Elevated nitric oxide and 3',5' cyclic guanosine monophosphate levels in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis

AIm: To evaluate whether serum levels of nitric oxide (NO ·) and plasma levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGmP) and total glutathione (GSH) are altered in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis and to examine their correlation with the severity of liver ***: Twenty-six patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis were studied. Serum levels of NO · and plasma levels of cGmP and GSH were measured in 7 patients with compensated alcoholic cirrhosis (Child-Pugh A) and 19 patients with advanced cirrhosis (Child-Pugh B and C). The model for end-stage liver disease (mELD) score was evaluated. Sixteen healthy volunteers served as controls. Liver enzymes and creatinine levels were also ***: NO · and cGmP levels were higher in patients with Child-Pugh B and C cirrhosis than in Child-Pugh A cirrhosis or controls (NO ·: 21.70 ± 8.07 vs 11.70 ± 2.74; 21.70 ± 8.07 vs 7.26 ± 2.47 μmol/L, respectively; P mP: 20.12 ± 6.62 vs 10.14 ± 2.78; 20.12 ± 6.62 vs 4.95 ± 1.21 pmol/L, respectively; P mol/L, respectively; P mP levels in all patients with alcoholic cirrhosis. A significant negative correlation between reduced glutathione/glutathione disulfide and the mELD score was found in all cirrhotic ***: Our results suggest a role for oxidative stress in alcoholic liver cirrhosis, which is more significant in decompensated patients with higher levels of NO ·and cGmP and lower GSH levels than in compensated and control patients. Altered mediator levels in decompensated patients may influence the hemodynamic changes in and progression of liver disease.

Dear Editor, Flavonols are synthesized by flavonol synthase （FLS） enzymes （martens et al., 2010）. These compounds absorb UV-B light in the 280-320-nm region and their concentration increases in plants exposed to environmental abiotic and biotic stresses, including UV-B; consequently, flavonols are thought to act as UV-B filters （Agati et al., 2011）. It has been also suggested that these metabolites function as reactive oxygen species （ROS） scavengers, as they contain an OH- group in the 3-position of the flavonoid skeleton, which allows them to chelate metals, inhibiting the formation of free radicals and ROS accumula- tion, once formed （Agati et al., 2009）. For these reasons, it has been suggested that flavonols play uncharacterized roles in UV responses （Verdan et al., 2011）. Nevertheless, despite the fact that the role of flavonols in UV-B protection has been inferred, the protection conferred by flavonols on the target sites of UV-B-damage has not been directly proven in planta.

This retrospective single centre report of 36 patients with resectable pancreatic cancer who had neoadjuvant systemic chemotherapy,found that only 25(69%)of patients could undergo resection with a median overall survival of 34.4 months(1).They concluded that a short course of neoadjuvant chemotherapy without chemoradiation may improve patient selection prior to surgical resection(1).Whilst the notion that effective neoadjuvant therapy does not require chemoradiation is interesting this study demonstrates the weaknesses of retrospective *** in the treatment of pancreatic cancer has only taken place through well designed prospective randomized controlled trials.

While the association between obesity,type 2 diabetes(T2D)and the presence of steatosis has been established since the beginning of the last century(1),it was not until 1980 that the first references were made about a form of histologic liver lesion designated as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH).NASH is characterised by the presence of a variable degree of steatosis accompanied by lobular inflammatory infiltrate and hepatocellular damage with or without ***,the broader term of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)was accepted,which more accurately encompass the entire spectrum of lesions that appear in these patients(2).Ever since then,NAFLD has become progressively the primary cause of chronic liver disease in developed countries(3).

A grain-size correction for metal pollution indexes in river sediments

According to the List of Hazardous Substances of the Agency of the Toxic Substances and Disease Registry(ATSDR 2017), some metallic elements such as Pb or Cd are still considered as the most polluting elements in the world. These elements accumulate in sediments, and there are various methods available that differentiate lithogenic sources from anthropogenic sources. For that, the natural geochemical background is required, however, its definition is far from unanimous: it can be a global or local value,single or statistically estimated value, depending on the studies. Our study is focused on the Subae River in the state of Bahia, Northeastern Brazil, which was historically contaminated by lead metallurgy. The river sediments were sampled at 21 locations: one at the discharge point of the plant’s rainwater basin,ten upstream, and ten downstream. The total contents of Fe, Ti, mn, Pb, Zn, Cu, Cr, particle-size distribution, and organic matter were analyzed. The conventional geochemical indexes, i.e., the pollution degree(m Cd), pollution load index, and enrichment factor indicated contamination by Zn, Pb, Cr, and ***, a new enrichment factor is introduced, assuming that the sediments come from erosion of soils in the watershed. After obtaining the natural concentrations of metals in the clay, silt, and sand fractions of uncontaminated reference soils, we corrected the pollution indexes by calculating a new individual background in each sediment sample, according to its grain size distribution. This new approach provided more precise indexes in the assessment of sediment pollution, by highlighting higher contamination of Zn and Pb(around 50%) and at the same time the absence of Cr and Cu contamination, two metals not involved with the metallurgical activity.
