Deoxygenation has frequently appeared in coastal ecosystems over the past century due to the joint infl uence of increasing anthropogenically induced nutrient inputs and global warming.The semi-enclosed Bohai Sea is a typical system that is prone to deoxygenation,with regular hypoxia events consistently recorded in recent decades.Based on in-situ observation data collected in large-scale voyage surveys in the Bohai Sea during 2008-2017,the seasonal variability in dissolved oxygen(DO)and its controlling mechanisms were studied.The results indicated that in spring and autumn,the DO distributions exhibited similar spatial patterns in the surface and bottom layers,while in summer,its spatial distribution was characterized by large-scale oxygen-poor zones distributed off the Qinhuangdao Coast and the central southern Bohai Sea in the bottom layer.The controlling mechanisms of the DO distribution varied from season to season.Spring and autumn DO distributions were dominated by the seawater temperature.Under the combined eff ects of stratifi cation and decomposition,the summer bottom DO exhibited dual-core distribution.On the one hand,stratifi cation could greatly impede vertical mixing,resulting in reduced bottom DO replenishment.On the other hand,the increased bottom organic matter intensifi ed the decomposition processes,inducing massive DO consumption and elevated dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations.In addition,the stronger stratifi cation might be the reason for the more severe deoxygenation in the southern oxygen-poor zones in summer.Our study provides guidance for an in-depth understanding of the DO seasonality in the Bohai Sea and the mechanisms that modulate it and for the improvement of hypoxia forecasts in ocean models.

Microsurgical treatment of posterior inferior cerebellar aneurysms based on angioarchitecture supplemented by high-resolution vessel wall MRI:a case series report

Background Surgical treatment of posterior inferior cerebellar artery(PICA)aneurysms is challenging because many are nonsaccular and atherosclerotic.We report our tailored approach to PICA aneurysms,which is based on angioarchitecture supplemented by high-resolution vessel wall MRI(HR-VW MRI)findings.Methods From March 2010 to September 2020,27 patients with 29 PICA aneurysms underwent surgical treatment in our institution.Since October 2016,HR-VW MRI has been used for aneurysmal wall assessment.Clinical characteristics,radiological data and surgical outcomes were analysed.Results Nineteen proximal PICA aneurysms(vertebral artery(VA),P1,P2 and P3)were treated using the far-lateral approach.Ten distal PICA aneurysms(P4,P5)were treated using the suboccipital midline approach.Direct clipping or clip reconstruction was achieved in 19 aneurysms.Ten were trapped in conjunction with extracranial-intracranial or intracranial-intracranial bypass,including three occipital artery-PICA reimplantations,three PICA-VA reimplantations,two PICA-PICA side-to side anastomoses,one PICA-PICA reimplantation and one PICA-PICA reanastomosis.All aneurysms were eventually completely obliterated and all bypasses remained patent.At the last follow-up,26 patients(96.2%)achieved a good outcome(modified Rankin Scale scorelipped.Conclusion PICA aneurysms have a higher frequency of complex features such as large or giant size and fusiform or dissecting morphology.Favourable outcomes were achieved with individualised microsurgical strategies based on angioarchitecture.HR-VW MRI may be used as a promising technique to predict aneurysmal atherosclerosis.

Background: The transcription factor Homeobox C8 (HOXC8) is overexpressed and regulates many important genes involved in the proliferation and invasion of many malignant tumors. However, the function of HOXC8 in gliomas remains unclear. Method: Based on the Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA) set, HOXC8 expression is negatively correlated with overall survival (OS). Small interfering RNA (si-HOXC8) was used to downregulate the mRNA and protein expression levels of HOXC8 to assess glioma cell proliferation, migration and invasion. Results: Patients with higher HOXC8 levels showed poorer prognosis. DAVID analysis results indicated that HOXC8 was related to cell cycle, cell adhesion and immune response. In U251 and LN229 glioma cells treated with small interfering RNA for HOXC8 (si-HOXC8) for gene knockdown, significantly lower cell capacity of growth, migration and invasion was observed. Moreover, HOXC8 knockdown could reduce the protein expression of classical epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) related markers. Conclusion: HOXC8 may play an important role in glioma proliferation, migration and invasion. These findings indicated that HOXC8 may constitute a novel target for glioma treatment.

Seasonal characteristics and formation mechanism of the thermohaline structure of mesoscale eddy in the South China Sea

The seasonal characteristics and formation mechanism of the thermohaline structure of mesoscale eddy in the South China Sea are investigated using the latest eddy dataset and ARMOR3D data. Eddy-centric composites reveal that the horizontal distribution of temperature anomaly associated with eddy in winter is more of a dipole pattern in upper 50 m and tends to be centrosymmetric below 50 m, while in summer the distribution pattern is centrosymmetric in the entire water column. The horizontal distribution of eddy-induced salinity anomaly exhibits similar seasonal characteristics, except that the asymmetry of the salinity anomaly is weaker. The vertical distribution of temperature anomaly associated with eddy shows a monolayer structure, while the salinity anomaly demonstrates a triple-layer structure. Further analysis indicates that the vertical distribution of the anomalies is related to the vertical structure of background temperature and salinity fields, and the asymmetry of the anomalies in upper 50 m is mainly caused by the horizontal advection of background temperature and salinity.

