Short-wavelength near infrared spectroscopy (SW-NIR) is a very rapid, versatile and precise technique, which can be used in many different situations and for very types of products and chemical compounds. Extended multiplicative signal correction (EMSC) is a modification of the standard MSC pre-processing method that allows the separation of physical light scattering effects from chemical (vibrational) light absorbance effects in spectra. In this paper, the EMSC is applied and compared with first derivate, second derivate, MSC and SNV in combination of PLSR to obtain robust models in terms of accuracy and predict ability with a reduced calibration data set using SW-NIR spectra of moisture in marzipan. The Extended Multiplicative Signal Correction—EMSC and combination methods provide the best results in terms of prediction ability and calibration SW-NIR spectra of moisture in marzipan. The best classification results were obtained by Extended Multiplicative Signal Correction followed by second derivates.

Efficient honey production requires knowledge about the behavior of the workers and the parameters that influence the strength of the colony. In this study, the objective was to analyze the interaction between the foraging behavior of worker honeybees and pollen storage levels in Africanized honeybees colonies. Colonies with low pollen storage increased pollen intake rates, but this value was 15% lower than colonies with high pollen storage, demonstrating a direct relationship between the pollen storage levels and foraging activity. The difference in pollen intake rates varied according to the number of foraging honeybees and pollen load collected by each individual. Under both high and low pollen storage, colonies returned pollen storage to initial level within 16 days, suggesting that honeybees regulate pollen storage levels around a homeostatic set point. Relationship between pollen storage levels and colony brood production was also found, indicating how alterations in the behavior of each individual can affect the strength of the colony.

In this work, a conceptual DFT investigation is carried out to study the electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction (SEAr) of 1,2-dimethoxybenzene and 3-(p-nitrobenzoyloxy)-but-3-en-2-one (a captodative olefin). Herein, we have studied the regioselectivity of such reactions considering the effect of solvents of different polarities and the presence of BF3 as the catalyst. Understanding the effect of the solvent and the role of the Lewis catalyst on the pathway of Friedel-Crafts reactions is important to further facilitate the introduction of side chains in aromatic rings with captodative olefins, and thus be able to synthesize compounds analogous to natural products, e.g., α-asarone. Global and local reactivity descriptors were obtained, finding a key role when these reactions take place in the presence of nonpolar solvents. In addition, the Intrinsic Reaction Coordinate diagrams (IRCs) were calculated. Such results of the free activation energy (ΔG‡) clearly show that this reaction is entirely regioselective, forming the unique product in the para position, in agreement with our predictions of the local reactivity descriptors obtained from the Parr functions, wherein the first reaction step, the carbon C4 of the aromatic compound 1,2-dimethoxybenzene is favored. Moreover, from the IRCs, we found that the reactivity of the para adduct increases in the presence of nonpolar solvents. Interestingly, considering a polar solvent (MeCN), the intermediate formed (σ-complex) is more stable since it presents a more significant charge transfer with the solvent than the intermediate in the presence of a nonpolar solvent, making a reaction more challenging to reach when the reaction is carried out in the presence of MeCN because of the increasing of the energetic barrier from σ-complex to the TS2 in the intrinsic reactive coordinate diagram. BACKGROUND The advent of flow diverters(FDs)has changed the scope of endovascular treatment options for intracranial aneurysms(IAs).FDs can effectively treat complex aneurysms in which both microsurgical and conventional endovascular options are less than ideal.12 The Pipeline Flex Embolization Device(PED;Medtronic,Irvine,California,USA)has been available in the USA for several years demon-strating positive *** recently,the PED Flex with enhanced delivery features has been introduced,and although decreased,thromboembolic complications are still a potential risk.3 In light of this,a new surface modification was applied to the PED Flex known as Shield Technology consisting of a phosphorylcholine layer covalently bound to its metal braids potentially reducing its thrombogenicity.4 Herein,we report our initial experience using the PED Flex with Shield Technology in the treatment of an unruptured fusiform aneurysm located in the middle cerebral artery(MCA)using dual-an-tiplatelet therapy.

AIM: To investigate the safety and efficacy of intravitreal dexamethasone implants(Ozurdex?/DEX) in patients with diabetic macular edema(DME) either na?ve or nonna?ve to anti-VEGF therapies who switched to DEX implant independent of response to anti-vascular endothelial growth factors(anti-VEGFs).METHODS: This was an audit retrospective review of medical records of patients with DME who switched to the DEX intravitreal implant. Patients were divided into 2 groups: patients na?ve to antiangiogenic therapy and patients who were previously treated with anti-VEGFs. Data regarding demographics, changes in mean best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA), central macular thickness(CMT), and intraocular pressure(IOP) was collected over 6 mo. The demographic data mean changes in BCVA, CMT, and IOP were compared. Six-month follow-up data of 47 patients(57 eyes), who either switched to DEX implant irrespective of response to previous treatments or were treatment na?ve before receiving DEX implant, was ***: Improvement in mean BCVA was observed from 1-4 mo after injection with a decreased effect at month 6 as expected, with better outcomes in na?ve compared to non-na?ve patients. A statistically relevant decrease in mean CMT was observed during the follow-up period. An increase in mean IOP was observed in the first 2 mo after DEX therapy. The mean number of injections of the overall population during the 6 mo was 1.3. A subgroup analysis showed no relevant difference between phakic versus pseudophakic patients relative to measured outcomes. There was no cataract progression during the follow-up period and no adverse events ***: This real-life setting study shows that intravitreal DEX implant is effective and safe. The timings of greater therapeutic impact are concordant with previous studies and suggest that earlier treatment with corticosteroids may have an additional benefit in na?ve patients.
