Confidence interval of intrinsic optimum temperature estimated using thermodynamic SSI model

The intrinsic optimum temperature for the development of ectotherms is one of the most important factors not only for their physiological processes but also for ecolog- ical and evolutional processes. The Sharpe-Schoolfield-Ikemoto （SSI） model succeeded in defining the temperature that can thermodynamically meet the condition that at a par- ticular temperature the probability of an active enzyme reaching its maximum activity is realized. Previously, an algorithm was developed by Ikemoto （Tropical malaria does not mean hot environments. Journal of Medical Entomology, 45, 963-969） to estimate model parameters, but that program was computationally very time consuming. Now, investi- gators can use the SSI model more easily because a full automatic computer program was designed by shi et al. （A modified program for estimating the parameters of the SSI model. Environmental Entomology, 40, 462-469）. However, the statistical significance of the point estimate of the intrinsic optimum temperature for each ectotherm has not yet been determined. Here, we provided a new method for calculating the confidence interval of the estimated intrinsic optimum temperature by modifying the approximate bootstrap confidence intervals method. For this purpose, it was necessary to develop a new program for a faster estimation of the parameters in the SSI model, which we have also done.

Microstructure, thermal properties, and corrosion behaviors of FeSiBAlNi alloy fabricated by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering

An equiatomic FeSiBAlNi amorphous high-entropy alloy （HEA） was fabricated by mechanical alloying （MA）. A fully amorphous phase was obtained in the FeSiBAlNi HEA after 240 h of MA. The bulk FeSiBAlNi samples were sintered by spark plasma sintering （SPS） at 520 and 1080℃ under a pressure of 80 MPa. The sample sintered at 520℃ exhibited an amorphous composite structure comprising solid-solution phases （body-centered cubic （bcc） and face-centered cubic （fee） phases）. When the as-milled amorphous HEA was consoli- dated at 1080℃, another fcc phase appeared and the amorphous phase disappeared. The sample sintered by SPS at 1080℃ exhibited a slightly higher melting temperature compared with those of the as-milled alloy and the bulk sample sintered at 520℃. The corrosion behav- iors of the as-sintered samples were investigated by potentiodynamic polarization measurements and immersion tests in seawater solution. The results showed that the HEA obtained by SPS at 1080℃ exhibited better corrosion resistance than that obtained by SPS at 520℃.

Testing the rate isomorphy hypothesis using five statistical methods

Organisms are said to be in developmental rate isomorphy when the pro- portions of developmental stage durations are unaffected by temperature. Comprehensive stage-specific developmental data were generated on the cabbage beetle, Colaphellus bowringi Baly （Coleoptera： Chrysomelidae）, at eight temperatures ranging from 16℃ to 30℃ （in 2℃ increments） and five analytical methods were used to test the rate isomor- phy hypothesis, including：（i） direct comparison of lower developmental thresholds with standard errors based on the traditional linear equation describing developmental rate as the linear function of temperature; （ii） analysis of covariance to compare the lower devel- opmental thresholds of different stages based on the Ikemoto-Takai linear equation; （iii） testing the significance of the slope item in the regression line of arcsin（√p） versus tem- perature, where p is the ratio of the developmental duration of a particular developmental stage to the entire pre-imaginal developmental duration for one insect or mite species; （iv） analysis of variance to test for significant differences between the ratios of developmental stage durations to that ofpre-imaginal development; and （v） checking whether there is an element less than a given level of significance in the p-value matrix of rotating regres- sion line. The results revealed no significant difference among the lower developmental thresholds or among the aforementioned ratios, and thus convincingly confirmed the rate isomorphy hypothesis.

