Correlation between therapy and lipid profile of leprosy patients:is there a higher risk for developing cardiovascular diseases after treatment?

Background:The impact of leprosy reduces health-related quality of life of affected patients,interfering with different factors such as *** study investigated the lipid profile,nutritional status,and risk for cardiovascular disease(CVD)in patients who underwent leprosy treatment in ***:Eighty-four adult patients of both genders ranging in age from 20 to 60 years and diagnosed with paucibacillary(PB)or multibacillary(MB)leprosy were selected after undergoing multidrug *** following data were collected:sociodemographic and clinical data;food intake;anthropometric measures(weight,height,and waist circumference);and lipid profile components(total cholesterol,high-density lipoprotein cholesterol[HDL-c],low-density lipoprotein cholesterol[LDL-c],and triglycerides).Results:Among the study population,there was a predominance of males(65.48%)aged 50 to 60 years,patients with an income of 248-496 American dollars(63.10%),patients who completed elementary school(65.48%),inactive patients(76.19%),non-smokers(46.43%),and non-drinking patients(69.05%).The levels(mean±standard deviation)of total cholesterol were 193.8±29.4 mg/dL in the PB form and 203.5±41.7 mg/dL in the MB *** mean LDL-c was 116.9±22.7 mg/dL in PB patients and 121±31.3 mg/dL in MB *** triglyceride levels were 123.4±45.2 mg/dL in the PB form and 147.4±88.9 mg/dL in the MB *** evaluation of nutritional status showed that 41.67%of the patients were eutrophic,while 55.96%had excess *** intake was significantly associated with HDL-c in male patients(P=0.0264)and with triglycerides in patients above the ideal weight(P=0.0049).Conclusions:The risk of acquiring CVDs was observed to be high due to patients’excess weight and increased waist *** study will guide clinicians in the adequate treatment of patients with leprosy in order to avoid adverse cardiovascular events.

Biomechanical Analysis of Implant Assisted-Overdentures with Variations in the Attachments Systems

The aim of this study was to assess the stress patterns on the peri-implant zone and residual alveolar ridge in different overdenture attachment system designs by the photoelasticity method. Four attachments systems were tested: O-ring, ERA, Bar-clip, and Bar-clip/O-ring association. The prostheses were loaded with 100 N in five pre-determined points and the photoelastic model was evaluated by a circular polariscope. The anterior load, O-ring, and ERA showed better stress distribution in relation to the bars systems, which presented stress levels surrounding implants. The molar load, Bar-clip/O-ring association, presented the biggest stress concentration on the peri-implant region in relation to the others. When the second molar was loaded, there was a concentration of stress in the alveolar ridge in all situations analyzed. Within the limitation of this “in vitro” study, it could be concluded that there were biomechanical differences among the attachments systems analyzed, principally between isolated and the bars systems. The O-ring showed better stress distribution and the Bar-clip/O-ring showed higher stress concentration.

Nutritional Quality of Olives and Olive oil Produced in the Serra Da Mantiqueira from Brazil

The olive tree (Olea europaea L.) is one of the oldest fruits grown by man. Its fruit can be processed into olive oil or treated properly and serve directly for the in natura consumption in the form of olives. Extracted from the olive, the olive oil is highly valued in the market, for its nutritional benefits and also for its unique and delicate flavor. Brazil is the second largest importer of olive oil in the world, but technology is already available and the expansion of the crop has been taking place in the south-southeast regions, where the climate is favorable, in order to serve this market. The objective of this work was to evaluate the physical and chemical qualities of the olives and characterize, sensorially and chemically, olive oils from different olive cultivars planted in the Region of Serra da Mantiqueira. The olives and olive oils produced from the cultivars Arbequina, Arbosana, Grapolo 541, Koroneiki and Maria da Fé were evaluated at the EPAMIG Experimental Field of Maria da Fé, Minas Gerais, and Brazil. In the first experiment the olives harvested in February of 2015 were analyzed in terms of weight, volume, transverse and longitudinal diameter of the fruit and the lump and the relation of the olive/lump and the chemical (protein, lipid, moisture and ashes). In the second experiment the olives were processed by the grinding, beating and centrifugation method to obtain the oils. The olive oils were analyzed for acidity, peroxide index and absorbance in the ultraviolet region at 274 nm, 270 nm, 266 nm and 232 nm. After this characterization the olive oils produced in the Serra da Mantiqueira were then submitted to sensorial analysis. The results were submitted to analysis of variance and the means were compared by the Tukey test at 5% of probability. Fractionation of rare earth elements（REE） and other trace metal concentrations（Th, U, Cd,Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn） between mangrove sediments and claw muscles and shells of male crabs（Ucides cordatus） from a subtropical estuary highly impacted by fertilizer industry activities was investigated. This is the first record of REE distribution in these organisms,and the results showed higher accumulations of these metals, U and Th in shells, probably related to the replacement of Ca during molting. Contents of Cd, Cr and Ni were similar in both tissues, but Cu, Zn and Pb were mostly accumulated in the claw muscle with concentrations above those considered safe for human consumption according to the Brazilian legislation. REE fractionation was different in the analyzed tissues being softer in the shells. The results provided evidences that the water absorbed during molting controls the chemistry of REE in shells. In contrast, the chemistry of REE in the claw muscle, in which was observed preferential absorption of light REE, is controlled by diet. REE fractionation obtained for the claw muscles was closely correlated to the observed in the contaminated substrate and in materials related to the production of phosphate fertilizers（contamination source）, which supports their transference to this Ucides cordatus tissue without fractionation by the ingestion of sediments. Our results showed the potential use of crab tissues for monitoring REE and trace element sources in mangrove areas, with claw muscle exhibiting the contaminant source fingerprint.

