Background The savannah ecosystems of Sahel have experienced continuous and heavy grazing of livestock for centuries but still,their vegetation response to grazing pressure remains poorly *** this study,we analysed the herbaceous plant dynamics,measured by species diversity,composition,cover,and biomass in response to grazing pressure in the savannah ecosystems of *** Senegal,we selected four savannah sites represented with high,moderate,light and no grazing intensity *** survey methods were used for sampling the vegetation data within each of the *** richness and composition were analysed using species accumulation curve and multivariate ***,we used General Linear Models and a piecewise Structural Equation Model(pSEM)to examine the relationships between grazing intensity,vegetation cover,diversity and *** The herbaceous species diversity and composition varied significantly among the different grazing intensity levels(p<0.001).The plant species composition shifted from the dominance of grass cover to the dominance of forb cover with increasing grazing ***,the attributes of species diversity,herbaceous biomass,and ground cover were higher on sites with low grazing than sites with high and moderate grazing *** all sites,species diversity was positively related to total *** pSEM explained 37%of the variance in total biomass and revealed that grazing intensity negatively influenced total biomass both directly and indirectly through its negative influence on species *** Managing grazing intensity may lead to higher plant production and higher mixed forage establishment in the dryland savannah *** information can be used to support land management strategies and promote sustainable grazing practices that balance the needs of livestock with the conservation of ecosystem health and biodiversity.

Development and assessment of artificial neural network models for direct normal solar irradiance forecasting using operational numerical weather prediction data

Accurate operational solar irradiance forecasts are crucial for better decision making by solar energy system operators due to the variability of resource and energy *** numerical weather prediction(NWP)models can forecast solar radiation variables,they often have significant errors,particularly in the direct normal irradiance(DNI),which is especially affected by the type and concentration of aerosols and *** paper presents a method based on artificial neural networks(ANN)for generating operational DNI forecasts using weather and aerosol forecasts from the European Center for Medium-range Weather Forecasts(ECMWF)and the Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service(CAMS),*** ANN models were designed:one uses as input the predicted weather and aerosol variables for a given instant,while the other uses a period of the improved DNI forecasts before the forecasted *** models were developed using observations for the location of´Evora,Portugal,resulting in 10 min DNI forecasts that for day 1 of forecast horizon showed an improvement over the downscaled original forecasts regarding R2,MAE and RMSE of 0.0646,21.1 W/m^(2)and 27.9 W/m^(2),*** model was also evaluated for different timesteps and locations in southern Portugal,providing good agreement with experimental data.

Antioxidants Enzymes Activities and NO Levels in Hemodialysis and Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis—A Comparative Study

It consists of a retrospective study with twenty-two individuals diagnosed with DRC: fourteen HD and eight CAPD, followed up in the dialysis center of Antonio Pedro University Hospital (HUAP) of Fluminense Federal University (UFF), between 2015 and 2017. Fifteen healthy control (HC) subjects were included, without diagnosed CKD. Patients with HIV positive, hepatitis A, B, and C, pregnant, cancer, smokers, alcoholics and those exposed to X-rays in the last 3 months, were excluded. Objectives: As oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction may be linked to the higher prevalence of CVD in CKD patients, we measured the activities of the antioxidants enzymes: SOD and GPx and total NO levels in the plasma and serum of end-stage CKD patients undergoing dialysis therapy, comparing with the HC group. Methods: Quantification of NO levels was performed by fluorometric kit, while activities of SOD and GPx were determined using kinetic methods. Results: We found higher plasma SOD activity in HD (8.58 U/ml) and CAPD (10.14 U/ml), compared to C (3.73 U/ml) group, while GPx activity was decreased in HD (115.38 nmol/h/ml) and CAPD (122.76 nmol/h/ml) groups compared to HC group (275.83 nmol/h/ml). Total serum NO concentration was decreased in HD (14.09 pmol/μl) and CAPD (10.26 pmol/μl), compared to non-CKD patients (49.65 pmol/μl). Conclusion: Decreased total serum NO and GPx activities may lead to endothelial dysfunction and consequently a higher prevalence of CVD in CKD patients.

