MJO Modulation of station Rainfall in the semiarid serido,Northeast Brazil

The influence of the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) on station rainfall over the seridó region of Rio Grande do Norte state, Northeast Brazil is examined based on 17 raingauge daily data over 30-year period (1 January-31 December, 1981-2010). The seridó is one of the driest regions in Northeast Brazil and is recognized as particularly vulnerable to desertification by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. Firstly, daily anomalies were calculated by removing the 30-year daily climatology. Then, to distinguish the MJO signal from other patterns of climate variability, the daily anomalies were band pass filtered in the frequency domain (20 - 90 days) by applying Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Composites of rainfall anomalies were computed for each of the eight phases of the MJO during February-May (FMAM) rainy season, based on the Jones-Carvalho MJO index. Only days classified as MJO events were considered in the composites. For each phase composite, statistical significance tests were computed independently at each individual station by applying a two-tailed student’s t-test at 5% significance level. Preliminary results showed that the rainfall anomalies have a spatial coherence throughout the MJO cycle. Extreme positive (negative) anomalies occurred in phase 2 (phase 5), where 13 (12) out of the 17 stations showed statistically significant anomalies in the range of 0.9 - 1.9 mm/day (0.8 - 1.7 mm/day). The typical difference between the wet MJO phase 2 and dry phase 5 represented at least 50% modulation of the daily mean rainfall.

Environmentally friendly energy sources alternatives to fossil fuels such as solar and wind are strategic for meeting the needs of an increasingly energy demanding society,despite their periodic/intermittent ***,urge the development of clean and renewable energy sources such as based on solar energy and water in a cyclic way,by photoinduced water-splitting and regeneration in fuel *** this context,energy storage devices such as hybrid supercapacitors become fundamental for realization of a sustainable *** this review,the early discovery and recent advances concerning synthetic strategies,hierarchical structures,and oxygen evolution reaction(OER)/hydrogen evolution reactions(HER) catalytic performances of nickel-vanadium double hydroxides(NiV-LDHs) based nanomaterials are summarized.A discussion about the role of vanadium ions in HER/OER was also included,highlighting the recent progress in theoretical calculations in this ***,some hybrid supercapacitor electrode materials based on NiV-LDHs are described,including the strategies to circumvent the parasitic oxygen evolution reaction during charge-discharge of those energy storage *** short,catalysts for HER/OER and hybrid supercapacitor electrode materials based on NiV-LDHs were reviewed considering their key multifunctional role in the way to a more sustainable society.

We present a new approach for calculating the C-factor of RUsLE considering the effect of low-reflectance vegetation cover areas on the reduction of the effects on erosion caused by rainfall *** this,we propose the coefficients Cr2(rescaled 2)and C-PC(Precipitation Correction),which represent the Cfactor,and an adaptation in NDVI calculation,according to the seasonality of precipitation(NDVI-PC).The Cr2 factor is used when there is no seasonal effect of rainfall on vegetation,while the C-PC factor is calculated for localities under the influence of seasonality,from *** proposed approaches were tested using different satellites images in the Palmares-Ribeir~ao do saco watershed,Rio de Janeiro,*** values of Cr2 and C-PC factors were compared to the Cr factor(rescaled)and to mean values from the literature for different land *** results indicated that the Cr2 factor represents an improvement in accuracy in relation to Cr by considering specific values of the studied area to normalize the data without ***,the C-PC factor is able to simulate the effect of seasonality,providing more realistics values of soil loss by the RUsLE as a function of the proportion of area affected by the rainfall seasonality obtained from *** conclude that both Cr2 and C-PC factors generate values similar of the C-factor observed in the literature,and therefore are able to provide better soil loss estimation than that using the Cr factor.

The temporal decay of the oxidation of methane(CH4-O2reaction)over palladium supported on silica is determined experimentally at different temperatures,comparing the results with those of various classical models which show the behavior of the adsorbed phase as the cause of the *** effect is visualized through Monte Carlo simulations of the CH4-O2reaction on a mixed lattice whose partial poisoning,due to the configuration of the OH groups on the surface of the adsorbate,is translated into a gradual decay of the reaction’s activity.

