esophageal atresia (eA) with or without tracheoesophageal fistula (TeF) is the most common congenital anomaly of the esophagus. The improvement of survival observed over the previous two decades is multifactorial and largely attributable to advances in neonatal intensive care, neonatal anesthesia, ventilatory and nutritional support, antibiotics, early surgical intervention, surgical materials and techniques. Indeed, mortality is currently limited to those cases with coexisting severe life-threatening anomalies. The diagnosis of eA is most commonly made during the first 24 h of life but may occur either antenatally or may be delayed. The primary surgical correction for eA and TeF is the best option in the absence of severe malformations. There is no ideal replacement for the esophagus and the optimal surgical treatment for patients with long-gap eA is still contro-versial. The primary complications during the postoperative period are leak and stenosis of the anastomosis, gastro-esophageal reflux, esophageal dysmotility, fistula recurrence, respiratory disorders and deformities of the thoracic wall. Data regarding long-term outcomes and follow-ups are limited for patients following eA/TeF repair. The determination of the risk factors for the complicated evolution following eA/TeF repair may positively impact long-term prognoses. Much remains to be studied regarding this condition. This manuscript provides a literature review of the current knowledge regarding eA.

We investigate the dynamical behavior of a symmetric linear coupling of three quadratic maps with exponential terms, and identify various interesting features as a function of two control parameters. In particular, we investigate the emergence of quasiperiodic states arising from Naimark-Sacker bifurcations of stable period-l, period-2, and period-3 orbits. We also investigate the multistability in the same coupling. Lyapunov exponents, parameter planes, phase space portraits, and bifurcation diagrams are used to investigate transitions from periodic to quasiperiodic states, from quasiperiodic to mode-locked states and to chaotic states, and from chaotic to hyperchaotic states.

Some two-dimensional parameter-space diagrams are numerically obtained by considering the largest Lyapunov exponent for a four-dimensional thirteen-parameter Hindmarsh-Rose neuron *** different parameter planes are considered,and it is shown that depending on the combination of parameters,a typical scenario can be preserved:for some choice of two parameters,the parameter plane presents a comb-shaped chaotic region embedded in a large periodic *** is also shown that there exist regions close to these comb-shaped chaotic regions,separated by the comb teeth,organizing themselves in period-adding bifurcation cascades.

Polycaprolactone(PCL)scaffolds that are produced through additive manufacturing are one of the most researched bone tissue engineering structures in the *** to the intrinsic limitations of PCL,carbon nanomaterials are often investigated to reinforce the PCL *** several studies that have been conducted on carbon nanomaterials,such as graphene(G)and graphene oxide(GO),certain challenges remain in terms of the precise design of the biological and nonbiological properties of the *** paper addresses this limitation by investigating both the nonbiological(element composition,surface,degradation,and thermal and mechanical properties)and biological characteristics of carbon nanomaterial-reinforced PCL scaffolds for bone tissue engineering *** showed that the incorporation of G and GO increased surface properties(reduced modulus and wettability),material crystallinity,crystallization temperature,and degradation ***,the variations in compressive modulus,strength,surface hardness,and cell metabolic activity strongly depended on the type of ***,a series of phenomenological models were developed based on experimental results to describe the variations of scaffold’s weight,fiber diameter,porosity,and mechanical properties as functions of degradation time and carbon nanomaterial *** results presented in this paper enable the design of three-dimensional(3D)bone scaffolds with tuned properties by adjusting the type and concentration of different functional fillers.

Surgical treatment of Peyronie＇s disease： choosing the best approach to improve patient satisfaction

Aim： To discuss important points on medical history, preoperative evaluation, real expectations, and selection of the appropriate surgical procedure to improve patient satisfaction after surgical procedures for Peyronie＇s disease. Methods： Recent advances in approaches to Peyronie＇s disease are discussed based on the literature and personal experiences. Issues concerning surgical indication, patient selection, surgical techniques, and grafting are discussed. Lengthening procedures on the convex side of the penile curvature by means of grafting offer the best possible gain from a reconstruction standpoint. Penile rectification and rigidity are required to achieve a completely functional penis. Most patients experience associated erectile dysfunction （eD）, and penile straightening alone may not be enough to restore complete function. Twenty-five patients were submitted to total penile reconstruction on length and girth with concomitant penile prosthesis implant. The maximum length restoration was possible and limited by the length of the dissected neurovascular bundle. The mean age was 55.4 years （32-69 years） and the mean angle of curvature 74.2± 22.4° （0-100°）. Pericardial grafting was used to cover the defect. The mean follow-up time was 11.2 ± 5.9 months （3-22 months）. Results： Mean functional penile length gain was 3.40 ＋ 0.73 cm （2-5 cm）. Penile prosthesis maintained the penis straight. No infections occurred. Sexual intercourse was restored in all patients and all reported recovered self-esteem. Conclusion： Improving patient satisfaction with the surgical treatment includes proper preoperative evaluation on stable disease, penile shortening, vascular and erectile status, patient decision and selection as well as extensive discussion on surgical technique for restoring functional penis （length and rigidity）. Length and girth restoration is very important for self-esteem and patient satisfaction.

Thin Layer Activation is a nuclear technique that has key advantages over other wear measuring techniques for mechanical systems,especially for in site experiments on equipment important to safety in nuclear ***,it incurs radioactive dose and,thus,must be proved radiologically safe before use,otherwise,the utilization of this technique may be hindered *** said technique is safe previous to any operational/monetary cost is key,providing a methodology for this early assertion is the main contribution of this work—here,only non-occupationally exposed individuals are *** work offers a methodology,through a case study,to ascertain the Thin Layer Activation parameters to obtain safe levels of radioactive dose while maintaining statistically reliable *** methodology consists of using simulations,through the Monte Carlo Method,to obtain the floors and ceilings for the previously mentioned activation parameters based on operation and work conditions on site.