The chlorophyll a(Chl a)is an important indicator of marine ecosystems.The spatiotemporal variation of the Chl a greatly aff ects the mariculture and marine ranching in coastal waters of the Shandong Peninsula.In the current study,the climatology and seasonal variability of surface Chl-a concentration around the Shandong Peninsula are investigated based on 16 years(December 2002-November 2018)of satellite observations.The results indicate that the annual mean Chl-a concentration is greater in the Bohai Sea than in the Yellow Sea and decreases from coastal waters to off shore waters.The highest Chl-a concentrations are found in Laizhou Bay(4.2-8.0 mg/m^(3)),Haizhou Bay(4.2-5.9 mg/m^(3))and the northeast coast of the Shandong Peninsula(4.4-5.0 mg/m^(3)),resulting from the combined eff ects of the intense riverine input and long residence time caused by the concave shape of the coastline.The seasonal Chl-a concentration shows a significant spatial variation.The Chl-a concentrations in these three subregions generally exhibit an annual maximum in August/September,due to the combined eff ects of sea surface temperature,river discharge and sea surface wind.In the southeast coast region,however,the Chl-a concentration is lowest throughout the year and reaches a maximum in February with a minimum in July,forced by the seasonal evolution of the Yellow Sea Cold Water and monsoon winds.The interannual Chl-a concentration trends vary among regions and seasons.There are significant increasing trends over a large area around Haizhou Bay from winter to summer,which are mainly caused by the rising sea surface temperature and eutrophication.In other coastal areas,the Chl-a concentration shows decreasing trends,which are clearest in summer and induced by the weakening land rainfall.This study highlights the differences in the Chl-a dynamics among regions around the Shandong Peninsula and is helpful for further studies of coupled physical-ecological-human interactions at multiple scales.

Repeated multiple intracranial hemorrhages induced by cardiac myxoma mimicking cavernous angiomas: a case report

Repeated intracranial hemorrhages caused by cardiac myxoma is very rare. It is essential for physicians to be aware of such uncommon clinical feature of myxoma. We report a-49-year-old female patient complained of repeated multiple intracranial hemorrhages, with no sign of cardiac dysfunction or cerebral infarction before admission. Cavernous angioma (CA) was misdiagnosded due to the clinical and magnetic resonance (MR) presentation. A sudden ischemic event after admission led to the finding of a left atrial myxoma. Repeated intracranial hemorrhages can be the early and primary clinical presentation of cardiac myxoma, probably caused by its metastasis, without obvious ischemic stroke or cardiac symptoms.

西北太平洋海表pH具有显著的长期酸化趋势和季节性变化。近十年来,位于黑潮延伸区的KEO浮标(144°36′E, 32°24′N)提供了丰富的观测数据。基于2008至2019年浮标海表实测盐度、温度、气压和CO2分压数据,利用CO2SYS程序重建了近原位海表pH时间序列,并对其年际趋势和季节变化进行了分析讨论。结果表明,KEO站点2008年至2019年海表pH下降速率为(2.18±0.52)×10-3/a,与日本周边海域pH下降速率趋势一致。气候态月平均pH在夏季最小,其季节变化与位于西北太平洋同一纬度的其他两个JMA(Japan Meteorological Agency)站点((137°E, 32°N)和(165°E, 32°N))相似。KEO站点的海表pH季节变化较邻近的近岸CL站点((140°22′E, 35°10′N),位于千叶县)更为显著。KEO站点海表pH最大下降速率发生在夏季(3.22±0.64)×10-3/a,与秋季(2.55±0.44)×10-3/a相当,其次发生在春季(1.89±0.42)×10-3/a,最后在冬季(1.66±0.37)×10-3/a,约为最大值的1/2。本研究所用时间序列较短(小于等于12年)且存在数据缺口,使得趋势计算具有较高不确定性,建议采用更长的时间序列进一步研究海洋酸化的年际和季节趋势差异。本研究有助于加深对黑潮延伸区海洋酸化的认识。

Tissue adhesive,ROS scavenging and injectable PRP-based‘plasticine’for promoting cartilage repair

Platelet-rich plasma(PRP)that has various growth factors has been used clinically in cartilage repair.However,the short residence time and release time at the injury site limit its therapeutic effect.The present study fabricated a granular hydrogel that was assembled from gelatin microspheres and tannic acid through their abundant hydrogen bonding.Gelatin microspheres with the gelatin concentration of 10wt%and the diameter distribution of 1-10 lm were used to assemble by tannic acid to form the granular hydrogel,which exhibited elasticity under low shear strain,but flowability under higher shear strain.The viscosity decreased with the increase in shear rate.Meanwhile,the granular hydrogel exhibited self-healing feature during rheology test.Thus,granular hydrogel carrying PRP not only exhibited well-performed injectability but also performed like a‘plasticine’that possessed good plasticity.The granular hydrogel showed tissue adhesion ability and reactive oxygen species scavenging ability.Granular hydrogel carrying PRP transplanted to full-thickness articular cartilage defects could integrate well with native cartilage,resulting in newly formed cartilage articular fully filled in defects and well-integrated with the native cartilage and subchondral bone.The unique features of the present granular hydrogel,including injectability,plasticity,porous structure,tissue adhesion and reactive oxygen species scavenging provided an ideal PRP carrier toward cartilage tissue engineering.