Indicator of Agriculture Vulnerability to Climatic Extremes. A Conceptual Model with Case study for the Northeast Brazil

The Northeast Brazil (NEB) is known for its temporal and spatial variability of precipitation. several studies have investigated this variability in order to understand the damaging episodes such as droughts and floods. The phenomenon of drought in the NEB is a complex topic due to affecting?millions of people and being?the object of study in several fields of knowledge. One way to try to argue about this phenomenon is through the concept of vulnerability. The “operability” of this broad concept in natural disasters is a complex task. In order to measure an indicator of vulnerability it is necessary large amount of data from different areas of knowledge, among which?include: meteorology, socio-environmental, economic, public health, among other areas. The main objective of this study is to create an index of vulnerability to climate extremes (drought and flood) for the NEB and to compare this rate with those found in the scientific literature. The data that will be used in this study are from ANA (Agência Nacional das águas), IBGE (Instituto Brasileiro de Georgrafia e Estatística), and Ministry of National integration.

A Note on Pacific Decadal Oscillation,El Nino southern Oscillation,Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and the Intertropical Front in sahel,Africa

The advance and retreat of the sahara Desert are repetitive in decadal time scale. This climate variability, unique in the world, results from the irregular motion of the Intertropical Front (ITF), a discontinuity originated from the convergence of two air masses over the African continent. It results from the convergence of a dry air mass flowing off the North African anticyclone and a southwestern warm and humid air mass that originates off the south Atlantic anticyclone. As it crosses the equator, this air stream is shifted rightwards, becoming southwesterly winds and transporting moisture into the continent. The equatorial thermal low associated with ITF over the continent is deeper and more intense than the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) one and its thermodynamic properties differ remarkably, moisture concentration in particular. The ITF annual latitudinal displacement is larger than that of the Atlantic ITCZ, reaching 20?N commonly during the North Hemisphere summer. In this manuscript one discuss about the possibility that Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) is not a regular physical oscillation and its phases duration may not be predictable and be dependent of large magnitude seismic events, which are rare and random. An important point, however, is that the Pacific sea surface temperature (ssT) pattern, once established and recognized, may remain for a relative long (decades) period. Its ssT pattern, due to its large area extension, modulates the global climate forcing the large scale general circulation features, ENsO in particular, to produce distinct regional impacts, depending on the signal and strength of the ssT anomalies. This happened with the ITF in the sahel and may possibly have occurred with other large scale atmospheric structures, such as the Asian Monsoon, convergence zones and subtropical anticyclones centers positioning.

Bats are the second-most diverse group of mammals in the world,and bat flies are their main ***,significant knowledge gaps remain regarding these antagonistic interactions,especially since diverse factors such as seasonality and host sex can affect their network ***,we explore the influence of such factors by comparing species richness and composition of bat flies on host bats,as well as specialization and modularity of bat–bat fly interaction networks between seasons and adult host *** captured bats and collected their ectoparasitic flies at 10 sampling sites in the savannahs of Amapástate,northeastern region of the Brazilian *** female bats being more parasitized and recording greater bat fly species richness in the wet season,neither relationship was statistically *** pooled network could be divided into 15 compartments with 54 links,and all subnetworks comprised>12 *** total number of links ranged from 27 to 48(for the dry and wet seasons,respectively),and female and male subnetworks had 44 and 41 links,*** values were very low for the pooled network and for all *** results revealed higher bat fly species richness and abundance in the wet season,whereas specialization and modularity were higher in the dry ***,the subnetwork for female bats displayed higher specialization and modularity than the male ***,both seasonality and host sex contribute in different ways to bat–bat fly network *** studies should consider these factors when evaluating bat–bat fly interaction networks.

