some cities worldwide have oil wells directly affecting the management of the *** example,La Libertad and salinas districts contain 467 oil wells in urban areas representing a major land-use planning *** objective is to apply the CLUE-s land use model in coastal cities with oil wells(salinas-La Libertad),using geographic information systems considering environmental and security characteristics for territorial *** stages of the study are:i)classification and categorisation of oil wells;ii)application of the GIs-CLUE-s method and visualisation of land use dynamics;iii)use the sWOT-TOWs matrix,for the analysis of the situation and the main factors affecting the *** results indicate high vulnerability in many urban sectors and those close to the ***,the CLUE-s analysis shows that the population growth in the urban sector is close to oil well areas,making it a complex pole of human-industry interaction that impacts the management of the *** study synthesises three technical aspects:some oil wells do not comply with municipal ordinance regulations;identification of vulnerable zones due to environmental and security factors,which recommends a territorial reordering policy;as well as an education plan for the application of territorial ordering policies,with awareness and sustainability projections.

Motor competence and health-related fitness in children:A cross-cultural comparison between Portugal and the United states

Background: Motor competence and health-related fitness are important components for the development and maintenance of a healthy lifestyle in children. This study examined cross-cultural performances on motor competence and health-related fitness between Portuguese and ***: Portuguese(n = 508; 10.14 § 2.13 years, mean § sD) and U.s.(n = 710; 9.48 § 1.62 years) children performed tests of cardiorespiratory fitness(Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance run), upper body strength(handgrip), locomotor skill performance(standing long jump), and object projection skill performance(throwing and kicking). Portuguese and U.s. children were divided into 2 age groups(6à9 and 10à13 years) for data analysis purposes. A twoàfactor oneàway analysis of covariance(ANOVA) was conducted with the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance run, handgrip, standing long jump scores, kicking, and throwing speed(km/h) as dependent ***: results indicated that Portuguese children, irrespective of sex, presented better performances in locomotor and cardiorespiratory performance(standing long jump and Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance run) than U.s. children in both age bands. U.s. children outperformed Portuguese children during throwing and handgrip tests. Kicking tests presented gender differences: Portuguese boys and U.s. girls outperformed their internationally matched ***: Cultural differences in physical education curricula and sports participation may impact differences in motor competence and fitness development in these countries.

Fabrication of Tailored Bragg Gratings by the Phase Mask Dithering/Moving Technique

The most relevant aspects related to the phase mask dithering/moving method for the fabrication of complex Bragg grating designs are reviewed. Details for experimental implementation of this technique is presented, including theoretical analysis of the calibration functions for the correct dither/displacement. results from tailored Bragg grating structures fabricated by this method are shown. Apodized Bragg gratings with modeled spatial profiles were implemented, resulting in side mode suppression levels of more than 20 dB in gratings showing transmission filtering level higher than 30 dB. Chirped gratings with the spectral bandwidth up to 4 nm, π-shift and sampled Bragg gratings with equalized peaks equally spaced by 0.8 nm （100 GHz） were also fabricated.

The application of phosphorus(P)to soil can increase its availability to plants and alter P fractions in annual and perennial organs of Cordia *** a portion of P accumulates in perennial organs in organic fractions it can be used in the next growth season,possibly decreasing plant dependence on P derived from soil ***,if P is preferentially accumulated in inorganic fractions in annual organs,plants will be more dependent on phosphate *** study aimed to evaluate the distribution of P fractions in organs of *** grown on sandy soil treated with 120 and 360 kg P2O5 ha^(−1).The control was a zero *** 24 months following fertilization,*** seedlings were cut and separated into leaves,branches,stems and roots,dried,ground and subjected to chemical fractionation of P,which estimates fractions of total soluble P,soluble inorganic and organic P,lipid P,P associated ribonucleic acid and deoxyribonucleic acid,and residual P.P in annual organs,as leaves,accumulated preferentially in the soluble inorganic fraction in both *** perennial organs such as stems and branches,P accumulated preferentially in the soluble organic *** application of 300%of the recommended dosage(360 kg P2O5 ha^(−1))promoted the accumulation of P in soluble organic fractions which may contribute to annual growth the following season and be a strategy to reduce the dependence of 2-year-old stands on soil-derived P and on fertilizers.

During the production of nitrile rubber, significant amounts of nitrogen in the form of ammonium are generated in the wastewater. The discharge of this high-nitrogen wastewater can lead to serious environmental issues, including eutrophication, disruption of aquatic ecosystems, and groundwater contamination. To mitigate these impacts, this research explored the bioremediation capabilities of the macroalgae Ulva lactuca (Chlorophyta) for removing nitrogen from nitrile rubber production wastewater. The study employed single-phase and Michaelis-Menten decay models based on ammonium consumption, using various dilutions of wastewater to identify the optimal concentration for treatment. The physiological state of the macroalgae was monitored by measuring the photosynthetic capacity and specific growth rate during the experiments. In the presence of U. lactuca, ammonium concentrations decreased in all treatment groups, confirming that the ammonium kinetics conformed to both applied models. Our results show that U. lactuca effectively reduces ammonium concentrations, with an approximate removal rate of 0.020 µM·g−1·min−1 across different wastewater concentrations (70%, 80%, 90%, and 100%). Notably, the treatments with 70%, 80%, and 90% wastewater strength achieved about 67% reduction in ammonium, demonstrating the alga’s capacity to treat high-nitrogen wastewater. The photosynthetic performance of U. lactuca initially declined in control conditions but stabilized across all treatments, highlighting its adaptability. The kinetic analysis using the Michaelis-Menten model indicated a Vmax of 1342 μM·g−1·DMh−1, suggesting a robust capacity for ammonium uptake when fully saturated. Our study underscores the potential of Ulva lactuca as a cost-effective and efficient agent for wastewater bioremediation, particularly in settings with high nitrogen loads.

