Germination strategies of annual and short-lived perennial species in the Arabian Desert

Germination timing is highly regulated in short-lived plant species since it strongly influences recruitment success of *** deserts,the spatiotemporal distribution of plant-available water is highly episodic and unpredictable,making winter months more favorable for seed germination when other abiotic conditions *** hypothesized that changes in photoperiod and thermoperiod would impact germination more in seeds that had undergone in situ *** assessed 21 annual and short-lived perennial species in the Arabian Desert to find(1)if seeds were dormant at maturity,(2)if in situ seed storage increased germination percentage compared with no storage,(3)if photoperiod and thermoperiod germination requirements were influenced by in situ storage,and(4)if a phylogenetic association in seed germination could be *** of each species collected in early 2017 were divided into two *** was tested for germination within one week(fresh seeds).The other was stored in situ at the maternal location(stored seeds)until October 2017 and tested for seed germination in the first week of *** germination was conducted in incubators at two thermoperiods(15℃/20℃ and 20℃/30℃;12 h/12 h),and two photoperiods(12 and 0 h light per day).Results indicated that seed germination percentages of 13 species were significantly enhanced by in situ storage.A thermoperiod response was exhibited by stored,but not fresh *** exposure increased germination of fresh seeds but had only a minimal effect on stored *** traits exhibited no phylogenetic *** result indicated that selection pressure for germination strategy was stronger than that for taxonomic traits of these desert species.

Critical methodological challenges in the microbial biosensor approach to assessing Hg（II） bioavailability were evaluated from the perspective of analytical chemists. The main challenge stems from the fact that the chemical speciation of Hg（II） in natural waters exerts a maj.r control on its bioavailability, yet its natural complexation equilibria are extensively altered during conventional bioassays. New data, obtained using a bioluminescent Hg（II）-biosensor, that illustrate these challenges are presented and potential solutions proposed.

Rainfall erosivity and erosivity density through rainfall synthetic series for Sao paulo State,Brazil:Assessment,regionalization and modeling

Rainfall is the main cause of erosion of Brazilian soils,which makes assessing the rainfall erosivity factor(RE)and the erosivity density(ED)fundamental for soil and water ***,the obj.ctives of this study were:i)to estimate the RE and ED for Sao paulo State,Brazil,using synthetic series of pluviographic data;ii)to define homogeneous regions regarding rainfall erosivity;and iii)to generate regression models for rainfall erosivity estimates in each of the homogeneous *** series of pluviographic data were initially obtained on a sub-daily scale from the daily rainfall records of 696 rainfall *** RE values were then estimated from the synthetic rainfall data,and ED was calculated from the relationship between erosivity and rainfall *** and annual maps for RE and ED were *** clustering analysis was used to define homogeneous regions in terms of rainfall erosivity,and regionalized regression models for estimating RE were *** results demonstrate high spatial variability of RE in Sao paulo,where the highest annual values were observed in the coastal *** to March concentrate approximately 60%of the intra-annual *** highest values of annual ED were observed in regions with intense agricultural *** definition of five homogeneous regions concerning the rainfall erosive potential evidenced distinct seasonal patterns of the spatial distribution of ***,the high predictive accuracy of the regionalized models obtained characterizes them as essential tools for reliable estimates of rainfall erosivity,and contribute to better soil conservation planning.

Obj.ctives:The purpose of this work was to study the infection course and cross-protection in mice after intradermal inj.ction of Vaccinia virus(VACV) strain Western Reserve and three Brazilian VACV strains: Aracatuba,Muriae and BeAn58058 isolated from cow,human and rodent,***:Balb/c mice were inoculated by footpad and back scarification and daily monitored regarding lesion development and weight *** check cross protection after intradermal VACV inoculation,mice were subsequendy infected with different VACV strains and monitored to check lesion *** neutralization assays were performed to check for the presence of antibodies against ***:After VACV intradermal inoculation the lesion development pattern was similar in mice infected with the different virus *** using the footpad scarification model,cross-protection among VACV strains was ***,neutralizing antibodies against Orthopoxvirus were detected in sera from mice infected with all VACV ***:Although it was not possible to observe virulence differences among VACV strains isolated from cow,rodent and human using the murine model,this inoculation route showed to be an appropriated model to study lesions development since it mimics natural infections by VACV in nature.

Deep foundations are currently used in engineering practice to solve problems caused by weak geotechnical characteristics of the *** pile driving is an interesting and viable solution from economic and technical points of ***,it is necessary to ensure that the environmental drawbacks,namely ground-borne vibration,are adequately *** this purpose,the authors propose an axisymmetric finite element method-perfectly matched layer(FEM-PML)approach,where the nonlinear behavior of the soil is addressed through an equivalent linear *** the complexity of the problem,an experimental test site was developed and fully *** experimental work comprised in-situ and laboratory soil characterization,as well as the measurement of vibrations induced during pile *** comparison between experimental and numerical results demonstrated a very good agreement,from which it can be concluded that the proposed numerical approach is suitable for the prediction of vibrations induced by impact pile *** experimental database is available as supplemental data and may be used by other researchers in the validation of their prediction models.

Immunoexpression of cyclooxygenase-2 in primary gastric carcinomas and lymph node metastases

AIM: To evaluate immunoexpression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in primary gastric carcinomas and respective lymph node metastases. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry to analyze COX-2 expression was performed on tissue microarray slices obtained from 36 specimens of gastrectomy and satellite lymph nodes from patients with gastric carcinoma. RESULTS: Immunostaining was seen in most cases, and COX-2 expression was higher in lymph node me-tastases than in corresponding primary gastric tumors of intestinal, diffuse and mixed carcinomas, with a statistically signif icant difference in the diffuse histotype (P = 0.0108). CONCLUSION: COX-2 immunoexpression occurs frequently in primary gastric carcinomas, but higher expression of this enzyme is observed in lymph node metastases of the diffuse histotype.

Phase separation and coarsening of NiAl(β′)intermetallic in quench-aged Fe-Ni-Al alloys

The coarsening behavior of four quench-aged Fe-Ni-AI alloys with different Ni and Al con tents is *** alloys were solubilized at 1100℃for 24 h,water-quenched and aged at 850℃for periods ranging from 1 to 100 h to promote phase separation and *** two alloys with the highest combined Ni and Al contents(>35 at.%)showed signs of spinodal decomposition,while the alloys with lower Ni and Al contents followed a classical nucleation *** Ni and Al contents promoted an increase in NiAl(β′)phase fraction in concordance with phase equilibrium *** alloy with the highest[3'fraction presented a completely interconnected *** coarsening ofβ′particles in the other three alloys followed the predictions of the Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner(LSW)*** general trend was an increase in the coarsening kinetics with higher Ni and Al *** highest hardness was found in the alloys with higher fraction albeit these compositions are less resistant to coarsening and have been reported to present a low room-temperature ductility.