Extreme drought events are expected to be one of the main challenges for tropical agriculture and,consequently,for global food *** this reason,it is urgent to develop strategies to increase water use efficiency,as well as to increase crops’ ability to cope with *** rare earth elements(REEs) are known to alleviate damages in plants under abiotic stresses,we hypothesized that addition of Ce^3+to nutrient solution would promote the growth of common bean,especially under simulated drought *** test this hypothesis,we conducted an experiment evaluating the effect of six Ce^3+concentrations on the development and physiological traits of common bean grown in nutrient solution under normal condition and under induced drought stress,caused by the addition of polyethylene glycol6000 to the nutrient *** results show that Ce^3+alleviates water stress in common bean plants,increasing their survival rate and *** addition,Ce^3+application increases photosynthesis rate,chlorophyll content and water use efficiency under water ***,we observe no significant effect of Ce^3+on plants growing under normal ***,Ce3+seems to be a promising attenuator of drought stress for common bean.

A novel and rapid microbiological assay for ciprofoxacin hydrochloride

The present work reports a simple, fast and sensitive microbiological assay applying the turbidimetric method for the determination of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride （CIPRO HC1） in ophthalmic solutions. The validation method yielded good results and included excellent linearity, precision, accuracy and specificity. The bioassay is based on the inhibitory effect of CIPRO HC1 upon the strain of Staphylococcus epMermidis ATCC 12228 used as the test microorganism. The results were ar, ated statistically by analysis of variance （ANOVA） and were found to be linear （r=0.9994, in the range of 14.0-56.0 lag/mL）, precise （intraday RSD %=2.06; interday RSD%=2.30） and accurate （recovery = 99.7%）. The turbidimeaic assay was compared to the UV spectrophotometric and I-IPIX2 methods for the same drug. The tuIbidimetric bioassay described on this paper for determination of ciprofioxacin hydrochloride in ophthalmic solution is an alternative to the physicochemical methods disclosed in the literature and can be used in quality control routine.

Tenure of Urban Land： Structure, Form and Transformation in Ribeirao Preto, Brazil

The purpose of this study is to explore the urban morphological aspects of cities governed by the juridical regime of emphyteusis, a recurrent situation in the northeastern part of the state of Silo paulo, Brazil, with special attention to the city of Ribeirao Preto. The concession of lands to the Catholic Church was a recurring practice in Brazil during the colonial and imperial periods, when the cities were being established. As these lands were intended for the formation of patrimonial goods to show the devotion of the residents to a Catholic saint, the lands were not allowed to be commercialized. The tenure reveals a relation in which there is an owner--the landlord--who has direct control of the urban land. This owner allows another--the leaseholder--the useful domain of the land, thus giving the latter the right to use the land, the obligation to pay an annual tax and the responsibility to give the owner a percentage of the sales generated from the land. In 1845, farmers donated a tract of land to be used to glorify Silo Sebastiao. This land is now the city of Ribeirao Preto, and it is this conjuncture that defined the structure and the transformation of the original urban form of the current city.

Systematized Literature Review on Spatial Analysis of Environmental Risk Factors of Malaria Transmission

