Factors affecting the dominance hierarchy dynamics in a hummingbird assemblage

Intra and in terspecific competiti on for n ectar play an imports nt role in hummingbird communities. Larger sized species usually exclude smaller species from the rich floral resources. However, it has been recently postulated that the competitive advantages of a large body size decline as the evolutionary distance between the contending species in creases. In this study, we analyzed dominance hierarchy dynamics in a hummingbird assemblage in central Mexico. By monitoring hummingbird territories established in three plant species through 1 year, we assessed the effects of energy within territories and the territory owners identity in the frequency of inter and intraspecific encounters. We also evaluated if these factors affect the dominance of larger species when they compete against smaller distantly related contenders. Our results show that their frequency of intraspecific encounters was related with the identity of the territory's owner. On the contrary, the frequency of interspecific encounters was related with both the territory and the identity of the territory's owner. We did not find a significant difference between the number of encounters dominated by larger and smaller species and their conte nders. However, the in crease in genetic dista nee between contenders was positively associated with a higher frequency of encounters dominated by small *** results showed that the ecological factors and evolutionary relationships among contenders play important roles in the dominance hierarchy dynamics.

Colorectal cancer(CRC)remains the third most prevalent cancer disease and involves a multi-step process in which intestinal cells acquire malignant *** is well established that the appearance of distal metastasis in CRC patients is the cause of a poor prognosis and treatment ***,in the last decades,CRC aggressiveness and progression have been attributed to a specific cell population called CRC stem cells(CCSC)with features like tumor initiation capacity,self-renewal capacity,and acquired multidrug *** data highlight the concept of this cell subtype as a plastic entity that has a dynamic status and can be originated from different types of cells through genetic and epigenetic *** alterations are modulated by complex and dynamic crosstalk with environmental factors by paracrine *** is known that in the tumor niche,different cell types,structures,and biomolecules coexist and interact with cancer cells favoring cancer growth and ***,these components constitute the tumor microenvironment(TME).Most recently,researchers have also deepened the influence of the complex variety of microorganisms that inhabit the intestinal mucosa,collectively known as gut microbiota,on *** TME and microorganisms participate in inflammatory processes that can drive the initiation and evolution of *** in the last decade,crucial advances have been made concerning to the synergistic interaction among the TME and gut microorganisms that condition the identity of CCSC,the data exposed in this review could provide valuable insights into the biology of CRC and the development of new targeted therapies.

Background The nationally determined contribution（NDC） presented by Argentina within the framework of the Paris Agreement is aligned with the decisions made in the context of the United Nations Framework Conven-tion on Climate Change（UNFCCC） on the reduction of emissions derived from deforestation and forest degradation, as well as forest carbon conservation（REDD+）. In addition, climate change constitutes one of the greatest threats to forest biodiversity and ecosystem services. However, the soil organic carbon（SOC） stocks of native forests have not been incorporated into the Forest Reference Emission Levels calculations and for conservation planning under cli-mate variability due to a lack of information. The objectives of this study were:（i） to model SOC stocks to 30 cm of native forests at a national scale using climatic, topographic and vegetation as predictor variables, and（ii） to relate SOC stocks with spatial–temporal remotely sensed indices to determine biodiversity conservation concerns due to threats from high inter-annual climate *** We used 1040 forest soil samples（0–30 cm） to generate spatially explicit estimates of SOC native forests in Argentina at a spatial resolution of approximately 200 m. We selected 52 potential predictive environmental covari-ates, which represent key factors for the spatial distribution of SOC. All covariate maps were uploaded to the Google Earth Engine cloud-based computing platform for subsequent modelling. To determine the biodiversity threats from high inter-annual climate variability, we employed the spatial–temporal satellite-derived indices based on Enhanced Vegetation Index（EVI） and land surface temperature（LST） images from Landsat *** SOC model（0–30 cm depth） prediction accounted for 69% of the variation of this soil property across the whole native forest coverage in Argentina. Ensemble and single particle studies of the excitation power density (P)-dependent upconversion luminescence (UCL) of core and core-shell β-NayF_(4):yb,Er upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) doped with 20% yb^(3+) and 1% or 3% Er^(^(3+)) performed over a P regime of 6 orders of magnitude reveal an increasing contribution of the emission from high energy Er^(3+) levels at P > 1 kW/cm^(2). This changes the overall emission color from initially green over yellow to white. While initially the green and with increasing P the red emission dominate in ensemble measurements at P y levels by multiphotonic processes at higher P in single particle studies results in a multitude of emission bands in the ultraviolet/visible/near infrared (UV/vis/NIR) accompanied by a decreased contribution of the red luminescence. Based upon a thorough analysis of the P-dependence of UCL, the emission bands activated at high P were grouped and assigned to 2–3, 3–4, and 4 photonic processes involving energy transfer (ET), excited-state absorption (ESA), cross-relaxation (CR), back energy transfer (BET), and non-radiative relaxation processes (nRP). This underlines the P-tunability of UCNP brightness and color and highlights the potential of P-dependent measurements for mechanistic studies required to manifest the population pathways of the different Er^(3+) levels.

The hydraulic fracturing is a nonlinear,fluid-solid coupling and transient problem,in most cases it is always time-consuming to simulate this process *** recent years,although many numerical methods were proposed to settle this problem,most of them still require a large amount of computer *** it is a high demand to develop more efficient numerical approaches to achieve the real-time monitoring of the fracture geometry during the hydraulic fracturing *** this study,a reduced order modeling technique namely Proper Generalized Decomposition(PGD),is applied to accelerate the simulations of the transient,non-linear coupled system of hydraulic fracturing problem,to match this extremely tight response time *** separability of the solution in space and time dimensions is studied for a simplified model *** solid and fluid equations are coupled explicitly by inverting the solid discrete problem,and a simple iterative procedure to handle the non-linear characteristic of the hydraulic fracturing problem is proposed in this *** validation illustrates that the results of PGD match well with these of standard finite element method in terms o f fracture opening and fluid pressure in the ***,after the off-line calculations,the numerical results can be obtained in real time.

