Rapid Differentiation of Closely Related Citrus Genotypes by Fluorescence Spectroscopy

The differentiation of closely related Citrus genotypes is a meticulous, laborious, and time-consuming task that involves the assessment of complex traits such as growth, tolerance to stress, photosynthetic efficiency, yield, and many others. Such a task is generally accomplished either by analyzing specific features of adult plants or by applying molecular markers to young trees. On one hand, only after plants start yielding can distinct genotypes be differentiated by comparing their fruit sizes, shapes, taste, and the number of seeds. On the other hand, molecular markers are expensive, and demand expertise and time for the analysis of a larger number of plants. For these reasons, the development of techniques that could assist in an early, quick and accurate differen-tiation of closely related Citrus varieties is of utmost importance. In this context, laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (LIFS) is a promising technique, since it is rapid, highly sensitive, and inexpensive. Previous studies showed that LIFS can differentiate a variety of sweet orange. However, this new study aimed to determine LIFS accuracy in the differentiation and grouping of very closely varieties of four Sunki mandarin selections: Comum, Florida, Tropical, and Maravilha. Furthermore we compared the results with ISSR and SSR molecular markers for the same varieties. LIFS technique distinguished the four selections with accuracy greater than 70%. Only with molecular markers was possible distinguishing clearly Tropical from Maravilha, but not Comum from Florida selections. In this way the results suggest that LIFS may be a sound tool for helping the identification of closely Citrus varieties.

Physical and Chemical Matrix Effects in Soil Carbon Quantification Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Advanced field methods of carbon (C) analysis should now be capable of providing repetitive, sequential measurements for the evaluation of spatial and temporal variation at a scale that was previously unfeasible. Some spectroscopy techniques, such as laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), have portable features that may potentially lead to clean and rapid alternative approaches for this purpose. The goal of this study was to quantify the C content of soils with different textures and with high iron and aluminum concentrations using LIBS. LIBS emission spectra from soil pellets were captured, and the C content was estimated (emission line of C (I) at 193.03 nm) after spectral offset and aluminum spectral interference correction. This technique is highly portable and could be ideal for providing the soil C content in a heterogeneous experiment. Dry combustion was used as a reference method, and for calibration a conventional linear model was evaluated based on soil textural classes. The correlation between reference and LIBS values showed r = 0.86 for medium-textured soils and r = 0.93 for fine-textured soils. The data showed that better correlation and lower error (14%) values were found for the fine-textured LIBS model. The limit of detection (LOD) was found to be 0.32% for medium-textured soils and 0.13% for fine-textured soils. The results indicated that LIBS quantification can be affected by the texture and chemical composition of soil. Signal treatment was shown to be very important for mitigation of these interferences and to improve quantification.

The use of biochar can have several effects on plant germination,depending on raw material,preparation method and application ***,the molecular mechanisms that lead to those results have yet to be *** aim of this research was to improve the understanding of these mechanisms by characterizing the metabolic effects of sugarcane bagasse biochar on soybean *** types of biochars were prepared by pyrolysis at 300℃(SCB300),400℃(SCB400)and 600℃(SCB600).Then,each one was mixed into sand at 1%,3%,5%(w/w)dose,*** experiment was performed in 8 days of incubation,when the number of germinated seeds and the average radicle length were *** evaluate the metabolome,the dry biomass(DB)was subjected to extraction with a mixture of methanol-d4 and D2O(1:1 v/v).The extracts were submitted to metabolomics analysis by Proton Nuclear Magnetic *** Relative Germination,Relative Average Radicle Growth and Germination Index increased in all treatments compared to *** the other hand,the DB increased in all treatments,except for SCB300,at doses of 1%and 3%w/*** metabolites(alanine,asparagine,acetic acid,citric acid,glycerol,fatty acids and sucrose)were identified and quantified in DB extracts as the most influential finding for the separation of *** together,these results strongly suggested that biochars accelerated the catabolism of triacylglycerols to sucrose and induced a slight osmotic stress.