Malaria is still the major parasitic disease in the world, with approximately 438,000 deaths in 2015. Environmental risk factors (ERF) have been widely studied, however, there are discrepancies in the results about their influence on malaria transmission. Recently, papers have been published about geospatial analysis of ERF of malaria to explain why malaria varies from place to place. Our primary objective was to identify the environmental variables most used in the geospatial analysis of malaria transmission. The secondary objective was to identify the geo-analytic methods and techniques, as well as geo-analytic statistics commonly related to ERF and malaria. We conducted a systematized review of articles published from January 2004 to March 2015, within Web of Science, Pubmed and LILACS databases. Initially 676 articles were found, after inclusion and exclusion criteria, 29 manuscripts were selected. Temperature, land use and land cover, surface moisture and vector breeding site were the most frequent included variables. As for geo-analytic methods, geostatistical models with Bayesian framework were the most applied. Kriging interpolations, Geographical Weighted Regression as well as Kulldorff’s spatial scan were the techniques more widely used. The main objective of many of these studies was to use these methods and techniques to create malaria risk maps. Spatial analysis performed with satellite images and georeferenced data are increasing in relevance due to the use of remote sensing and Geographic Information System. The combination of these new technologies identifies ERF more accurately, and the use of Bayesian geostatistical models allows a wide diffusion of malaria risk maps. It is known that temperature, humidity vegetation and vector breeding site play a critical role in malaria transmission;however, other environmental risk factors have also been identified. Risk maps have a tremendous potential to enhance the effectiveness of malaria-control programs.

AIM:To compare the performance of different types of abdominal drains used in bariatric ***:A vertical banded Roux-en-Y gastric bypass was performed in 33 morbidly obese *** of the peritoneal cavity was performed in each case using three different types of drain selected in a randomized manner:a latex tubular drain,a Watterman tubulolaminar drain,and a silicone channeled *** permeability,contamination of the drained fluid,ease of handling,and patient discomfort were evaluated postoperatively over a period of 7 ***:The patients with the silicone channeled drain had larger volumes of drainage compared to patients with tubular and tubulolaminar drains between the third and seventh postoperative *** addition,a lower incidence of discomfort and of contamination with bacteria of a more pathogenic profile was observed in the patients with the silicone channeled ***:The silicone channeled drain was more comfortable and had less chance of occlusion,which is important in the detection of delayed dehiscence.

Epidemiological Profile of Breast Neoplasia in the Municipality of Valença (RJ Brazil): Study from 2009 to 2017

Breast neoplasms are the main oncological pathology in Gynecology and Obstetrics, with increasing rates of incidence and mortality in the female population. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 1 million new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed worldwide every year. This study aims to understand and analyze the epidemiological profile of patients diagnosed with breast cancer in the last nine years in the city of Valença—RJ, Brazil. A descriptive, documentary-retrospective analysis was carried out from January 2009 to December 2017, on 96 records of women who underwent breast biopsy at the Escola Escola de Valença (HEV), referred by the HEV Gynecology outpatient clinic. The results compared the variables age, race, parity, alcoholism, smoking, comorbidities, histological type, family history and screening performed with the scenario of breast cancer in the world, concluding that it is essential to identify patients at risk development of breast cancer to guide prevention, screening and early detection of pathology. The cases in the municipality are similar to other studies in relation to smoking, alcohol consumption, associated comorbidities, histological type and family history. However, the prevalence in younger people stands out, as well as the high percentage of women who have not had previous screening, which highlights the importance of the development and spread of women’s health in this city in the south of the state.

Phylogeny of Bacteria from Steelmaking Wastes and Their Acidic Enrichment Cultures

Currently, millions of tons of steel are produced worldwide. This has become a serious economic and environmental challenge because the ores used for steel production are nonrenewable resources and the production generates huge amount of waste. In this study, we identified and investigated the ability of bacteria from steelmaking waste with low and high zinc concentration to promote leaching of zinc, when enriched by acidic (pH 2) culture conditions. The bioleaching assays indicated removal of Zn, as in chemical leaching. Bacterial communities from crude and enrichment culture wastes were characterized by the 16S rRNA gene. Phylogenetic analysis of the generated clone libraries revealed predominance of Proteobacteria and Firmicutes. The Actino- bacteria, Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria, and Deinococcus-Thermus phyla were also encountered. The clones were most closely related to cultivable heterotrophic bacteria. Different genera were identified including iron redox cycling and leaching bacteria such as Chromobacterium, Aeromonas, Escherichia, Bacillus, and Ochrobactrum. These data add significant new information on bacteria which survive in extremely acidic conditions. They are distantly related to typical acidophiles responsible for the leaching process, which makes them good candidates for future studies on metal bioleaching.
