好地兼容多变的应用场景的问题,提出了球谐域混叠消除最优波束形成方法,并建立了其二阶锥规划形式的多重约束凸优化数学模型。得益于该数学模型,提出了旁瓣约束的混叠消除最大指向性波束形成器、鲁棒的混叠消除最大指向性波束形成器、混叠消除最小方差无失真响应波束形成器、零点约束的混叠消除最大指向性波束形成器。提出方法继承了现有球谐域混叠消除波束形成方法的混叠消除功能,且能够在指向性指数、白噪声增益、旁瓣水平等多个冲突的性能指标之间寻求适宜折中,便于用户根据实际应用需求灵活地调整约束参数得到特定场景下综合性能最优的波束形成器。