streamflow prediction in ungauged catchments by using the Grunsky method

Establish a reliable rainfall-runoff relation capable of predicting runoff in ungauged basins is a matter of interest across the world for a long time and has been taking importance during the past *** approaches,hydrological models and machine learning techniques have been used to estimate ***,returning some simplicity to the predictions might be necessary for practical *** this paper,we re-introduce *** approach,developed in the early 1900s to predict runoff from values of precipitation on a two-equations ***,we analyze the Grunsky generalized method applied for 716 Brazilian catchments,on an interannual and monthly ***,we established the best method to find the rainfall-runoff relation coefficient for each ***,we evaluate the performance of the method on a local scale,i.e.,catchment by ***,we analyze the method of regionalization,by grouping the catchments into six hydrologically similar *** local scale,the Kling-Gupta Efficiency(KGE)values range from 0.87 to 0.93 on the interannual scale and is greater than 0.50 on the monthly *** the regionalized approach,KGE varies from 0.60 to 0.84 on an interannual *** also found suitable KGE values on a monthly scale,with more than 22%of catchments with KGE greater than 0.50,being the best performances in the Non-seasonal and Extremely-wet groups,and the worst performance in the Dry *** findings indicate that Grunsky approach is suitable to predict streamflow for Brazilian catchments on interannual and monthly *** simple and easy-to-use equation presents a reliable alternative to more complex methods to compute runoff by only using rainfall data.

UV Index Modeling by Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ADL Model)

The objective of this work is to model statistically the ultraviolet radiation index (UV Index) to make forecast (extrapolate) and analyze trends. The task is relevant, due to increased UV flux and high rate of cases non-melanoma skin cancer in northeast of Brazil. The methodology utilized an Autoregressive Distributed Lag model (ADL) or Dynamic Linear Regression model. The monthly data of UV index were measured in east coast of the Brazilian Northeast (City of Natal-Rio Grande do Norte). The Total Ozone is single explanatory variable to model and was obtained from the TOMs and OMI/AURA instruments. The Predictive Mean Matching (PMM) method was used to complete the missing data of UV Index. The results mean squared error (MsE) between the observed UV index and interpolated data by model was of 0.36 and for extrapolation was of 0.30 with correlations of 0.90 and 0.91 respectively. The forecast/extrapolation performed by model for a climatological period (2012-2042) indicated a trend of increased UV (seasonal Man-Kendall test scored τ = 0.955 and p-value 0.001) if the Total Ozone remain on this tendency to reduce. In those circumstances, the model indicated an increase of almost one unit of UV index to year 2042.

Purpose:This meta-analytical study aimed to explore the effects of resistance training(RT) volume on body adiposity,metabolic risk,and inflammation in postmenopausal and older ***:A systematic search was performed for randomized controlled trials in PubMed,scopus,Web of science,and *** controlled trials with postmenopausal and older females that compared RT effects on body adiposity,metabolic risk,and inflammation with a control group(CG) were *** reviewers selected the studies,extracted the data,and performed the risk of bias and certainty of the evidence(Grading of Recommendations,Assessment,Development,and Evaluation(GRADE)) *** body and abdominal adiposity,blood lipids,glucose,and C-reactive protein were included for meta-analysis.A random-effects model,standardized mean difference(Hedges’ g),and 95% confidence interval(95%CI) were used for ***:Twenty randomized controlled trials(overall risk of bias:some concerns;GRADE:low to very low) with overweight/obese postmenopausal and older females were *** groups were divided into low-volume RT(LVRT,~44 sets/week) and high-volume RT(HVRT,~77 sets/week).Both RT groups presented improved body adiposity,metabolic risk,and inflammation when compared to ***,HVRT demonstrated higher effect sizes than LVRT for glucose(HVRT=-1.19;95%CI:-1.63 to-0.74;LVRT=-0.78;95%CI:-1.15 to-0.41) and C-reactive protein(HVRT=-1.00;95%CI:-1.32 to-0.67;LVRT=-0.34;95%CI,-0.63 to-0.04)) when compared to ***:Compared to CG,HVRT protocols elicit greater improvements in metabolic risk and inflammation outcomes than LVRT in overweight/obese postmenopausal and older females.