Capturing the interaction types of two Bt toxins CrylAc and Cry2Ab on suppressing the cotton bollworm by using multi-exponential equations

Transgenic crops are increasingly promoted for their practical effects on suppressing certain insect pests, but all transgenic crops are not equally successful. The insect pests can easily develop resistance against single Bacillus thuringiensis （Bt） toxin trans- genic crops. Therefore, transgenic crops including two or more mixed Bt-toxins can solve this problem by delaying the resistance development and killing the majority of targeted pests before the evolution of resistance. It is important to test the controlling effects of transgenic crops including multiple mixed toxins on a particular insect pest. Previous research has checked the cross-resistance and interactions between Bt toxins CrylAc and Cry2Ab against one susceptible and four resistant strains of cotton bollworm. The results showed that independence was the main interaction type between two toxins for the susceptible strain, whereas synergism was the main interaction type for any one resistant strain. However, the optimal combinations of two toxins were not obtained. In the present study, we developed two multi-exponential equations （namely bi- and tri-exponential equations） to describe the combination effects of two Bt toxins. Importantly, the equations can provide predictions of combination effects of different continuous concentrations of two toxins. We compared these two multi-exponential equations with the generalized linear model （GLM） in describing the combination effects, and found that the bi- and tri-exponential equations are better than GLM. Moreover, the bi-exponential equation can also provide the optimal dose combinations for two toxins.

Oxygen vacancy boosting Fenton reaction in bone scaffold towards fighting bacterial infection

Bacterial infection is a major issue after artificial bone transplantation due to the absence of antibacterial function of bone scaffold,which seriously causes the transplant failure and even amputation in severe *** this study,oxygen vacancy(OV)defects Fe-doped Ti O2(OV-FeTiO2)nanoparticles were synthesized by nano TiO2and Fe3O4via high-energy ball milling,which was then incorporated into polycaprolactone/polyglycolic acid(PCLGA)biodegradable polymer matrix to construct composite bone scaffold with good antibacterial activities by selective laser *** results indicated that OV defects were introduced into the core/shell-structured OV-FeTiO2nanoparticles through multiple welding and breaking during the high-energy ball milling,which facilitated the adsorption of hydrogen peroxide(H2O2)in the bacterial infection microenvironment at the bone transplant *** accumulated H2O2could amplify the Fenton reaction efficiency to induce more hydroxyl radicals(·OH),thereby resulting in more bacterial deaths through·OH-mediated oxidative *** antibacterial strategy had more effective broad-spectrum antibacterial properties against Gram-negative Escherichia coli(***)and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus(***).In addition,the PCLGA/OV-FeTiO2scaffold possessed mechanical properties that match those of human cancellous bone and good biocompatibility including cell attachment,proliferation and osteogenic differentiation.

Diffractive neural networks with improved expressive power for gray-scale image classification

Performance analysis of a photovoltaic/thermal system with lunar regolith-based thermal storage for the lunar base

Powering a moon base,especially keeping it warm during the long lunar night,is a big *** paper introduces a photovoltaic/thermal(PV/T)system incorporating regolith thermal storage to solve the challenge of power and heat provision for the lunar base *** vacuum of space around the moon helps this system by reducing heat *** the moon's daytime,the system not only generates electricity but also captures *** stored heat in the regolith is then used at night,reducing the amount of equipment we need to send from *** spectrally selective PV/T panels are designed to absorb a wide range of sunlight(0.3–2.5μm)while minimizing heat loss in the infrared range(3–30μm).Simulation results of the hybrid solar energy system indicate the average value of the overall efficiency is 45.9%,which relatively elevates 56.1%compared to the PV *** launch mass of the proposed PV/T system is only 8.4%of a traditional photovoltaic-lithium battery system with the same amount of energy *** the total specific energy of the proposed system is 7.3 kWh kg^(-1),while that of the photovoltaic-lithium battery system is about 0.3 kWh kg^(-1).In summary,this study proposes an alternative combined heat and electricity supply system for the lunar base,which can greatly reduce the launch mass and free up load for other scientific research equipment.

Mechanism of plant-soil feedback in a degraded alpine grassland on the Tibetan Plateau

Although biotic and abiotic factors have been confirmed to be critical factors that affect community dynamics, their interactive effects have yet to be fully considered in grassland degradation. Herein, we tested how soil nutrients and microbes regulated plant-soil feedback (PSF) in a degraded alpine grassland. Our results indicated that soil total carbon (STC; from 17.66 to 12.55 g/kg) and total nitrogen (STN; from 3.16 to 2.74 g/kg) exhibited significant (P shift from monocots with higher vulnerability to soil pathogens in the ND fertile soil to dicots with higher dependence on nutritional mutualists in the degraded infertile soil. The emerging irreversible eco-evolutionary in PSF after degradation might cause a predicament for the restoration of degraded grassland.
