Biogenic volatile organic compounds(VOCs)emitted by plants can reveal information about plant adaptation,defense processes,and biological ***,such VOC data may be utilized to capture phenotypic plant responses to the *** this study,the main objective was to evaluate the potential of biogenic compounds,including VOCs,to phenotype two pea cultivars,Ariel(susceptible)and Hampton(high levels of partial resistance)for resistance to Aphanomyces root rot *** were monitored non-destructively for VOC emission at three-time points(15,20,and 30 days after inoculation,DAI)using dynamic headspace sampling with gas chromatography-flame ionization detec-tion(GC-FID)system,as well as destructively at the end of the experiments,using solvent extraction and pyrolysis of both shoot and root tissues.A non-inoculated control(mock-inoculated with distilled water)was utilized to compare the plant responses within a *** common chemical peaks between control and inoculated samples of both culti-vars(RT_(cm))were analyzed after normalizing the relative peak intensity of inoculated samples with those of control samples,prior to a comparison between *** addi-tion,unique chemical peaks(RT_(uq))present in inoculated samples,but not in control sam-ples were also identified and their relative peak intensities were *** the released green leaf volatiles(RT_(cm)),the normalized relative peak intensity of hexanal emis-sion,at 20 DAI,was higher in Ariel than that of *** addition,several putative chemical peaks(both RT_(cm) and RT_(uq)),previously known as indicators for disease response,exhibited some differences in their emission rates between pea cultivars in at least one of the time *** destructive sampling revealed that shoot samples produced more putative unique biomarkers(RT_(uq))than the root *** on the differences in puta-tive chemical peaks between cultivars,this initial study supports the concept of utilizat

Understanding of resource requirements of vulnerable species is key for conservation ***,we used sta-ble carbon(δ13C)and nitrogen isotopes(δ15N)of hair from giant armadillos(Priodontes maximus)to understand individual resource *** collected hair from 19 giant armadillos analyzing 34 samples from the Brazilian Pan-tanal and compared the resource use between sexes and age *** also assessed the relationship of isotopic values with individuals’body mass and the habitat type *** observed a wide variation in resource use by giant armadillos,showing that individuals consume prey that feeds on distinct resources and occupies different habitat types,indicating that there is individual variation in foraging *** giant armadillos presented a mixed diet(C3/C4 resources,forests/open areas),but a quarter of individuals had strictly C4 diets(open areas).Males are more prone to forage on C4 resources,presenting an isotopic niche 2.6-times larger than that of *** presented diets more associated with habitats with high arboreal cover(C3 resources,forests),while adults foraged more in open areas(C4 resources).This result is mirrored by the positive relationship betweenδ13C values and body mass,suggesting that larger giant armadillos tend to feed more in open *** observed thatδ13C values decreased as individuals increased the use of habitats with high arboreal *** stress the importance of con-serving the natural mosaic in the Pantanal landscape for the species persistence,given that giant armadillos require all habitat types to fulﬁll their dietary,spatial,and developmental needs.

Nutritional supplements use in high-performance athletes is related with lower nutritional inadequacy from food

Background: The use of nutritional supplements(NS) among athletes is widespread. However, little is known about the relationship between nutritional adequacy and NS usage. The aims of this study were to evaluate the NS usage and to compare the nutritional intake from food and prevalence of micronutrient inadequacy(PMI) between NS users and ***: Portuguese athletes from 13 sports completed an NS usage questionnaire and a semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire assessing information over the previous 12 months. The estimated average requirement cut-point method was used to calculate PMI. General linear models were used to compare nutritional intake and NS usage. Chi-squared tests and logistic regression were performed to study, respectively,relationships and associations between PMI and NS ***: From the 244 athletes(66% males, 13–37 years), 64% reported NS usage. After adjustment, NS users showed a higher intake from food(p justment, NS users, irrespective of gender, reported lower PMI for calcium(OR = 0.28, 95%CI: 0.12–0.65), and female users for magnesium(OR = 0.06, 95%CI: 0.00–0.98).Conclusion: Athletes using NS reported a higher nutritional intake from food, and a lower PMI for several nutrients. Perhaps, those who were taking NS were probably the ones who would least benefit from it.

Background:In-hospital mortality in patients with coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is *** prognostic indices are needed to identify patients at high-risk of COVID-19 health *** aimed to determine the usefulness of the CONtrolling NUTritional status(CONUT)index as a potential prognostic indicator of mortality in COVID-19 patients upon hospital ***:Our study design is of a retrospective observational study in a large cohort of COVID-19 *** addition to descriptive statistics,a Kaplan-Meier mortality analysis and a Cox regression were performed,as well as receiver operating curve(ROC).Results:From February 5,2020 to january 21,2021,there was a total of 2969 admissions for COVID-19 at our hospital,corresponding to 2844 ***,baseline(within 4 days of admission)CONUT index could be scored for 1627(57.2%)***’age was 67.3±16.5 years and 44.9%were *** CONUT severity distribution was:194(11.9%)normal(0-1);769(47.2%)light(2-4);585(35.9%)moderate(5-8);and 79(4.9%)severe(9-12).Mortality of 30 days after admission was 3.1%in patients with normal risk CONUT,9.0%light,22.7%moderate,and 40.5%in those with severe CONUT(P<0.05).An increased risk of death associated with a greater baseline CONUT stage was sustained in a multivariable Cox regression model(P<0.05).An increasing baseline CONUT stage was associated with a longer duration of admission,a greater requirement for the use of non-invasive and invasive mechanical ventilation,and other clinical outcomes(all P<0.05).The ROC of CONUT for mortality had an area under the curve(AUC)and 95%confidence interval of 0.711(0.676-0746).Conclusion:The CONUT index upon admission is potentially a reliable and independent prognostic indicator of mortality and length of hospitalization in COVID-19 patients.

The main purpose of this paper is to implement a system capable of detecting faults in railway point mechanisms. This is achieved by developing an algorithm that takes advantage of three empirical criteria simultaneously capable of detecting faults from records of measurements of force against time. The system is dynamic in several respects： the base reference data is computed using all the curves free from faults as they are encountered in the experimental data; the algorithm that uses the three criteria simultaneously may be applied in on-line situations as each new data point becomes available; and recursive algorithms are applied to filter noise from the raw data in an automatic way. Encouraging results are found in practice when the system is applied to a number of experiments carried out by an industrial sponsor.

Analysis of Strehl ratio limit with superresolution binary phase filters

Several pupil filtering techniques have been developed in the last few years to obtain transverse superresolution （a narrower point spread function core）. Such a core decrease entails two relevant limitations： a decrease of the peak intensity and an increase of the sidelobe intensity. Here, we calculate the Strehl ratio as a function of the core size for the most used binary phase filters. Furthermore, we show that this relation approaches the fundamental limit of the attainable Strehl ratio at the focal plane for any filter. Finally, we show the calculation of the peak-to-sidelobe ratio in order to check the system viability in every application.