Dynamical Outlines of the Rainfall Variability and the ITCZ Role over the West Sahel

This article evaluated the plausible causes of floods and droughts, the relative roles of large-scale climate variability in regional environmental trends, and the prospects for the future of the semiarid Sahel region in the context of periodic climate change. It is pointed out that the most significant rainfall climatological changes in the Sahel probably occurred between 1950 and 1980 with the decrease of the annual rainfall, a very high deficit (about 70%) over the whole region. The last three decades considered in this research (1981-2010) showed some improvement. The more humid conditions were from the last decade 2001 to 2010. One of the most significant climatic variations has been the persistent rainfall decline in the Sahel since late 1960s. Remarkable latitudinal shift of ITF mean position towards the South generated an overall reduction of annual rainfall. Basically, in this manuscript one analyzes the dynamical features on rainfall time series and the association of the cyclic periods with teleconnections under the hypothesis that no alteration has occurred. The results supply a reliable base to develop a methodology for medium to long-term seasonal forecast.

Anaphylatoxins:From Supposed Toxin Anaphylactics to Effective Mediators of the Early Events of Inflammation

This review updates original data describing the experiments showing the complement origin of anaphylatoxins unexplainable submerged under the surface of the articles related to the subject. Next, recalls subsequent data describing the anaphylatoxins peptide nature and sequences, the cell receptors with which they interact and activate and the outcome of the cell responses. The review continues by highlighting the anaphylatoxin biological properties focusing on the unequivocal participation of these mediators in inflammation. The review concludes bringing data reinforcing the promising use of these peptides as molecular primers to create specific and efficient pharmacological antagonists.

The role of green manure nitrogen use by corn and sugarcane crops in Brazil

Three assays were developed from April 3, 1995 to October 10, 2005. The work with corn was conducted in a greenhouse, using velvet bean (Mucuna aterrima) and sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea) as green manure with 15N labeling of either shoots or roots, in two soils with contrasting textural classes. The mineralization of N from legume plants incorporated into the two soils was investigated too. This work included two green manures: velvet bean and sunn hemp, and the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) residues. Nitrogen from the velvet bean accounted for a greater proportion of the soil inorganic N;shoots were responsible for most of N accumulated. Common bean residues caused immobilization of inorganic N. The leguminous species added were intensively and promptly mineralized, preserving the soil native nitrogen. One hundred days after emergence of the corn, velvet bean provided higher accumulation of nitrogen in the soil, higher absorption by corn plants and accumulation in the aerial part. The green manure decomposition was more intense in the medium textured soil. In this soil, highest nitrogen losses were also observed. The sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) was cultivated for five years in the field and was harvested three times;15N recovery was evaluated in the first two harvests. The combination of inorganic fertilizer and green manure resulted in higher sugarcane yields than either N source applied separately;however, in the second cutting the yields were higher where sunn hemp was used than in plots with ammonium sulfate. The recovery of N by the first two consecutive harvests accounted for 19% to 21% of the N applied as sunn hemp and 46% to 49% of the N applied as ammonium sulfate. Very little inorganic N was present in the 0-40 cm soil layer with both N sources.

Water-spraying is regarded as an effective method to reduce the weight loss of product during vacuum cooling *** study aimed to investigate the effect of vacuum cooling factors on the weight loss of postharvest broccoli,and attempted to optimize the treatment conditions by simulated annealing(SA)*** algorithm based on simulated annealing meta-heuristic technique was developed to identify the optimum condition for vacuum cooling treatment of *** demonstrated that the SA algorithm could adjust well with the simulation of the broccoli cooling *** best condition was at 200 Pa of pressure,274 g broccoli,6% of water volume and 40 min processing *** this condition,a product with only 0.35% of weight loss and 1.48℃ final temperature was *** developed method may help to effectively control the weight loss during vacuum cooling process and reducing the economic loss.

Background:The mild cognitive impairment(MCI)stage among elderly individuals is very complex,and the level of diagnostic accu-racy is far from *** studies have tried to improve the’MCI due to Alzheimer’s disease(AD)’classification by further stratifying these patients into ***-related symptoms may play an important role in helping to better define the MCI stage in elderly ***:In this work,we explored functional and structural differences in the brains of patients with nondepressed MCI(nDMCI)and patients with MCI with depressive symptoms(DMCI),and we examined how these groups relate to AD atrophy patterns and cognitive ***:Sixty-five participants underwent MRI exams and were divided into four groups:cognitively normal,nDMCI,DMCI,and *** compared the regional brain volumes,cortical thickness,and white matter microstructure measures using diffusion tensor imaging among ***,we evaluated changes in functional connectivity using fMRI ***:In comparison to the nDMCI group,the DMCI patients had more pronounced atrophy in the hippocampus and ***,DMCI patients had asymmetric damage in the limbic-frontal white matter ***,two medial pos-terior regions,the isthmus of cingulate gyrus and especially the lingual gyrus,had high importance in the structural and functional differentiation between the two ***:It is possible to differentiate nDMCI from DMCI patients using MRI techniques,which may contribute to a better charac-terization of subtypes of the MCI stage.
