cAMP signaling and the control of Schwann cell fate： The ubiquitous second messenger cyclic adenosine monophosphate （cAMP） controls a variety of cellular responses in a cell type-specific and stimulus-de- pendent manner through an elaborate network of signaling intermedi- aries that connect stimulation of cell membrane receptors （typically G protein-coupled receptors, GPCRs） to transcription factor activation. Schwann cells （SCs） are highly responsive to cAMP throughout their lifespan, as extensive research has shown that SC survival, lineage spec- ification, proliferation and differentiation into myelin-forming cells require cAMP signaling.

As populations age, prevalence of Alzheimer＇s disease（AD） is rising. Over 100 years of research has provided valuable insights into the pathophysiology of the disease, for which age is the principal risk factor. However, in recent years, a multitude of clinical trial failures has led to pharmaceutical corporations becoming more and more unwilling to support drug development in AD. it is possible that dependence on the amyloid cascade hypothesis as a guide for preclinical research and drug discovery is part of the problem. Accumulating evidence suggests that amyloid plaques and tau tangles are evident in non-demented individuals and that reducing or clearing these lesions does not always result in clinical improvement. Normal aging is associated with pathologies and cognitive decline that are similar to those observed in AD, making differentiation of AD-related cognitive decline and neuropathology challenging. in this mini-review, we discuss the difficulties with discerning normal, age-related cognitive decline with that related to AD. We also discuss some neuropathological features of AD and aging, including amyloid and tau pathology, synapse loss, inflammation and insulin signaling in the brain, with a view to highlighting cognitive or neuropathological markers that distinguish AD from normal aging. it is hoped that this review will help to bolster future preclinical research and support the development of clinical tools and therapeutics for AD.

AiM： To study the association between nitrite and nitrosamine intake and gastric cancer （GC）, between meat and processed meat intake, GC and oesophageal cancer （OC）, and between preserved fish, vegetable and smoked food intake and GC. METHODS： in this article we reviewed all the published cohort and case-control studies from 1985-2005, and analyzed the relationship between nitrosamine and nitrite intake and the most important related food intake （meat and processed meat, preserved vegetables and fish, smoked foods and beer drinking） and GC or OC risk. Sixty-one studies, 11 cohorts and 50 case-control studies were included. RESULTS： Evidence from case-control studies supported an association between nitrite and nitrosamine intake with GC but evidence was insufficient in relation to OC. A high proportion of case-control studies found a positive association with meat intake for both tumours （11 of 16 studies on GC and 11 of 18 studies on OC）. A relatively large number of case-control studies showed quite consistent results supporting a positive association between processed meat intake and GC and OC risk （10 of 14 studies on GC and 8 of 9 studies on OC）. Almost all the case-control studies found a positive and significant association between preserved fish, vegetable and smoked food intake and GC. The evidence regarding OC was more limited. Overall the evidence from cohort studies was insufficient or more inconsistent than that from case-control studies.CONCLUSiON： The available evidence supports a positive association between nitrite and nitrosamine intake and GC, between meat and processed meat intake and GC and OC, and between preserved fish, vegetable and smoked food intake and GC, but is not conclusive.

in this paper, some issues related to design and analysis of real networked control systems （NCS） under the focus of the most likely region of stability are addressed. Such a system is cumbersome due to its inherent variable time delays, ranging from microseconds to hours. To show the influence of such huge variations in the control performance, a laboratory-scale luminosity system has been setup using the internet as part of the control loop with dominant time constant in the order of milliseconds. Proportional and integral （Pi） control strategies with and without explicit compensation for the time-delay variations were implemented using an event-driven controller. Using the well-known Monte Carlo method and subsequent analyses of time responses, it has been possible to identify the most likely region of stability. Some experimental results show the influence of the statistical parameters of the delays on the determination of the most likely regions of stability of the NCS and how these can be used in assessment and redesign of the control system. The experiments show that much larger delays than one sample period can be supported by real NCSs without becoming unstable.

Varicocele, the most important treatable cause of male infertility, is present in 15% of adult males, 35% of men with primary infertility, and 80% of men with secondary infertility. On the other hand, 80% of these men will not present infertility. Therefore, there is a need to differentiate a varicocele that is exerting a deleterious effect that is treatable from a ＂silent＂ varicocele. Despite the growing evidence of the cellular effects of varicocele, its underlying molecular mechanisms are still eluding. Proteomics has become a promising area to determine the reproductive biology of semen as well as to improve diagnosis of male infertility. This review aims to discuss the state-of-art in seminal plasma proteomics in patients with varicocele to discuss the challenges in undertaking these studies, as well as the future outlook derived from the growing body of evidence on the seminal proteome.

Perovskite-type oxides of LaMnO3 were synthesized by means of the sol-gel method, in the presence of citric acid as gelling agent. The precursors used were Mn（NO3）2·H2O, La2O3, and NaOH,mixed in the stoichiometric ratio to obtain perovskite materials. The obtained gel was heat-treated at 400, 600 and 800 ℃ respectively, for 6 h. X-ray diffraction and FT-iR spectroscopy were used to analyze the phase transformation as a function of temperature, and the Rietveld refinement was used in order to characterize the materials obtained structurally. The average crystallite size of the products was calculated from XRD data and the average particle size was measured from the TEM micrographs. At 600 ℃, the synthesized compound is well-crystallized, showcases a perovskite structure（Pm-3m space group）, and exhibits uniform and homogeneous hexagonally-shaped particles, with sizes in the 20-50 nm *** impedance measurements in the 20-2 × 10^6 Hz frequency range were carried out at different temperatures（26-115 ℃）, and the electrical conduction mechanism is discussed.

Background This study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of hypertonic saline (HS) inhalations for infant bronchiolitis, com-pared to normal saline inhalations or standard treatment without inhalations as controls. Methods The decision tree in the decision analysis was used to calculate the expected costs. Actual cost data were obtained from our retrospective case-control study on bronchiolitis treatment. The effectiveness of treatment, based on the hospitaliza-tion rate of those admitted to the emergency department and the length of stay (LOS) of those who were hospitalized, was collected from previous studies. For the effectiveness estimations, we made a meta-analysis summarizing the results of the meta-analysis of the Cochrane review in 2013 and the results of 10 studies published after it. Results The mean hospitalization rate was 24.7% in the HS inhalation group and 32.6% in the control group [risk ratio: 0.80, 95% confidence interval (Ci) 0.67–0.96] and the mean LOS was 3.736 (HS group) and 4.292 (controls) days (mean difference: ? 0.55 days, 95% Ci ? 0.96 to ? 0.15), respectively. The expected costs per patient, when both inpatients and outpatients were included, were €816 ($1111) in the HS inhalation group and €962 ($1310) in the control group. The expected costs per hospitalization, when only inpatients were included, were €2600 ($3540) in the HS inhalation group and €2890 ($3935) in the control group. Conclusions HS inhalations slightly reduced the expected hospitalization costs of infant bronchiolitis. However, the low effectiveness, rather than the cost, is the factor that will limit the use of HS inhalations in infant bronchiolitis.
