Factors predicting poor prognosis in ischemic colitis

AIM： To determine the clinical, analytical and endoscopic factors related to ischemic colitis （IC） severity. METHODS： A total of 85 patients were enrolled in a retrospective study from January 1996 to May 2004. There were 53 females and 32 males （age 74.6 ± 9.4 years, range 45-89 years）. The patients were diagnosed as IC. The following variables were analyzed including age, sex, period of time from the appearance of symptoms to admission, medical history, medication, stool frequency, clinical symptoms and signs, blood tests （hemogram and basic biochemical profile）, and endoscopic findings. Patients were divided in mild IC group and severe IC group （surgery and/or death）. Qualitative variables were analyzed using chi-square test and parametric data were analyzed using Student＇s t test （P 〈 0.05）. RESULTS： The mild IC group was consisted of 69 patients （42 females and 27 males, average age 74.7 ± 12.4 years）. The severe IC group was composed of 16 patients （11 females and 5 males, average age of 73.8 ± 12.4 years）. One patient died because of failure of medical treatment （no surgery）, 15 patients underwent surgery （6 after endoscopic diagnosis and 9 after peroperatory diagnosis）. Eight of 85 patients （9.6%） died and the others were followed up as out-patients for 9.6 ± 3.5 mo. Demographic data, medical history, medication and stool frequency were similar in both groups （P 〉 0.05）. Seriously ill patients had less hematochezia than slightly ill patients （37.5% vs 86.9%, P = 0.000）. More tachycardia （45.4% vs 10.1%, P = 0.011） and a higher prevalence of peritonism signs （75% vs 5.7%, P = 0.000） were observed in the severe IC group while the presence and intensity of abdominal pain were similar between two groups. Two patients with severe IC had shock when admitted. Regarding analytical data, more seriously ill patients were found to have anemia and hyponatremia than the mildly ill patients （37.5% vs 10.1%, P = 0.014 and 46.6% vs 14.9%, P = 0.012, respectively）. In the last two decades the study of red blood cell elasticity using optical tweezers has known a rise appearing in the scientific research with regard to the various works carried out. Despite the various work done, no study has been done so far to study the influence of friction on the red blood cell indentation response using optical tweezers. In this study, we have developed a new approach to determine the coefficient of friction as well as the frictional forces of the red blood cell. This approach therefore allowed us to simultaneously carry out the indentation and traction test, which allowed us to extract the interfacial properties of the microbead red blood cell couple, among other things, the friction coefficient. This property would be extremely important to investigate the survival and mechanical features of cells, which will be of great physiological and pathological significance. But taking into account the hypothesis of friction as defined by the isotropic Coulomb law. The experiment performed for this purpose is the Brinell Hardness Test (DB).

Phosphorus fractions and sorption dynamics in the sediments of two Ca-SO4 water reservoirs in the central Argentine Andes

Phosphorus（P） fractionation and sorption behavior were studied in the sediments of two calcium-sulfate(Ca-SO4: Ca2+170 mg L-1; SO42-400 mg L-1) water reservoirs in the southern central Argentine Andes-El Carrizal Reservoir（ECR）,which stratifies in summer and El nihuil Reservoir（EnR）,which is vertically mixed throughout the year. Sediment size classes reflected the lithology of both basins and the reservoirs relative location: ECR（downstream from a valley adjacent to a mountain environment） had higher clay proportions while the sand fraction was more important in EnR（just next to a mountain environment）.In both reservoirs, the chemical composition revealed low alteration and calcium enrichment. Total P content was relatively high(1.1-1.6 mg P kg-1dry weight) as expected from the contribution of marine formations. P fractionation was dominated by Ca-P（ECR, 69% and EnR, 63%） followed by organic-P（23%）in summer-anoxic ECR and by iron/aluminum（Fe/Al）-P（27%） in oxic EnR. Batch experiments showed that sorption behavior in ECR had a typical Langmuir isotherm plot while in EnR that model fitted only at low dissolved P values(nd co-precipitation evidence was observed at higher P concentrations. It is proposed that lower Fe/Al-P content in anoxic（ECR） vs. oxic（EnR） sediments results from the P released from iron-bound phosphorus due to sulfate reduction-ferrous sulfide formation in an anoxic environment. This condition should enable ECR sediments to adsorb P into fresh oxidized iron,and EnR sediments to co-precipitate P with calcium due to Fe/Al-P saturation, as observed in batch experiments. This paper constitutes the first description of phosphorus content and dynamics in reservoir sediments in arid central western Argentina, where water sulfate concentrations are naturally high due to basin lithology.

One of the most important issues to resolve in parts manufactured from rapid manufacturing (RM) technologies is to know their behavior working under real conditions. Total quality manufacturing (TQM) is only possible if mechanical properties are well known in the design stage depending on the processing parameters. This work is mainly focused on testing of several samples made with different selective laser sintering (SLS) parameters and technologies. This procedure is the starting point to establish a basis for designing for RM and the standardization of RM testing. The experiments and the analysis of variance (AnOVA) analyzed the effects of several factors on mechanical properties. The SLS technologies were 3DSystem and EOS. The results show which factor has a large effect on the variables and the interaction between them. The conclusions are very useful for developing rules for designing (designing for RM) and creating new standard rules (ISO, AISI, and DIn) for RM materials and parts testing. The AnOVA gives a better knowledge of the effects of these factors and eliminates unimportant parameters.

Background:The aim of this review is to summarize the optical quality results in patients following the implantation of the V4c implantable collamer lens with a central port(ICL,STAAR Surgical Inc.).Main text:A literature search in several databases was carried out to identify those publications,both prospective,retrospective and/or comparative with other refractive surgery procedures,reporting optical outcomes of patients who were implanted with the V4c ICL model.A total of 17 clinical studies published between 2012 and 2021 were included in this review.A detailed analysis of the available data was performed including number of eyes,follow-up and preoperative spherical ***,the review focused on several optical parameters including higher-order aberrations(HOAs),modulation transfer function(MTF)cut-off frequency and Strehl *** review encompassed a total of 817 eyes measured using different optical devices based on Hartmann-Shack,retinal image quality measurement and ray-tracing technologies at different ***:The outcomes found in this review lead us to conclude that the ICL V4c model provides good optical quality,by means of different metrics,when implanted.
