Effects of Different Levels of Garlic Powder Incorporated in the Feed Enriched with Stylosanthes guianensis on Reproduction and Pre-Weaning Growth Performances of Cavies (Cavia porcellus)

In order to increase the productivity of the local cavies as a meat animal, a study was carried out between November 2021 and March 2022 at the Research and Experimental Farm, Animal Nutrition and Production Research Unit of the Faculty of Agronomy and Agricultural Sciences (FAAS) and the Microbiology and Anti-Microbial Research Unite of the University of Dschang on 72 cavies aged between 4 and 5 months and weighing an average of 450 ± 50 g produced on the farm, including 60 females and 12 males. The females were distributed according to a completely randomized factorial design in twelve (12) rearing boxes numbered G1 to G12, with 15 females per group distributed in 03 boxes and receiving iso-nitrogenated experimental diet (18% protein) R0 enriched with 20% of Stylosanthes guianensis (0% garlic powder), R0.25 (0.25% garlic powder), R0.50 (0.50% garlic powder) and R0.75 (0.75% garlic powder). Females were identified by numbered ear tags and mated with a sex ratio of 5 females for 1 male. Drinking water enriched with vitamin C (01 tablet of 240 mg in 1.5 liters of water) was served ad libitum and renewed daily. The males were removed after 31 days. A form was established to record the weight of each pregnant female, any abortions during gestation, the date of parturition and the date of birth of each newborn, as well as the number of live-born or stillborn pups. After parturition, the weights of female and newborn cavies were recorded weekly until the 3rd week. The number of cavies that died before weaning and the number of live weaned cavies were also recorded. Reproductive performance significantly increased (p 0.05) fertility rate and net fertility rate, litter size, birth viability rate, and pre-weaning viability rate with rations containing garlic powder, compared to the control ration, especially with the R0.50 ration. The stem barks of Prunus africana are used in the treatment of the benign prostate. Cameroon is one of the important exporters of the barks. Despite the important measures adopted in Cameroon for sustaining its harvesting, some many chalenges still remain. The objective of this work is to refine the forest management parameters in relation to P. africana in the regions of Adamaoua and the South-West by developing a volume rate which makes it possible to estimate the production for a new stem. The work took place in two phases: in the South-West in 2010 and in Adamaoua in 2011. Data collection used the semi-direct method, while the cubing equation was deduced by the multiple linear regression method. Two models for volume estimation and three models for mass prediction were developed. The predictive parameters retained are diameter, height of the bole and thickness of the bark. Results show that the average mass of the dry bark for a given P. africana tree species is 27.55 ± 14.44 kg and this varies according to the site. The strong adjusted coefficient of determination (adjusted R2) observed illustrates the reliability of the proposed models. These models provide a reliable tool that can be adopted as a standard in Cameroon for P. africana.

14-3-3 is a highly conserved acidic protein family, composed of seven isoforms in mammals. 14-3-3 protein caninteract with over 200 target proteins by phosphoserine-dependent and phosphoserine-independent manners. Little isknown about the consequences of these interactions, and thus are the subjects of ongoing studies. 14-3-3 controls cellcycle, cell growth, differentiation, survival, apoptosis, migration and spreading. Recent studies have revealed newmechanisms and new functions of 14-3-3, giving us more insights on this fascinating and complex family of *** all the seven isoforms, 14-3-3σ seems to be directly involved in human cancer. 14-3-3σ itself is subject to regulationby p53 upon DNA damage and by epigenetic deregulation. Gene silencing of 14-3-3σ by CpG methylation has beenfound in many human cancer types. This suggests that therapy-targeting 14-3-3σ may be beneficial for future cancertreatment.

Algae from Fresh and Brackish Waters, Côte d’Ivoire

The aim of this work is to study the diversity of phytoplanktonic from some fresh and brackish waters. The methodology employed consisted of sampling the organisms using the Van Dorn bottle at the surface (0.5 m) of fresh and sea waters from Container Terminal from San-Pedro Port Area (CTSP) during June and July 2021 and Ebrié Lagoon in June 2023. A total of 324 taxa were collected with 274 taxa for CTSP and 82 taxa for Ebrié Lagoon. The identified phyla were, in order of importance, the Bacillariophyta (151 taxa), Dinophyta (80 taxa), Euglenophyta (34 taxa), Chlorophyta (31 taxa), Chrysophyta (12 taxa), Cyanobacteria (11 taxa), Cryptophyta and Rhodophyta with 2 taxa respectively and Ochrophyta (1 taxon). In the CTSP, the species Prorocentrum lima and Prorocentrum micans have contributed to the highest number of the taxa during the first mission, but with low contribution during the second mission. At this mission, the contribution of the Dinophyta Protoperidinium quinquecorne and the Bacillariophyta Melosira spp., Coscinodiscus nodulifer, Thalassionema frauenfeldii and Thalassionema nitzschioides was revealed. The Ebrié Lagoon was characterized by the high contribution of the species Cyclotella meneghianana during the sampling mission. As a recommendation, we propose the monitoring in time and space of toxin-producing species and the evaluation of their toxins that could constitute a risk for the fishery, recreational and commercial activities, and the ecosystems studied providing important ecosystem and economic services.