Symbiotic interactions as drivers of trade-offs in plants: effects of fungal endophytes on tall fescue

Studying the controls on biomass allocation trade-offs in plants are important since they affect harvestable product yields and are critical to understanding symbiotic *** fungal endophytes associate with cool-season grasses,growing systemically within the plant inter-cellular spaces and are transmitted through *** explore the endophytes influence on the relationship between the plant reproductive and vegetative aboveground biomass(reproductive effort:RE)and on the trade-off between two components of the reproductive biomass,number and weight of panicles(RPN),using tall fescue as a model *** endophyte-colonized,manipulatively endophyte-free,and naturally endophyte-free plants from Northern European wild-populations together with the cultivar Kentucky-31 were grown under different environmental conditions(nutrients x water).The endophyte had an effect on the RPN(E+:6.19,ME-:4.68 and E-:4.40)which indicates how reproductive biomass is partitioned into number and mass of panicles,but not on RE(≈0.06).As expected,wild plants showed higher reproductive effort(≈0.06)compared to the cultivar Ky-31(0.05),irrespective of endophyte ***-colonized plants had lighter panicles than endophyte-free plants,a pattern that was clear among low-yielding ***,the tradeoff between RPN and RE was higher for endophytecolonized *** was again evident among plants with low RE indicating that colonized plants split the yield into either greater number of panicles and/or lighter *** effect of vertically transmitted endophytes has earlier been studied as ratios(***);however,our study shows that this approach may hide size-dependent endophyte effects on these *** study reveals that Neotyphodium endophyte affects trade-offs in tall fescue plants in a complex manner,and is influenced by a number of biological and abiotic factors.

Nucleation and Growth Mechanisms for Pd-Pt Bimetallic Nanodendrites and Their Electrocatalytic Properties

In a seed-mediated synthesis, nanocrystal growth is often described by assuming the absence of homogeneous nucleation in the solution. Here we provide new insights into the nucleation and growth mechanisms underlying the formation of bimetallic nanodendrites that are characterized by a dense array of Pt branches anchored to a Pd nanocrystal core. These nanostructures can be easily prepared by a one-step, seeded growth method that involves the reduction of K2PtCl4 by L-ascorbic acid in the presence of 9-nm truncated octahedral Pd seeds in an aqueous solution. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM analyses revealed that both homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation of Pt occurred at the very early stages of the synthesis and the Pt branches grew through oriented attachment of small Pt particles that had been formed via homogeneous nucleation. These new findings contradict the generally accepted mechanism for seeded growth that only involves heterogeneous nucleation and simple growth via atomic addition. We have also investigated the electrocatalytic properties of the Pd-Pt nanodendrites for the oxygen reduction and formic acid oxidation reactions by conducting a comparative study with foam-like Pt nanostructures prepared in the absence of Pd seeds under otherwise identical conditions.

Phosphorus fractions and sorption dynamics in the sediments of two Ca-SO4 water reservoirs in the central Argentine Andes

Phosphorus（P） fractionation and sorption behavior were studied in the sediments of two calcium-sulfate(Ca-SO4: Ca2+170 mg L-1; SO42-400 mg L-1) water reservoirs in the southern central Argentine Andes-El Carrizal Reservoir（ECR）,which stratifies in summer and El Nihuil Reservoir（ENR）,which is vertically mixed throughout the year. Sediment size classes reflected the lithology of both basins and the reservoirs relative location: ECR（downstream from a valley adjacent to a mountain environment） had higher clay proportions while the sand fraction was more important in ENR（just next to a mountain environment）.In both reservoirs, the chemical composition revealed low alteration and calcium enrichment. Total P content was relatively high(1.1-1.6 mg P kg-1dry weight) as expected from the contribution of marine formations. P fractionation was dominated by Ca-P（ECR, 69% and ENR, 63%） followed by organic-P（23%）in summer-anoxic ECR and by iron/aluminum（Fe/Al）-P（27%） in oxic ENR. Batch experiments showed that sorption behavior in ECR had a typical Langmuir isotherm plot while in ENR that model fitted only at low dissolved P values(ynamics in reservoir sediments in arid central western Argentina, where water sulfate concentrations are naturally high due to basin lithology.

Despite international efforts to limit worker exposure to coal dust,it continues to impact the health of thousands of miners across *** coal dust has been studied to improve risk models and its control to protect *** size distribution analyses shows that using spraying systems to suppress airborne dusts can reduce particulate matter concentrations and that coals with higher ash yields produce finer *** are marked chemical differences between parent coals and relatively coarse deposited dusts(up to _(500)μm,DD_(500)).Enrichments in Ca,K,Ba,Se,Pb,Cr,Mo,Ni and especially As,Sn,Cu,Zn and Sb in the finest respirable dust fractions could originate from:(i)mechanical machinery wear;(ii)variations in coal mineralogy;(iii)coal fly ash used in shotcrete,and carbonates used to reduce the risk of *** enrichments in Ca in mine dusts are attributed to the use of such concrete,and elevated K to raised levels of phyllosilicate mineral *** concentrations are higher in the parent coal than in the DD_(500),probably due to relatively lower levels of organic *** concentrations of all elements observed in this study remained below occupational exposure limits.
