Multi-junction cascaded vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser with a high power conversion efficiency of 74%

High electro-optical conversion efficiency is one of the most distinctive features of semiconductor lasers as compared to other types of lasers.Its further increase remains a significant objective.Further enhancing the efficiency of edgeemitting lasers(EEL),which represent the highest efficiency among semiconductor lasers at present,is challenging.The efficiency of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers(VCSELs)has always been relatively low compared to EEL.This paper,combining modeling with experiments,demonstrates the potential of multi-junction cascaded VCSELs to achieve high efficiency beyond that of EELs,our simulations show,that a 20-junction VCSEL can achieve an efficiency of more than 88%at room temperature.We fabricated VCSEL devices with different numbers of junctions and compared their energy efficiency.15-junction VCSELs achieved a maximum efficiency of 74%at room temperature under nanosecond driving current,the corresponding differential quantum efficiency exceeds 1100%,being the largest electro-optical conversion efficiency and differential quantum efficiency reported until now for VCSELs.

Energy transformation is imminent,and hydrogen energy is one of the important new energy sources.One of the keys to increasing the rate of hydrogen evolution during electrolysis is the use of high-performance catalysts for oxygen evolution reactions(OER).Single-atom alloys(SAAs)have garnered significant attention because they partially reduce costs and combine the advantages of both single-atom catalysts(SACs)and alloy catalysts.Herein,an efficient pyrolysis strategy based on a mixing and drying process is designed to anchor ultra-small Co cluster particles,combined with Ru single atoms dispersed on nitrogen-doped ultra-thin carbon nanosheets(Ru_(1)Co SAA/NC).The prepared electrocatalyst exhibits superior OER activity and superb stability,demonstrating an overpotential of 238 mV for OER with a current density of 10 mA·cm^(-2) in 0.5 mol/L H_(2)SO_(4).And we also utilized in-situ XAS to detect the oxidation state of Ru sites during OER.All in all,this method achieves cost reductions and efficiency improvements through the design of SAAs,offering new prospects for the structural transformation of clean energy.

In petroleum engineering,real-time lithology identification is very important for reservoir evaluation,drilling decisions and petroleum geological exploration.A lithology identification method while drilling based on machine learning and mud logging data is studied in this paper.This method can effectively utilize downhole parameters collected in real-time during drilling,to identify lithology in real-time and provide a reference for optimization of drilling parameters.Given the imbalance of lithology samples,the synthetic minority over-sampling technique(SMOTE)and Tomek link were used to balance the sample number of five lithologies.Meanwhile,this paper introduces Tent map,random opposition-based learning and dynamic perceived probability to the original crow search algorithm(CSA),and establishes an improved crow search algorithm(ICSA).In this paper,ICSA is used to optimize the hyperparameter combination of random forest(RF),extremely random trees(ET),extreme gradient boosting(XGB),and light gradient boosting machine(LGBM)models.In addition,this study combines the recognition advantages of the four models.The accuracy of lithology identification by the weighted average probability model reaches 0.877.The study of this paper realizes high-precision real-time lithology identification method,which can provide lithology reference for the drilling process.

Regulatory T(T_(reg))cells play an essential role in maintaining immune balance across various physiological and pathological conditions.However,the mechanisms underlying T_(reg)homeostasis remain incompletely understood.Here,we report that RIPK1 is crucial for T_(reg) cell survival and homeostasis.We generated mice with T_(reg) cell-specific ablation of Ripk1 and found that these mice developed fatal systemic autoimmunity due to a dramatic reduction in the Treg cell compartment caused by excessive cell death.Unlike conventional T cells,Treg cells with Ripk1 deficiency were only partially rescued from cell death by blocking FADD-dependent apoptosis.However,simultaneous removal of both Fadd and Ripk3 completely restored the homeostasis of Ripk1-deficient Treg cells by blocking two cell death pathways.Thus,our study highlights the critical role of RIPK1 in regulating Treg cell homeostasis by controlling both apoptosis and necroptosis,thereby providing novel insights into the mechanisms of Treg cell homeostasis.

Socio-scientific quantification of the comprehensive benefits of debris flow mitigation measures for villages in western Sichuan, China

Debris flow hazards seriously threaten thesafety and sustainable development of mountainousareas. Numerous debris flow mitigation measures havebeen implemented worldwide;however, acomprehensive assessment of the specific disasterreduction effects of these measures and their economic,social and ecological benefits is yet to be performed.The western region of Sichuan Province frequentlysuffers from geohazards such as debris flow, and thegovernment has adopted many mitigation measures.This study assessed the benefits of debris flowmitigation measures and identified the key influencingfactors via a field-based study conducted in 81 villagesin western Sichuan province, China. A framework forthe evaluation of the benefits of rural debris flowmitigation measures was constructed andquantitatively evaluated using a survey. Snowballsampling was performed to recruit 81 village leadersand 468 farmers. The results showed that managementand engineering measures were the main methodsused to mitigate debris flow;ecological measures wereauxiliary. The average satisfaction scores of farmers forthese three types of measures were 4.07, 3.90, and 3.56,respectively (as measured on a five-point Likert scale).In contrast, in terms of the benefits of these mitigationmeasures, only a small proportion of villages (11.11%)obtained a high level of comprehensive benefits fromthe debris flow mitigation measures, while the majority(88.89%) received medium to low-level benefits. Toimprove this situation, we further studied and foundthat the main factors that restricted villages fromachieving high-level comprehensive benefits were theunpredictable nature of debris flows, labour forceoutflow and remoteness. Effective control measures, agood economic environment and strong governmentassistance were reported as crucial factors forimproving these comprehensive benefits. This studyprovides socio-scientific references for decisionmakingon rural debris flow mitigation measures while keeping villages at the centre of economic development.

