Two-Hour Creatinine Clearance and Glomerular Filtration Rate Estimated from Serum Cystatin C and Creatinine in the Elderly to Preoperative Period

Introduction: The utility of estimates of glomerular filtration rate based on creatinine and cystatin C serum levels to assess renal function in older surgical patients remains to be determined. Objective: To determine whether 2h-creatinine clearance (CrCl-2h) can be an adequate substitute for glomerular filtration rate estimates obtained by measuring serum cystatin C and creatinine in the elderly at preoperation. Methods: A total of 102 consecutive elder patients undergoing pre-anesthesia evaluation for routine surgeries were included. Study subjects were allocated into three groups: Group 1 (G1)—hypertensive diabetic patients, Group 2 (G2)—hypertensive patients, and Group 3 (G3)—non-hypertensive and non-diabetic patients. Two-hour urine collection was performed and CrCl-2h adjusted for ultrasonic residual bladder volume was estimated. GFR was estimated based on creatinine and cystatin C serum levels. Bland-Altman analysis was used to compare methods. Results: The mean difference between the evaluated methods and CrCl-2h was ·min-1·1.73 m-2 for Cys-GFR, and >20 mL·min-1·1.73 m-2 for Cr-GFR in all groups. CrCl-2h adjusted for ultrasonic residual bladder volume did not differ from non-adjusted CrCl-2h in none of the groups. Conclusion: Two-hour creatinine clearance was not an adequate substitute for GFR estimates based on creatinine and cystatin C serum levels in older patients at preoperation. The ultrasonic assessment of residual bladder volume had no significant influence on the calculation of two-hour creatinine clearance.

Short-wavelength near infrared spectroscopy (SW-NIR) is a very rapid, versatile and precise technique, which can be used in many different situations and for very types of products and chemical compounds. Extended multiplicative signal correction (EMSC) is a modification of the standard MSC pre-processing method that allows the separation of physical light scattering effects from chemical (vibrational) light absorbance effects in spectra. In this paper, the EMSC is applied and compared with first derivate, second derivate, MSC and SNV in combination of PLSR to obtain robust models in terms of accuracy and predict ability with a reduced calibration data set using SW-NIR spectra of moisture in marzipan. The Extended Multiplicative Signal Correction—EMSC and combination methods provide the best results in terms of prediction ability and calibration SW-NIR spectra of moisture in marzipan. The best classification results were obtained by Extended Multiplicative Signal Correction followed by second derivates.

The objective of this work is to provide an automatic system to count white blood cells in a blood smear. To do so an experiment was assembled, composed by a standard microscope with two step motors coupled to its knobs in order to move the microscope in x and y directions and a web cam which was mounted in the top of the microscope responsible for to acquire images from the smear. The step motors and the web cam are controlled by a microcomputer PC standard via software developed inDelphi. The motors use the parallel port to communicate with the PC and the camera use the USB port. The main idea is to set an initial point into the smear and the automated system will carry over the smear acquiring images (frames with 640 × 480 pixels) and counting the white blood cells encountered. The double histogram threshold technique is implemented to initially exclude the red cells from the image leaving only the white ones. Preliminaries results are obtained and show that the system is quite fast and has a good capacity of selection, even when different kinds of smear are used.

The chemical and physical properties of rhenium render it a highly demanded metal for advanced applications in important industrial fields. This very scarce element occurs mainly in ores of porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits associated with the mineral molybdenite, MoS2, but it has also been found in granite pegmatites and quartz veins as well as in volcanic gases. Molybdenite is a typical polytype mineral which crystal structure is based on the stacking of [S-Mo-S] with molybdenum in prismatic coordination by sulphide anions;however, it is not yet clearly established if rhenium ions replace Mo4+ cations in a disordered way or else, if such replacement gives rise to dispersed nanodomains of a rhenium-rich phase. As a contribution to clarify this question, an X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES) study using synchrotron radiation was performed at the Re L3-edge of rhenium-containing molybdenite samples. Obtained results are described and discussed supporting the generally accepted structural perspective that rhenium is mainly carried by molybdenite through the isomorphous replacement of Mo, rather than by the formation of dispersed Re-specific nanophase(s).

COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread exponentially worldwide, especially in America. At the end of August 2020, Brazil is one of the most affected countries with more than three and a half million cases and up to 114,250 deaths. This study aims to assess the fear and peri-traumatic stress during the COVID-19 pandemics in Brazil, to enhance infection control methods, appropriate interventions, and public health policies. A cross-sectional survey has been conducted from April 12th to 18th using the Peri-Traumatic Distress Scale (CPDI) and the Fear Scale (FCV-19S) aiming to measure the peri-traumatic stress and fear as psychological reactions during the COVID-19 pandemic. For that purpose, an online spreadsheet was used to send the questionnaire and scales to a sample of 1844 participants as a collecting information tool. Significant positive relationship (r = 0.660, p dary effects of COVID-19), equitable policies, and new approaches to control the pandemic.

Context and objectives :The unexpected pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) affected several activities and exposed workers, students and the large mass of unemployed people to an economic and psychological pressure that could lead to various problems, such as anxiety, fear, depression and insomnia, consequently causing impairment of quality of life. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted using the COVID-19 Peri-Traumatic Distress Index (CPDI) and the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S) to measure peri-traumatic stress and fear, such as psychological reactions during the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. An online spreadsheet was used as a data collection tool to send the questionnaire and scales to a sample of 1,844 participants. Data were analyzed in groups of health professionals, students and teachers, and an analysis was performed between unemployed and employed people in order to evaluate the impact of employment on the population’s mental health. Results: All groups presented from moderate to high CPDI and FCV-19S scores, and students and unemployed people had higher levels of stress and fear. Conclusion: COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the Brazilian population, with students and the unemployed showing the highest rates of stress and fear.

Background and Aims: Patients and the general public are under insurmountable psychological pressure which may lead to various psychological problems, such as anxiety, fear, depression, and insomnia, causing, consequently, the impaired quality of life. Psychological crisis intervention plays a pivotal role in the overall deployment of health-related quality of life and disease control. A novel Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS- CoV-2), a pathogen of the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19), has affected several sector activities, including people’s health. To enhance infection control methods, appropriate interventions, and public health policies, the present study aims to assess the fear and peri-traumatic stress during the COVID-19 inBrazil. The objective of the present study was to characterize the duration of the phenological stages, the agronomic characteristics and grain yield in soybean cultivars with contrasting cycles and indeterminate growth type, submitted to different fertilization investment environments under no-tillage system in the central region of Minas Gerais. The work was conducted under field conditions, in an experimental area of Embrapa Maize and Sorghum, in Sete Lagoas, MG, in the harvest of 2015/2016. Ten soybean cultivars with different relative maturity groups (RMG) were studied, representing almost all RMG materials currently sown in Minas Gerais, in two environments with different levels of fertilizer investment. The variables were submitted to analysis of joint variance, in order to verify the existence of interaction between cultivars and investment in fertilization environments. Fertilizer investment levels influence grain yield of soybean cultivars of contrasting cycles. The higher height of the soybean plants implies higher lodging and lower grain yield. This situation is aggravated by the greater investment in fertilization. The difference between the cycles of the cultivars is in the duration of the vegetative stages, being greater in the later cultivars.
