New approach for obtaining the C-factor of RUSLE considering the seasonal effect of rainfalls on vegetation cover

We present a new approach for calculating the C-factor of RUSLE considering the effect of low-reflectance vegetation cover areas on the reduction of the effects on erosion caused by rainfall *** this,we propose the coefficients Cr2(rescaled 2)and C-PC(Precipitation Correction),which represent the Cfactor,and an adaptation in NDVI calculation,according to the seasonality of precipitation(NDVI-PC).The Cr2 factor is used when there is no seasonal effect of rainfall on vegetation,while the C-PC factor is calculated for localities under the influence of seasonality,from *** proposed approaches were tested using different satellites images in the Palmares-Ribeir~ao do Saco watershed,Rio de Janeiro,*** values of Cr2 and C-PC factors were compared to the Cr factor(rescaled)and to mean values from the literature for different land *** results indicated that the Cr2 factor represents an improvement in accuracy in relation to Cr by considering specific values of the studied area to normalize the data without ***,the C-PC factor is able to simulate the effect of seasonality,providing more realistics values of soil loss by the RUSLE as a function of the proportion of area affected by the rainfall seasonality obtained from *** conclude that both Cr2 and C-PC factors generate values similar of the C-factor observed in the literature,and therefore are able to provide better soil loss estimation than that using the Cr factor.

Improving cover and management factor (C-factor) estimation using remote sensing approaches for tropical regions

The Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE)'s cover and management factor (C-factor) is one of the most difficult factors to obtain,mainly because long-term monitoring soil erosion plots under natural rainfall are ***,remote sensing approaches have been used as an alternative for obtaining this ***,there is a lack of studies comparing values of this factor computed from remote sensing approaches with measured *** this study,we compare two widely used remote sensing approaches (CrA and CVK) to estimate the C-factor based on the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) with the literature (CLIT) and field experimental data..We also investigated the influence of C-factor methods on the prediction of soil loss and sediment yield (SY) using measured data in the Guariroba basin,Central-West *** obtained mean C-factor values of 0.032,0.023 and 0.137 for CLIT,CrA and CVK,*** found an average annual soil loss of 2.20 tha-1 yr-1,2.02 t ha-1 yr-1 and 10.07 tha-1 yr-1 and SY values of 6875 tyr-1,6468 tyr-1 and 33,435 t yr1,for CLIT,CrA and CVK *** results indicated a significant improvement in soil loss and SY estimations by using the CrA approach developed for tropical regions,with a bias of 13% to the measured SY (5709tyr-1).We conclude that the CrA method present the most suitable alternative to compute soil loss and SY in tropical ***,this approach allows large-scale evaluation and temporal monitoring,therefore enhancing multi spatial and temporal assessment of soil erosion processes.

A comparative analysis of three different methods for the estimation of the basic reproduction number of dengue

The basic reproduction number,R0,is defined as the expected number of secondary cases of a disease produced by a single infection in a completely susceptible population,and can be estimated in several *** example,from the stability analysis of a compartmental model;through the use of the matrix of next generation,or from the final size of an epidemic,*** this paper we applied the method for estimating R0 of dengue fever from the initial growth phase of an outbreak,without assuming exponential growth of cases,a common assumption in many *** used three different methods of calculating R0 to compare the techniques'details and to evaluate how these techniques estimate the value of R0 of dengue using data from the city of Ribeir^ao Preto(SE of Brazil)in two *** results of the three methods are numerically different but,when we compare them using a system of differential equations developed for modeling only the first generation time,we can observe that the methods differ little in the initial growth *** conclude that the methods predict that dengue will spread in the city studied and the analysis of the data shows that the estimated values of R0 have an equal pattern overtime.

The B1 dam of Co rrego do Feij～ao Mine, owned by Vale, S.A. mining company and located on the FerroCarv～ao stream, collapsed and injected 2.8 Mm3of clayey, silty, and sandy iron-and manganese-rich tailings into the Paraopeba River(Minas Gerais state, Brazil). The accident occurred on 25 January2019 and the tailings have been co-transported with coarser natural sediment since then, being partly trapped in the Igarape Weir reservoir located on the Paraopeba River nearly 45 km downstream the injection point. The general purpose of the current study was to model suspended sediment transport in the vicinity of the Igarape Weir aiming to assess the concomitant barrier effect imposed by this ***, the spatial distributions of suspended clay, silt, and very fine-grained sand fractions(CSS) of sediment were mapped around the Igarape Weir under low-flow(16 m3/s) and high-flow(5 to 10,000years return period stream discharge; 699—2,699 m3/s) regimes, using RiverFlow2D as the modelling tool. The concentrations of the various grain materials in the upstream and downstream sectors were quantified linking the barrier effect to concentration reductions in the direction of stream flow. It was also a study goal to calculate differences of iron and manganese concentrations in the sediment + tailings mixtures along the Paraopeba River. The study results showed reductions in the CSS between 6.6% and18%, from upstream to downstream of the Igarape Weir, related with backwater effects, free and submerged hydraulic jumps, bank sedimentation in periods of high flow, and streambed sedimentation controlled by channel sinuosity and tailings density. These reductions were accompanied by drops in the concentrations of iron and manganese present in the clay and silt fractions, which varied between 6% and42% under low flows and between 16% and 44% under high flows. Implantosuported Rehabilitation after Marginal Recession of Mandibular Calcifying Epithelial Odontogenic Tumor: Case Report

