Organic photovoltaics for simultaneous energy harvesting and high-speed MIMO optical wireless communications

We show that organic photovoltaics(OPVs)are suitable for high-speed optical wireless data receivers that can also harvest *** addition,these OPVs are of particular interest for indoor applications,as their bandgap is larger than that of silicon,leading to better matching to the spectrum of artificial *** selecting a suitable combination of a narrow bandgap donor polymer and a nonfullerene acceptor,stable OPVs are fabricated with a power conversion efficiency of 8.8%under 1 Sun and 14%under indoor lighting *** an optical wireless communication experiment,a data rate of 363 Mb/s and a simultaneous harvested power of 10.9 mW are achieved in a 4-by-4 multipleinput multiple-output(MIMO)setup that consists of four laser diodes,each transmitting 56 mW optical power and four OPV cells on a single panel as receivers at a distance of 40 *** result is the highest reported data rate using OPVs as data receivers and energy *** finding may be relevant to future mobile communication applications because it enables enhanced wireless data communication performance while prolonging the battery life in a mobile device.

Recurrent Transient Osteoporosis during Pregnancy and Treatment with Oral Bisphosphonates: A Case Report

Transient osteoporosis of the hip (TOH), also known as “Bone marrow edema Syndrome”, is a rare disorder mainly affecting pregnant women in their third trimester, as well as middle-aged, overweight men. A 30-year-old Caucasian female G2P2, with history of transient osteoporosis of both ankles and C-Section during the last pregnancy in 2011, presented progressively severe bilateral hip pain with onset already in the 12th gestational week. Imaging of the pelvis and bilateral hips with MRI obtained 6 days after the C-Section demonstrated bilateral bone-marrow edema of the hips. The patient was treated with a monthly single dose of 150 mg ibandronate acid per os, for 3 months and physiotherapy. Repeated MRI performed 5 months postpartum revealed a complete remission of the disease. In contrast to the first onset of transient osteoporosis during the first pregnancy, which was only treated conservatively without bisphosphonates, the remission of the disease and patient’s recovery with oral ibandronate therapy showed to be 4 months shorter. This case is unique in literature for both describing the onset of this rare disease twice in the same patient as well as its oral therapeutic approach.

In this paper we consider the numerical method of characteristics for the numerical solution of initial value problems (IVPs) for quasilinear hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations, as well as the difference scheme Central Time Central Space (CTCS), Crank-Nicolson scheme, ω scheme and the method of characteristics for the numerical solution of initial and boundary value prob-lems for the one-dimension homogeneous wave equation. The initial deriva-tive condition is approximated by different second order difference quotients in order to examine which gives more accurate numerical results. The local truncation error, consistency and stability of the difference schemes CTCS, Crank-Nicolson and ω are also considered.

Specific structural features of LnZrOx(Ln:La, Sm) mixed oxides prepared by different methods

LnZrOx(Ln: La, Sm) mixed oxides of Ln: Zr = 1 were prepared by different methods(complex polymerized method, sorption of cations on starch from aqueous salt solution and conventional co-precipitation with additional redispersion of precipitate by ultra sound) and calcined at 700–1300 °C. Their specific structural features and changes were studied and discussed. Various characterization methods were used such as X-ray diffraction,Electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared and Raman spectroscopy, UV–Vis spectroscopy, X-Ray absorption fine structure and X-ray photoelectron *** formation of pyrochlore structure occurred at 1100–1300 °C from fluorite-like pseudocubic phase ZrO2regardless the method of preparation. This phase had a block-like structure consisting of ZrO2nanocrystals stabilized by Ln cations and residual anions such as hydroxyls and carbonates. The desorption of such anions with heating already started at 900 °C and lead to local changes of Zr cations coordination to octahedral and to the formation of pyrochlore nanodomains inclusions within fluorite-like phase. The increased cation mobility and further elimination of anions caused by further heating was accompanied by the formation of bulk pyrochlore phase at 1100–1300 °C. Even after calcination at 1300 °C the local microheterogeneity as well as defects were identified at domains boundaries or sintered microstructure. These specific features of the formed pyrochlores depend on the method of preparation.