Efficient search of compositional space for hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites via Bayesian optimization

Accelerated searches,made possible by machine learning techniques,are of growing interest in materials discovery.A suitable case involves the solution processing of components that ultimately form thin films of solar cell materials known as hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites(HOIPs).The number of molecular species that combine in solution to form these films constitutes an overwhelmingly large“compositional”space(at times,exceeding 500,000 possible combinations).Selecting a HOIP with desirable characteristics involves choosing different cations,halides,and solvent blends from a diverse palette of *** unguided search by experimental investigations or molecular simulations is prohibitively *** this work,we propose a Bayesian optimization method that uses an application-specific kernel to overcome challenges where data is scarce,and in which the search space is given by binary variables indicating whether a constituent is present or *** demonstrate that the proposed approach identifies HOIPs with the targeted maximum intermolecular binding energy between HOIP salt and solvent at considerably lower cost than previous state-of-the-art Bayesian optimization methodology and at a fraction of the time(less than 10%)needed to complete an exhaustive *** find an optimal composition within 15±10 iterations in a HOIP compositional space containing 72 combinations,and within 31±9 iterations when considering mixed halides(240 combinations).Exhaustive quantum mechanical simulations of all possible combinations were used to validate the optimal prediction from a Bayesian optimization *** paper demonstrates the potential of the Bayesian optimization methodology reported here for new materials discovery.

Characterization of Clay Materials and Performance Evaluation of Fired Clay Composites Made for Low-Cost Housing

This study deals with the physico-chemical, mineralogical and geotechnical characterization of alluvial clays from Batchenga in Cameroon with a view to their use as building materials for housing. The alluvial clay (***) was collected in the locality of Batchenga at the village Natchigal (4˚20'40''N and 11˚37'40''E at 378 m altitude) and was fired between 900˚C and 1100˚C. Characterization was performed by XRD, XRF, DTA/DTG, and firing tests. XRD, XRF, DTA/DTG infrared analysis methods were performed on these clays. The linear shrinkage, mechanical strengths, water absorption, porosity and density were measured on the fired products. The results obtained show that the major oxides are for the *** SiO2 (72.13%), Al2O3 (14.1%), Fe2O3 (4.45%) and for the ***: SiO2 (48.91%), Al2O3 (23.79%), Fe2O3 (9.54%). The fired products based on alluvial clay, present the flexural strength of 4.45 MPa at 900˚C and 6.80 MPa at 1100˚C. As for those based on lateritic clay, the flexural strength is 0.53 and 0.76 MPa respectively at 900 and 1100˚C. The porosity is 33.69% at 900˚C and 22.93% at 1100˚C for the alluvial clay and 39.55% at 900˚C and 36.01% for the lateritic clay at 1100˚C. Water absorption is 18% to 11.16% for alluvial clay and 22.43% to 21.16% for lateritic clay at 900˚C and 1100˚C respectively. These results suggest that alluvial clay and its firing products have better physico-chemical, geotechnical and mechanical characteristics regardless of the firing temperature of the manufactured products. The addition of degreaser is recommended to improve the mechanical performance of lateritic clay.

Non-pharmacological therapies for inflammatory bowel disease: Recommendations for self-care and physician guidance

We performed a scoping review on sought-after complementary therapies for patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD), specifically diet, physical activity and exercise(PA/E), and psychotherapy. We aim to update patients with IBD on therapies for self-care and provide physicians with guidance on how to direct their patients for the management of IBD. A search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PUBMED was completed in Sept 2016. Studies on diet, PA/E, or psychotherapy in patients with IBD were included. Medical Subject Heading terms and Boolean operators were used. The search was limited to full-text English articles describing an adult population. This review included 67 studies: Diet(n = 19); PA/E(n = 19); and psychotherapy(n = 29). We have made the following recommendations:(1) Diet: Consumption of diets rich in vegetables, fruit and soluble fiber may be beneficial in IBD. A trial of a low FODMAP diet can be considered in those patients with functional gastrointestinal symptoms. Restrictive diets are lacking in evidence and should be avoided;(2) PA/E: Regular lowmoderate intensity activity, including cardiovascular and resistance exercise, has been shown to improve quality of life(QOL) and may improve inflammation; and(3) psychotherapy: Therapies such as cognitive-behavioural interventions, mindfulness, hypnosis, and stress management have been shown to improve QOL, but evidence is limited on their impact on anxiety, depression, and disease activity. Overall, these complementary therapies are promising and should be used to treat patients with IBD from a more holistic perspective.

Measuring episodic abdominal pain and disability in suspected sphincter of Oddi dysfunction

AIM:To evaluate the reliability of an instrument that measures disability arising from episodic abdominal pain in patients with suspected sphincter of Oddi dysfunction(SOD).METHODS:Although several treatments have been utilized to reduce pain and associated disability,measurement tools have not been developed to reliably track *** pilot studies were conducted to assess test-retest reliability of a newly developed instrument,the recurrent abdominal pain intensity and disability(RAPID) *** RAPID score is a 90-d summation of days where productivity for various daily activities is reduced as a result of abdominal pain episodes,and is modeled after the migraine disability assessment instrument used to measure headache-related *** was administered by telephone on 2 consecutive occasions in 2 consenting populations with suspected SOD:a pre-sphincterotomy population(Pilot Ⅰ,n = 55) and a post-sphincterotomy population(Pilot Ⅱ,n = 70).RESULTS:The average RAPID scores for Pilots Ⅰ and Ⅱ were:82 d(median:81.5 d,SD:64 d) and 48 d(median:0 d,SD:91 d),*** concordance between the 2 assessments for both populations was very good:0.81 for the pre-sphincterotomy population and 0.95 for the post-sphincterotomy ***:The described pilot studies suggest that RAPID is a reliable instrument for measuring disability resulting from abdominal pain in suspected SOD patients.
