Notification Oriented Paradigm(NOP)and Imperative Paradigm:A comparative Study

This paper presents a new programming paradigm named Notification Oriented Paradigm (NOP) and analyses performance aspects of NOP programs by means of an experiment. NOP provides a new manner to conceive, structure, and execute software, which allows better performance, causal-knowledge organization, and entity decoupling than standard solutions based upon current paradigms. These paradigms are essentially Imperative Paradigm (IP) and Declarative Paradigm (DP). In short, DP solutions are considered easier to use than IP solutions thanks to the concept of high-level programming. However, they are considered slower to execute and lesser flexible to program than IP. Anyway, both paradigms present similar drawbacks like causal-evaluation redundancies and strongly coupled entities, which decrease software performance and processing distribution feasibility. These problems exist due to an orientation to monolithic inference mechanism based upon sequential evaluation by means of searches over passive computational entities. NOP proposes another manner to structure software and make its inferences, which is based upon small, smart, and decoupled collaborative entities whose interaction happen by means of precise notifications. This paper discusses NOP as a paradigm and presents certain comparison of NOP against IP. Actually, performance is evaluated by means of IP and NOP programs with respect to a same application, which allow demonstrating NOP superiority.

In this context, this paper presents a quantitative comparison between two equivalent implementations of a computer game simulator (Pacman simulator), one developed according to the principles of Object-Oriented Paradigm (OOP/IP) in c++ and other developed according to the principles of NOP. The results obtained from the experiments demonstrate, however, a quite lower performance of NOP implementation. This happened because NOP applications are still developed using a framework based on c++. Besides, the paper shows that optimizations in the NOP framework improve NOP program performance, thereby evidencing the necessity of developing a NOP language/compiler.

The results showed that NOP implementation obtained quite equivalent results with respect to OOP implementation. This happened because the NOP framework uses considerable expensive data-structures over c++. Thus, it is necessary a new compiler to NOP in order to actually use its potentiality.

The dynamics of a symmetric coupling of three modified quadratic maps

We investigate the dynamical behavior of a symmetric linear coupling of three quadratic maps with exponential terms, and identify various interesting features as a function of two control parameters. In particular, we investigate the emergence of quasiperiodic states arising from Naimark-Sacker bifurcations of stable period-l, period-2, and period-3 orbits. We also investigate the multistability in the same coupling. Lyapunov exponents, parameter planes, phase space portraits, and bifurcation diagrams are used to investigate transitions from periodic to quasiperiodic states, from quasiperiodic to mode-locked states and to chaotic states, and from chaotic to hyperchaotic states.

Dynamics in the Parameter Space of a Neuron Model

Some two-dimensional parameter-space diagrams are numerically obtained by considering the largest Lyapunov exponent for a four-dimensional thirteen-parameter Hindmarsh-Rose neuron model.Several different parameter planes are considered,and it is shown that depending on the combination of parameters,a typical scenario can be preserved:for some choice of two parameters,the parameter plane presents a comb-shaped chaotic region embedded in a large periodic region.It is also shown that there exist regions close to these comb-shaped chaotic regions,separated by the comb teeth,organizing themselves in period-adding bifurcation cascades.

Malignant cells upregulate distinct energy metabolism programs that support their proliferation,migration,and adaptation to the stressful tumor microenvironment(TME).Additionally,this exaggerated metabolic activity allows cancer cells to hijack essential nutrients and outcompete neighboring infiltrating immune cells,thereby impairing antitumor immunity.During recent years,there has been great interest in the field to understand the tumor-induced energy metabolism signals that regulate the function of immune cells in individuals with cancer.Accordingly,it is now well accepted that uncovering the mechanisms that instruct the metabolic behavior of cancer cells and tumor-associated immune cells is an indispensable strategy for the development of new approaches to overcome immune suppression in tumors.Thus,in this minireview,we briefly discuss the interaction between particular metabolic signaling pathways and immunosuppressive activity in different subsets of myeloid cells within the TME.Additionally,we illustrate potential central mechanisms controlling the metabolic reprogramming of myeloid cells in response to tumor-derived factors.

A RANS-VoF Numerical Model to Analyze the Output Power of An OWc-WEc Equipped with Wells and Impulse Turbines in A Hypothetical Sea-State

Wave energy is a renewable source with significant amount in relation to the global demand. A good concept of a device applied to extract this type of energy is the onshore oscillating water column wave energy converter(OWc-WEc). This study shows a numerical analysis of the diameter determination of two types of turbines, Wells and Impulse, installed in an onshore OWc device subjected to a hypothetical sea state. commercial software FLUENT?,which is based on RANS-VoF(Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations and Volume of Fluid technique), is employed. A methodology that imposes air pressure on the chamber, considering the air compressibility effect, is used. The mathematical domain consists of a 10 m deep flume with a 10 m long and 10 m wide OWc chamber at its end(geometry is similar to that of the Pico's plant installed in Azores islands, Portugal). On the top of the chamber, a turbine works with air exhalation and inhalation induced by the water free surface which oscillates due to the incident wave. The hypothetical sea state, represented by a group of regular waves with periods from 6 to 12 s and heights from 1.00 to 2.00 m(each wave with an occurrence frequency), is considered to show the potential of the presented methodology. Maximum efficiency(relation between the average output and incident wave powers) of46% was obtained by using a Wells turbine with the diameter of 2.25 m, whereas the efficiency was 44% by an Impulse turbine with the diameter of 1.70 m.

changes in the Dynamics of a Rössler Oscillator by an External Forcing

We report some results indicating changes in the observed dynamics of the Rössler model under the influence of external sinusoidal forcing.By varying the control parameters of the external sinusoidal forcing,namely the amplitude and the angular frequency,we show,through numerical simulations which include parameter planes and Lyapunov exponents,that the external forcing can produce both chaos-order and order-chaos transitions.We also show that the sinusoidal forcing may generate hyperchaos.

Juvenile hemochromatosis:HAMP mutation and severe iron overload treated with phlebotomies and deferasirox

Juvenile hemochromatosis(JH) is a rare condition classified as an autosomal recessive disorder that leads to severe iron absorption. JH usually affects people under the age of 30 and presents symptoms such as chronic liver damage,hypogonadotropic hypogonadism,cardiac diseases and endocrine dysfunctions. The present case reports a 29-year-old Brazilian woman with JH condition due to HAMP mutation(g.47G>A),treated with phlebotomies and deferasirox. She presented symptoms such as weakness,skin hyperpigmentation,joint pain in the shoulders and hands and amenorrhea. First laboratory tests showed altered biochemical parameters [serum ferritin(SF): 5696 ng/mL,transferrin saturation(TS): 85%]. After sessions of phlebotomies(450 mL every 15 d),the patient presented partial symptomatic improvements and biochemical parameters(SF: 1000 ng/mL,Hb: 11 g/dL). One year later,deferasirox(15 mg/kg per day) was introduced to the treatment,and the patient showed total symptomatic improvement,with significant clearing of the skin,SF: 169 ng/mL,and TS: 50%. Furthermore,after the combined deferasirox-phlebotomy therapy,magnetic resonance imaging measurements revealed normalized level for liver iron(30 μmol/g; reference value conclusion,combined deferasirox-phlebotomy treatment was able to normalize iron levels and improve symptoms.