Intelligent electromagnetic interference(EMI)shielding modulators with a wide tuning range and cyclic stability are urgently needed but their fabrication remains challenging.A gel-like MXene/norepinephrine ink is developed and multifunctional MXene gratings with wide EMI shielding effectiveness(SE)tuning range,superior reversibility,and high mechanical flexibility are constructed by direct ink writing approach for dynamic EMI shielding and patterned Joule heating applications.The modulable MXene/norepinephrine grating with a high conductivity of 3510 S·cm-1 can conveniently realize the seamless modulation of the EMI SE by adjusting the angle between the MXene grating filaments and the electric field of the incident electromagnetic waves,offering highly reversible switching between shielding“On”(28.0 dB)and“Off”(0.5 dB)states.Notably,due to the optimized integration of the MXene ink and the rationally designed pattern,a superior specific EMI SE of 95,688.2 dB·cm^(2)·g^(-1) is achieved in the“On”state.Furthermore,the MXene/norepinephrine ink can be used to fabricate many complex patterned gratings with superior stability,instant responsibility,and superb mechanical flexibility,exhibiting a unique patterned Joule heating behavior.Direct writing of multifunctional gratings paves a means for developing intelligent EMI shielding materials,wearable electronic devices,and advanced thermal management materials.

What is already known about this topic?Kashin-Beck disease(KBD)is a chronic and degenerative osteoarthropathy characterized by cartilage degeneration.It is an endemic disease that is highly prevalent among the Chinese population and poses a significant health risk.What is added by this report?This is the first national report on the economic burden of KBD in China.According to the data from 2021,KBD has caused significant disease and economic burdens.The most substantial reduction in healthy life expectancy was observed among patients with degree II severity and those aged 60 years and older,resulting in a total indirect economic burden of 112.74 million Chinese Yuan(CNY).What are the implications for public health practice?The results of this study will contribute to informing the development of tailored prevention and control strategies by the government.These strategies will include targeted policies and recommendations for appropriate healthcare and financial subsidies,which will be based on the demographic characteristics of the endemic areas.

BACKGROUND Crohn’s disease(CD)is often misdiagnosed as intestinal tuberculosis(ITB).However,the treatment and prognosis of these two diseases are dramatically different.Therefore,it is important to develop a method to identify CD and ITB with high accuracy,specificity,and speed.AIM To develop a method to identify CD and ITB with high accuracy,specificity,and speed.METHODS A total of 72 paraffin wax-embedded tissue sections were pathologically and clinically diagnosed as CD or ITB.Paraffin wax-embedded tissue sections were attached to a metal coating and measured using attenuated total reflectance fourier transform infrared spectroscopy at mid-infrared wavelengths combined with XGBoost for differential diagnosis.RESULTS The results showed that the paraffin wax-embedded specimens of CD and ITB were significantly different in their spectral signals at 1074 cm^(-1) and 1234 cm^(-1) bands,and the differential diagnosis model based on spectral characteristics combined with machine learning showed accuracy,specificity,and sensitivity of 91.84%,92.59%,and 90.90%,respectively,for the differential diagnosis of CD and ITB.CONCLUSION Information on the mid-infrared region can reveal the different histological components of CD and ITB at the molecular level,and spectral analysis combined with machine learning to establish a diagnostic model is expected to become a new method for the differential diagnosis of CD and ITB.

BACKGROUND Schizophrenia is a severe psychiatric disease,and its prevalence is higher.However,diagnosis of early-stage schizophrenia is still considered a challenging task.AIM To employ brain morphological features and machine learning method to differentiate male individuals with schizophrenia from healthy controls.METHODS The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator and t tests were applied to select important features from structural magnetic resonance images as input features for classification.Four commonly used machine learning algorithms,the general linear model,random forest(RF),k-nearest neighbors,and support vector machine algorithms,were used to develop the classification models.The performance of the classification models was evaluated according to the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve(AUC).RESULTS A total of 8 important features with significant differences between groups were considered as input features for the establishment of classification models based on the four machine learning algorithms.Compared to other machine learning algorithms,RF yielded better performance in the discrimination of male schizophrenic individuals from healthy controls,with an AUC of 0.886.CONCLUSION Our research suggests that brain morphological features can be used to improve the early diagnosis of schizophrenia in male patients.
