Evolutionary Learning of Concepts

Concept learning is a kind of classification task that has interesting practical applications in several areas. In this paper, a new evolutionary concept learning algorithm is proposed and a corresponding learning system, called ECL (Evolutionary Concept Learner), is implemented. This system is compared to three traditional learning systems: MLP (Multilayer Perceptron), ID3 (Iterative Dichotomiser) and NB (Naïve Bayes). The comparison takes into account target concepts of varying complexities (e.g., with interacting attributes) and different qualities of training sets (e.g., with imbalanced classes and noisy class labels). The comparison results show that, although no single system is the best in all situations, the proposed system ECL has a very good overall performance.

Dealing with Empty and Overabundant Answers to Flexible Queries

In traditional database applications, queries intend to retrieve data satisfying precise conditions. As a result, thousands of data can be retrieved (overabundant answer) or, even worse, no data at all (empty answer). In both cases, the queries must be reformulated to produce more significant results and, typically, many related queries are submitted by a user before he can be finally satisfied. To overcome these problems, this paper proposes a unified solution in the framework of flexible queries with fuzzy semantics. This solution, based on the concept of semantic proximity and implemented in a tool for flexible query answering, allows the automatic reformulation of queries with empty or overabundant answers.

Automatic Risk Identification in Software Projects:an Approach based on Inductive Learning

Effective risk management is very important to increase the probability of success in software projects. Indeed, like other types of projects, software projects are also susceptible to various problems that can lead to the cancelation of their development or to the development of systems that do not meet the client’s requirements. One of the main active- ties of risk management is the risk identification, because the list of risks generated in this activity is used all along the risk control process. Thus, this work proposes the creation of an expert system which is capable of identifying risks in software projects by using the lessons inductively learned from similar software projects already developed. By using this proposed expert system, project managers and software developers must be able to avoid errors of the past.

A Dialogue System for Coherent Reasoning with Inconsistent Knowledge Bases

Traditionally, the AI community assumes that a knowledge base must be consistent. Despite that, there are many applications where, due to the existence of rules with exceptions, inconsistent knowledge must be considered. One way of restoring consistency is to withdraw conflicting rules;however, this will destroy part of the knowledge. Indeed, a better alternative would be to give precedence to exceptions. This paper proposes a dialogue system for coherent reasoning with inconsistent knowledge, which resolves conflicts by using precedence relations of three kinds: explicit precedence relation, which is synthesized from precedence rules;implicit precedence relation, which is synthesized from defeasible rules;mixed precedence relation, which is synthesized by combining explicit and implicit precedence relations.

Columnar joints in the Patino Formation sandstones, Eastern Paraguay： a dynamic interaction between dyke intrusion, quartz dissolution and cooling-induced fractures

The Patiho Formation sandstones, which crop out in Aregud neighborhood in Eastern Paraguay and show columnar joints near the contact zone with a nephelinite dyke, have as their main characteristics the high pro- portion of syntaxial quartz overgrowth and a porosity originated from different processes, initially by dissolu- tion and later by partial filling and fracturing. Features like the presence of floating grains in the syntaxial cement, the transitional interpenetrative contact between the silica-rich cement and grains as well as the intense fracture porosity are strong indications that the cement has been formed by dissolution and reprecipita- tion of quartz from the framework under the effect of thermal expansion followed by rapid contraction. The increase of the silica-rich cement towards the dyke in association with the orthogonal disposition of the columns relative to dyke walls are indicative that the igneous body may represent the main heat source for the interstitial aqueous solutions previously existing in the sediments. At macroscopic scale, the increasing of inter- nal tensions in the sandstones is responsible for the nucleation of polygons, leading to the individualization of prisms, which are interconnected by a system of joints, formed firstly on isotherm surfaces of low tem- perature and later on successive adjacent planes towards the dyke heat source.