The Calcifying Epithelial Odontogenic Tumor (CEOT) also called the Pindborg’s Tumor represents a rare benign epithelial odontogenic neoplasm with locally aggressive behavior. Surgical excision with a safety margin is one of the treatment options, requiring bone and soft tissue reconstruction for implant-supported rehabilitation, providing the individual with a return to adequate oral functions. The objective of the present study is to report on the case of the treatment stages and the factors involved in the rehabilitation of a 23-year-old man with a history of mandibular lesion diagnosed as CEOT. A marginal resection of the mandible lesion was performed, with posterior reconstruction with iliac crest bone graft and soft tissue graft to allow the implant-supported rehabilitation. Currently, in the postoperative control, the individual shows no signs of tumor recurrence and is rehabilitated without functional and/or aesthetic complaints. Surgical excision should be framed as a form of treatment, aiming for better resolution in the more complex cases of these invasive tumors.

Exploratory studies developed at several neurosciences laboratories at universities around the world show us through the experience that there is a biological process called neuroplasticity. Because of this oldest concept about the neuronal formation, scientists also thought that if a particular area of the adult brain was damaged, the nerve cells could not form new connections and the functions controlled by this field of the brain would be permanently lost or could not be regenerate. However, studies have overturned this old view, and currently, scientists recognize that the brain continues to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections during the life. This phenomenon is called neuroplasticity that refers to the potential which the brain should be reorganized by creating new neural pathways to adapt, as it needs.

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumour displacing multiple teeth in an adolescent

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor is an unusual benign neoplasm which shares clinical and radiographic characteristics with odontogenic cystic lesions denoting a distinct behavior. This paper reports a case of a 12-year-old boy with a bony consistence tumefaction involving the area from teeth 12 to 17. Radiographically, the lesion was characterized by a well-circum- scribed unilocular radiolucent area displacing maxillary canine, first and second premolars. The final diagnosis was adenomatoid odontogenic tumour. The lesion was enucleated concomitantly with the removal of the canine tooth under general anesthesia. The patient was submitted to orthodontic treatment and has been followed-up for four years. Clinical and radiographic features are discussed in this report.

Analysis of Daily Rainfall in São Carlos/SP, Brazil over 1979-2017 Using Laplace Trend Test

Rainfall expresses one of the most complex climate factors in Southeastern Brazil. Understanding the dynamics and temporal trends of rainfall represents a significant challenge due to regional and even global mechanisms, such as FS (Frontal Systems) and the SACZ (South Atlantic Convergence Zone), and the interaction with the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The present study aimed at analyzing the pluviometric tendencies in São Carlos/SP, in the countryside of São paulo State. Laplace trend test was used to comprehend the temporal evolution of daily rainfall in the region in the historical series 1979-2017, in seven pluviometric stations (climatological or surface stations). Significant fluctuations in interannual trends and between seasons were observed. However, it was noted that the beginning of the 1980s showed positive trends, whereas, as of the year 2000, most of the stations demonstrated negative trends, indicating a reduction in daily rainfall volume due to the great tropical climatic variability of Brazil. Emphasis should also be given to the regional and local effects, such as elevation and urbanization, respectively, which corroborate such differences among the analyzed stations. This methodology is of considerable value for the observation of pluviometric trends, and future studies can validate such a tool in climatological studies.

Facial Asymmetry Caused by Mandibular Osteoma: Case Report

Osteoma is a benign tumor that often affects the maxillofacial region. It exhibits slow growth and remains asymptomatic for prolonged time and may cause facial asymmetry or functional disorders when it reaches vast proportions. When osteomalacia is diagnosed it is important to check about Gardner’s Syndrome because up to 90% of patients with this syndrome may present skeletal abnormalities and osteomas. The objective of this paper is to report a case of a 54-year-old woman that related an 8-year evolution of a volume increase in the face. Clinical examination showed facial asymmetry and presence of nodular lesion located in the left region of the mandibule, painless and hard on palpation. Panoramic radiography showed radiopaque image limited to the left mandibular body and angle, suggestive of osteoma. Gastrointestinal review was requested and discarded intestinal polyps and Gardner’s Syndrome. The patient was submitted to excisional biopsy and microscopic examination of the tumor that confirmed the diagnosis of osteoma. Osteoma needs special attention due to the possible association with malignant lesions intestine and also by psychological and functional problems, when it reaches great proportions.