Background The savannah ecosystems of sahel have experienced continuous and heavy grazing of livestock for centuries but still,their vegetation response to grazing pressure remains poorly *** this study,we analysed the herbaceous plant dynamics,measured by species diversity,composition,cover,and biomass in response to grazing pressure in the savannah ecosystems of *** senegal,we selected four savannah sites represented with high,moderate,light and no grazing intensity *** survey methods were used for sampling the vegetation data within each of the *** richness and composition were analysed using species accumulation curve and multivariate ***,we used General Linear Models and a piecewise structural Equation Model(psEM)to examine the relationships between grazing intensity,vegetation cover,diversity and *** The herbaceous species diversity and composition varied significantly among the different grazing intensity levels(pspecies composition shifted from the dominance of grass cover to the dominance of forb cover with increasing grazing ***,the attributes of species diversity,herbaceous biomass,and ground cover were higher on sites with low grazing than sites with high and moderate grazing *** all sites,species diversity was positively related to total *** psEM explained 37%of the variance in total biomass and revealed that grazing intensity negatively influenced total biomass both directly and indirectly through its negative influence on species *** Managing grazing intensity may lead to higher plant production and higher mixed forage establishment in the dryland savannah *** information can be used to support land management strategies and promote sustainable grazing practices that balance the needs of livestock with the conservation of ecosystem health and biodiversity.

Narrow-band imaging without magnification for detecting early esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

AIM：To compare narrow-band imaging（NBI）without image magnification,and chromoendoscopy with Lugol＇s solution for detecting high-grade dysplasia and intramu-cosal esophageal squamous cell carcinoma（sCC）in patients with head and neck ***：This was a prospective observational study of 129 patients with primary head and neck tumors consecutively referred to the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Unit of Hospital das Clínicas,sao paulo University Medical school,Brazil,between August 2006 and Feb-ruary *** examinations with NBI and Lugol chromoendoscopy were consecutively performed,and the discovered lesions were mapped,recorded and sent for *** results of the three methods were compared regarding sensitivity,specificity,accuracy,positive predictive value,negative predictive value,positive likelihood value and negative likelihood ***：Of the 129 patients,nine（7%）were diag-nosed with sCC,5 of which were in situ and 4 which were *** carcinomas were detected through NBI and Lugol *** 4 le-sions were diagnosed through conventional examination,all of which were larger than 10 ***：NBI technology with optical filters has high sensitivity and high negative predictive value for detecting superficial esophageal sCC,and produces results comparable to those obtained with 2.5%Lugol chromoendoscopy.

Evaluation of Early Action Mechanisms in Peru regarding Preparedness for El Nino

In this article,we provide an impact evaluation of an intervention in Peru regarding preparedness for El Nino impacts in Picsi District of Chiclayo Province in Peru’s northwestern coastal Lambayeque *** effort involved the provision of special kits that reduce the potential damage to homes as a consequence of rainfall and floods associated with an El Nino-southern Oscillation *** was collected in 2016 when this Forecast-based Financing early action was activated by an El Nino forecast,and after a coastal El Nino actually struck in *** dual database permits us to estimate the impact of the intervention on the damage level of homes by comparing those homes supported by the program with those homes not receiving pilot-program *** comparison is achieved by using propensity score matching techniques,which identify the most comparable homes to the ones that were supported by the *** main findings of the study suggest a positive impact of the program in terms of its effectiveness in mitigating the damage caused by the 2017 El Ni?*** results suggest a drop in the scale of house damage(less damage)by around 63%for a home that received the modular kit *** considering other specifications of the model,the decrease in the scale of house damage improves up to approximately 66%.

Communicating with the non-dominant hemisphere:Implications for neurological rehabilitation

Aphasic syndromes usually result from injuries to the dominant hemisphere of the brain. Despite the fact that localization of language functions shows little interindividual variability, several brain areas are simultaneously activated when language tasks are undertaken. Mechanisms of language recovery after brain injury to the dominant hemisphere seem to be relatively stereotyped, including activations of perilesional areas in the acute phase and of homologues of language areas in the non-dominant hemisphere in the subacute phase, later returning to dominant hemisphere activation in the chronic phase. Plasticity mechanisms reopen the critical period of language development, more specifically in what leads to disinhibition of the non-dominant hemisphere when brain lesions affect the dominant hemisphere. The non-dominant hemisphere plays an important role during recovery from aphasia, but currently available rehabilitation therapies have shown limited results for efficient language improvement. Large-scale randomized controlled trials that evaluate well-defined interventions in patients with aphasia are needed for stimulation of neuroplasticity mechanisms that enhance the role of the non-dominant hemisphere for language recovery. Ineffective treatment approaches should be replaced by more promising ones and the latter should be evaluated for proper application. The data generated by such studies could substantiate evidence-based rehabilitation strategies for patients with aphasia.