Abscess of the spleen is a rare discovery, with about 600 cases in the international literature so far. Although it may have various causes, it is most usually associated with trauma and infections of the spleen. The latter are more common in the presence of a different primary site of infection, especially endocarditis or in cases of ischemic infarcts that are secondarily infected. Moreover, immunosuppression is a major risk factor. Clinical examination usually reveals a combination of fever, left-upper-quadrant abdominal pain and vomiting. Laboratory findings are not constant. Imaging is a necessary tool for establishing the diagnosis, with a choice between ultrasound and computed tomography. Treatment includes conservative measures, and surgical intervention. In children and in cases of solitary abscesses with a thick wall, percutaneous catheter drainage may be attempted. Otherwise, splenectomy is the preferred approach in most centers. Here, we present three cases of splenic abscess. In all three, splenectomy was performed, followed by rapid clinical improvement. These cases emphasize that current understanding of spleen abscess etiology is still limited, and a study for additional risk factors may be necessary.

The Recurrence Rate in Meningiomas: Analysis of Tumor Location, Histological Grading, and Extent of Resection

Background: Purpose of this study was to evaluate various parameters of meningioma after surgical treatment and analyze predictive factors for recurrence. Methods: During 1992-2007, 353 patients were operated for intracranial meningioma in our department. They were followed since, and related data were combined with parameters such as tumor histology (WHO system), tumor location and the extent of tumor resection (Simpson’s scale). The results were analyzed with respect to tumor reappearance. This study was approved by the ethics committee of G. Papanikolaou Hospital. Results: The mean follow up period was 6.45 years. The overall percentage of recurrence was 21.52%. Grade 1 meningiomas (benign) recurred at a rate of 19.1%, grade 2 tumors (atypical) showed 41.7% rate of recurrence and grade 3 meningiomas (malignant) recurred at a rate of 75%. Tumor histopathology was not significant to recurrence (p > 0.001). The location of meningiomas was not found to be significant to recurrence (p > 0.001). Complete tumor resection was accomplished in 269 patients (76.2%). Incomplete resection (Simpson grades 2-5) took place in 84 cases (23.8%). The recurrence rate after complete resection was 13.8%, while the rate for cases with incomplete resection was 46.7%. The extent of removal was significantly associated with recurrence (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Tumor recurrence was observed at 21.5% of patients in our series of intracranial meningioma surgery. The rate of recurrence was related primarily to the extent of surgical removal. Neither tumor site, nor tumor histology were predictive factors for recurrence (ma-lignant meningiomas excluded).

Morton’s Neuroma is a common metatarsalgia in athletes created due to the entrapment of the inter-digital nerve inside the transverse inter-metatarsal ligament. The purpose of the present study is to draw the necessary conclusions from the use of a particular surgical treatment to release the digital nerve, accompanied by neurolysis in adults who exercise. On the whole, twenty five patients with twenty-five suffering extremities were treated. Five of them simultaneously had a Hallux Valgus type deformity and that supports the belief of the mechanical induce of this condition. Both ultrasonography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) were used for the clinical evaluation of this condition. The pain was estimated via the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). The patients were re-examined after three (1st postoperative), twelve (2nd postoperative) and twenty-four (3rd postoperative) months. A significant improvement (p 0.0001) was noticed from the correlation between the pain before the surgery and the pain after the surgery via the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Most patients (15/25) did not display any discomfort or sensory disorder after surgery. The correct clinical evaluation as well as the correct and effective surgical intervention with the simultaneous repair of all the mechanical deformities of the foot provided better post-surgery progress in patients and increased the percentage of their rehabilitation of their previous activities.

The spin Hall effect,a key enabler in the field of spintronics,underlies the capability to control spin currents over macroscopic *** effect was initially predicted by D'Yakonov and Perel1 and has been recently brought to the foreground by its realization in paramagnetic metals by Hirsch2 and in semiconductors3 by Sih et *** the rapid dephasing of electrons poses severe limitations to the manipulation of macroscopic spin currents,the concept of replacing fermionic charges with neutral bosons such as photons in stratified media has brought some tangible advances in terms of comparatively lossless propagation and ease of detection4–*** advances have led to several manifestations of the spin Hall effect with light,ranging from semiconductor microcavities8,9 to *** date the observations have been limited to built-in effective magnetic fields that underpin the formation of spatial spin *** we demonstrate external control of spin currents by modulating the splitting between transverse electric and magnetic fields in liquid crystals integrated in microcavities.
