This thorough review explores the complexities of geotechnical engineering, emphasizing soil-structure interaction (ssI). The investigation centers on sheet pile design, examining two primary methodologies: Limit Equilibrium Methods (LEM) and soil-structure Interaction Methods (ssIM). While LEM methods, grounded in classical principles, provide valuable insights for preliminary design considerations, they may encounter limitations in addressing real-world complexities. In contrast, ssIM methods, including the ssI-sR approach, introduce precision and depth to the field. By employing numerical techniques such as Finite Element (FE) and Finite Difference (FD) analyses, these methods enable engineers to navigate the dynamics of soil-structure interaction. The exploration extends to ssI-FE, highlighting its essential role in civil engineering. By integrating Finite Element analysis with considerations for soil-structure interaction, the ssI-FE method offers a holistic understanding of how structures dynamically interact with their geotechnical environment. Throughout this exploration, the study dissects critical components governing ssIM methods, providing engineers with tools to navigate the intricate landscape of geotechnical design. The study acknowledges the significance of the Mohr-Coulomb constitutive model while recognizing its limitations, and guiding practitioners toward informed decision-making in geotechnical analyses. As the article concludes, it underscores the importance of continuous learning and innovation for the future of geotechnical engineering. With advancing technology and an evolving understanding of soil-structure interaction, the study remains committed to ensuring the safety, stability, and efficiency of geotechnical structures through cutting-edge design and analysis techniques.

Advanced sheet Pile Curtain Design: Case study of Cotonou East Corniche

Influence of pH on Water Hyacinth Ponds Treating and Recycling Wastewater

This work has examined the effects of pH on the treatment efficiency and biomass production rate of water hyacinth ponds (WHP) treating domestic wastewater. Experiments were carried out outdoor in WHP, working under batch and subtropical environmental conditions, using pre-treated sewage with pH varying from 5 to 9. It was observed that the plants regulated the pH of the medium to within 6.4 to 7.1 during the treatment processes independently of influent wastewater pH ranges. This adjustment reduced the treatment performances and the biomass production in ponds, the alkaline conditions in ponds being less favorable to the activities of the plants. The optimal removal and biomass production was achieved with influent pH of 7 lying in the above interval. so the optimum influent pH for the growth of plants and the removal of nutrients and organic matters in WHP is within pH 6.4 to pH 7.1.

Poor wastewater management coupled with lack of sanitation facilities has aggravated the sanitation challenges in developing countries.?This study was aimed at providing information on the current state of sanitation in Cotonou City through surveys. The most common sanitation facilities in the city were septic tanks, latrines and soakaway pits. Mechanical desulging was mainly used (94%) for desludging latrines and septic tanks with a frequency of less than once a year for 73% of the houses;manual desludging was most common for soakaway pits. 84% of sullage generated is disposed without treatment. The only existing stabilization pond plant, managed by a private company sIBEAU, is overloaded;the effluent is poor (up to 2250mg/l BOD5) and does not meet any quality standards. 96% of survey respondents recognise that the sanitation situation in the city is not good;it has to be improved by providing an appropriate and sustainable sanitation management system.

Influence of salinity on Duckweed Growth and Duckweed Based Wastewater Treatment system

The growth of duckweed (spirodela polyrrhiza) was investigated in an outdoor batch system under 15 different conductivities ranging from 200 μs/cm to 3000 μs/cm with average 110 μmol/m2 daylight intensity. The growth was performed in an anaerobically treated domestic wastewater using an initial plants population of 50 fronds. Increase in Relative Growth Rate—RGR—(in terms of fresh weight and number of fronds) had a significant non-linear (polynomial) relationship with the conductivity. The maximum RGR related to fresh weight of 0.176 was observed at the conductiviity of 1200 μs/cm while the maximum RGR related to fronds number was 0.193 at the conductivity of 800 μs/cm. The optimum range for duckweeds growth was found to be between conductivities of 600 μs/cm and 1400 μs/cm. The maximal rates of removal of COD of 14.5 mg/day, of 0.65 mg/day, NTK of 15.68 mg/day, faecal coliforms of 100% and turbidity of 80.8% were observed in this range. The COD and PO42- removal rates were highly correlated to the growth rate, with the correlation factor of up to 0.783 and, then to the conductivity. The NTK reduction was positively related to the conductivity.

Numerical Modeling of the Behaviour of a Road structure on Compressible soil: Case of the Road section at the Beau-Rivage-Djassin Intersection

This document presents a study of the behaviour of a pavement structure on compressible soil and the evaluation of its durability. The objective of this study is to highlight the impact of taking into account the non-linear elastic behaviour of soils and granular materials in the design process. To this end, a numerical modelling of the pavement of the beau-rivage-Djassin crossroads section in Porto-Novo was carried out, based on a compressible soil whose behaviour will be considered elastoplastic. The subgrade soil on the section is made up of several sub-layers. The layer of soft, highly plastic clay was modelled according to a modified Cam Clay behaviour, a model of swelling clay soils. The fine sand layer and the granular layers of the structure are modelled according to Mohr-Coulomb behaviour. The loading is considered to be uniformly distributed according to the assumptions of the Burmister model in the French standard. A first verification with ALIZE allowed to validate the structure on the basis of the rutting deformation at the head of the platform εsub>zsub> = 359.6*10sup>-6sup> which remains lower than the admissible deformation εsub>zsub>sub>,admsub> = 360*10sup>-6sup>. The numerical calculation was carried out using the finite element method, the code of which is implemented under the PLAXIs v21 software. A comparative study with the results of the ALIZE design revealed that the numerically calculated strains εsub>zsub> = 585*10sup>-6sup> are higher than those of ALIZE. These numerical strains, which are higher than the elastic strains, do not meet the validation criteria that the strains under loading must remain below the allowable strains. An evaluation of the pavement durability was carried out and it was found that the pavement would only last under traffic for 3 years before the first fatigue deformations appeared.

since many years ago, the substitution of cement by other cementitious supplementary elements has being a purpose for many researchers. This is to reduce the impact of producing cement on our environment. In this article, we are interested in the possibility of substituting cement with titanium dioxide and titanium dioxide + fly ash. To achieve this purpose, we have manufactured mortars and cement pastes specimens with different rates of replacement of cement by titanium dioxide (0%, 0.1%, 1%) on the one hand and titanium dioxide + fly ash on the overhand. The flexural and compressive strength of each specimen has been determined.

Carbon nanotubes and Resistance to Freeze-Thaw Cycles

The research of materials with good properties is one of the important concerns of scientists groups, and more again in region where materials are subjected to freeze and thaw cycles. In the case of this paper, it has been a matter of evaluating of the effect of carbon nanotubes on concrete resistance to freeze and thaw cycles. Thus, it has been manufactured concretes with different rates of addition (0%, 0.1%, 0.5%, 1% bwc) of cement by carbon nanotubes. The durability factor, determined for C30 specimens at 28 days, shows that C005 provides a better resistance to freezing-thawing cycles with a 54.96 as index.