Ballistic response of armour plates using Generative Adversarial Networks

It is important to understand how ballistic materials respond to impact from projectiles such that informed decisions can be made in the design process of protective armour systems. Ballistic testing is a standards-based process where materials are tested to determine whether they meet protection, safety and performance criteria. For the V50ballistic test, projectiles are fired at different velocities to determine a key design parameter known as the ballistic limit velocity(BLV), the velocity above which projectiles perforate the target. These tests, however, are destructive by nature and as such there can be considerable associated costs, especially when studying complex armour materials and systems. This study proposes a unique solution to the problem using a recent class of machine learning system known as the Generative Adversarial Network(GAN). The GAN can be used to generate new ballistic samples as opposed to performing additional destructive experiments. A GAN network architecture is tested and trained on three different ballistic data sets, and their performance is compared. The trained networks were able to successfully produce ballistic curves with an overall RMSE of between 10 and 20 % and predicted the V50BLV in each case with an error of less than 5 %. The results demonstrate that it is possible to train generative networks on a limited number of ballistic samples and use the trained network to generate many new samples representative of the data that it was trained on. The paper spotlights the benefits that generative networks can bring to ballistic applications and provides an alternative to expensive testing during the early stages of the design process.

An elasto-viscoplastic consistent tangent operator (CTO) concept-based implicit algorithm for nonlinear boundary element methods is presented. Both kinematic and isotropic strain hardening are considered. The elasto-viscoplastic radial return algorithm (RRA) and the elasto-viscoplastic CTO and its related scheme are developed. In addition, the limit cases (e.g. elastoplastic problem) of vis-coplastic RRA and CTO are discussed. Finally, numerical examples, which are compared with the latest FEM results of Ibrahimbegovic et al. and ABAQUS results, are provided.

BACKGROUND Takotsubo cardiomyopathy(TCM),or stress-induced cardiomyopathy,is associated with adverse *** data suggest that TCM occurring in orthotopic liver transplant(OLT)recipients is associated with elevated perioperative *** To characterize the predictors of TCM in OLT recipients,using a large,multicenter pooled electronic health *** A multi-institutional database(Explorys Inc,Cleveland,OH,USA),an aggregate of de-identified electronic health record data from 26 United States healthcare systems was surveyed.A cohort of patients with a Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine-Clinical Terms of“liver transplant”between 09/2015 and 09/2020 was ***,individuals who developed a new diagnosis of TCM following OLT were ***,the risk associations with TCM among this patient population were characterized using linear *** Between 09/2015 and 09/2020,of 37718540 patients in the database,38740(0.10%)had a history of OLT(60.6%had an age between 18-65 years,58.1%female).A new diagnosis of TCM was identified in 0.3%of OLT recipients(45.5%had an age between 18-65 years,72.7%female),compared to 0.04%in non-OLT patients[odds ratio(OR):7.98,95%confidence intervals:6.62-9.63,(P<0.0001)].OLT recipients who developed TCM,compared to those who did not,were more likely to be greater than 65 years of age,Caucasian,and female(P<0.05).There was also a significant association with cardiac arrhythmias,especially ventricular arrhythmias(P<0.0001).CONCLUSION TCM was significantly more likely to occur in LT recipients vs *** age,Caucasian ethnicity,female gender,and presence of arrhythmias were significantly associated with TCM in LT recipients.

Plant Proteins Are Smaller Because They Are Encoded by Fewer Exons than Animal Proteins

Protein size is an important biochemical feature since longer proteins can harbor more domains and therefore can display more biological functionalities than shorter proteins. We found remarkable differences in protein length, exon structure, and domain count among different phylo- genetic lineages. While eukaryotic proteins have an average size of 472 amino acid residues （aa）, average protein sizes in plant genomes are smaller than those of animals and fungi. Proteins unique to plants are -81 aa shorter than plant proteins conserved among other eukaryotic lineages. The smaller average size of plant proteins could neither be explained by endosymbiosis nor subcellular compartmentation nor exon size, but rather due to exon number. Metazoan proteins are encoded on average by -10 exons of small size [-176 nucleotides （nt）]. Streptophyta have on average only -5.7 exons of medium size （-230 nt）. Multicellular species code for large proteins by increasing the exon number, while most unicellular organisms employ rather larger exons （〉 400 nt）. Among subcellular compartments, membrane proteins are the largest （-520 aa）, whereas the smallest proteins correspond to the gene ontology group of ribosome （-240 aa）. Plant genes are encoded by half the number of exons and also contain fewer domains than animal proteins on average. Interestingly, endosymbiotic proteins that migrated to the plant nucleus became larger than their cyanobacterial orthologs. We thus conclude that plants have proteins larger than bacteria but smaller than animals or fungi. Compared to the average of eukaryotic species, plants have -34% more but -20% smaller proteins. This suggests that photosynthetic organisms are unique and deserve therefore special attention with regard to the evolutionary forces acting on their genomes and proteomes.
