Fungal endophytic species inhabiting the leaves of eucalypts are capable of utilising leaf sugars and can influence both plant growth and health. Endophytic fungal symbionts can use simple soluble sugars in leaves as their main carbon source. This study set out to determine the diversity and distribution of the endophytic filamentous fungal leaf community in the hybrid Eucalyptus urograndis due to its economic importance. The fungal leaf community was characterised using denaturing gradient electrophoresis (DGGE) and correlated with levels of leaf nutrients and sugars throughout plant development. Sequencing of DGGE bands revealed the presence of Basidiomycota and Ascomycota phyla. Fourteen species and three genera of filamentous fungi were identified, and the population structure was affected by the plant developmental stage. Levels of K, Cu, N and Mn influenced communities from the clonal garden, whereas leaves in the field had higher glucose, fructose and sucrose. Many fungi were found to be specific to a certain development stages: Diplomitoporus crustulinus, Podosphaera tridactyla and Aspergillus restrictus to the clonal garden stage;Chaetomella acutiseta and Ascotricha chartarum to the shading stage;Erratomyces patelii and Saxomyces sp. to the shading output stage;Lepidostroma sp. and Saxomyces sp. to the dispatch stage;and Mycosphaerella populicola to the field stage. Teratosphaeria toledana and Teratosphaeria acidotherma were found at more than one developmental stage. Cladosporium sp. and Rhodosporidium fluviale colonized and persisted in plants at the dispatch and field stages. This is the first report of P. tridactyla, A. restrictus, E. patelii, Saxomyces and Lepidostroma sp. as endophytes in eucalipt.

Meningococcal disease is the acute infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis, which has humans as the only natural host. The disease is widespread around the globe and is known for its epidemical potential and high rates of lethality and morbidity. The highest number of cases of the disease is registered in the semi-arid regions of sub-Saharan Africa. In Brazil, it is endemic with occasional outbreaks, epidemics and sporadic cases occurring throughout the year, especially in the winter. The major epidemics of the disease occurred in Brazil in the 70's caused by serogroups A and C. Serogroups B, C and Y represent the majority of cases in Europe, the Americas and Australia. However, there has been a growing increase in serogroup W in some areas. The pathogen transmission happens for respiratory route(droplets) and clinically can lead to meningitis and sepsis(meningococcemia). The treatment is made with antimicrobial and supportive care. For successful prevention, we have some measures like vaccination, chemoprophylaxis and droplets' precautions. In this review, we have described and clarify clinical features of the disease caused by N. meningitidis regarding its relevance for healthcare professionals.

RANS feasibility study of using roughness to mimic transition strip effect on the crossflowseparation over a 6:1 prolate-spheroid

An axisymmetric body at incidence experiences the three-dimensional crossflow separation. This separation is attributed to the adverse circumferential pressure gradient. However, the separation pattern is also dependent upon the structure of the boundary layer. In this regard, utilization of transition strip devices in experiments on axisymmetric bodies may modify this structure, and consequently the crossflow separation pattern. The main objective of the present research is to mimic numerically the transition strip effect on the crossflow separation over a 6:1 prolate-spheroid up to a = 30° incidence and ReL = 4.2 x 10&. However, to avoid direct modeling of the strip, which would increase the computational cost, an attempt was made to add roughness over the body surface. To estimate the roughness that simulates closely the transition strip effect, three different roughness values were considered. The numerical model is based on RANS and a Reynolds stress turbulence model implemented in STARCCM+. The simulations have been evaluated based on the local and global variables and validated against the available experimental data. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of using a proper roughness value to mimic the transition strip effect. They also show the importance of modeling the transition strip effect, which is normally not taken into account, to capture the crossflow separation pattern.

Narrow-band imaging without magnification for detecting early esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

AIM:To compare narrow-band imaging(NBI)without image magnification,and chromoendoscopy with Lugol's solution for detecting high-grade dysplasia and intramu-cosal esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(SCC)in patients with head and neck ***:This was a prospective observational study of 129 patients with primary head and neck tumors consecutively referred to the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Unit of Hospital das Clínicas,S?o paulo University Medical School,Brazil,between August 2006 and Feb-ruary *** examinations with NBI and Lugol chromoendoscopy were consecutively performed,and the discovered lesions were mapped,recorded and sent for *** results of the three methods were compared regarding sensitivity,specificity,accuracy,positive predictive value,negative predictive value,positive likelihood value and negative likelihood ***:Of the 129 patients,nine(7%)were diagnosed with SCC,5 of which were in situ and 4 which were *** carcinomas were detected through NBI and Lugol *** 4 lesions were diagnosed through conventional examination,all of which were larger than 10 ***:NBI technology with optical filters has high sensitivity and high negative predictive value for detecting superficial esophageal SCC,and produces results comparable to those obtained with 2.5%Lugol chromoendoscopy.

BACKGROUND Achalasia is a rare benign esophageal motor disorder characterized by incomplete relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter(LES). The treatment of achalasia is not curative, but rather is aimed at reducing LES pressure. In patients who have failed noninvasive therapy, surgery should be considered. Myotomy with partial fundoplication has been considered the first-line treatment for non-advanced achalasia. Recently, peroral endoscopic myotomy(POEM), a technique that employs the principles of submucosal endoscopy to perform the equivalent of a surgical myotomy,has emerged as a promising minimally invasive technique for the management of this *** To compare POEM and laparoscopic myotomy and partial fundoplication(LM-PF) regarding their efficacy and outcomes for the treatment of *** Forty treatment-naive adult patients who had been diagnosed with achalasia based on clinical and manometric criteria(dysphagia score ≥ II and Eckardt score > 3) were randomized to undergo either LM-PF or POEM. The outcome measures were anesthesia time, procedure time, symptom improvement, reflux esophagitis(as determined with the Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Questionnaire), barium column height at 1 and 5 min(on a barium esophagogram), pressure at the LES, the occurrence of adverse events(AEs), length of stay(LOS), and quality of life(QoL).RESULTS There were no statistically significant differences between the LM-PF and POEM groups regarding symptom improvement at 1, 6, and 12 mo of follow-up(P = 0.192, P = 0.242, and P = 0.242, respectively). However, the rates of reflux esophagitis at 1, 6, and 12 mo of follow-up were significantly higher in the POEM group(P = 0.014, P < 0.001, and P = 0.002, respectively). There were also no statistical differences regarding the manometry values, the occurrence of AEs, or LOS. Indicator of Agriculture Vulnerability to Climatic Extremes. A Conceptual Model with Case Study for the Northeast Brazil

The Northeast Brazil (NEB) is known for its temporal and spatial variability of precipitation. Several studies have investigated this variability in order to understand the damaging episodes such as droughts and floods. The phenomenon of drought in the NEB is a complex topic due to affecting?millions of people and being?the object of study in several fields of knowledge. One way to try to argue about this phenomenon is through the concept of vulnerability. The “operability” of this broad concept in natural disasters is a complex task. In order to measure an indicator of vulnerability it is necessary large amount of data from different areas of knowledge, among which?include: meteorology, socio-environmental, economic, public health, among other areas. The main objective of this study is to create an index of vulnerability to climate extremes (drought and flood) for the NEB and to compare this rate with those found in the scientific literature. The data that will be used in this study are from ANA (Agência Nacional das águas), IBGE (Instituto Brasileiro de Georgrafia e Estatística), and Ministry of National integration.
