Quality assessment between calibrated highway safety manual safety performance functions and calibration functions for predicting crashes on freeway facilities

Crash prediction models are commonly used for network screening in highway safety management process,where potential impacts of highway safety treatments are *** Highway Safety Manual(HSM)provides crash prediction models for various types of highway facilities that are often referred to as safety performance functions(SPFs).Freeway facility SPFs in the HSM were developed using data gathered from the states of California,Maine,and *** applying these HSM-default SPFs to a local jurisdiction,the HSM recommends calibration of HSM-default SPFs or development of jurisdiction-specific SPFs to improve the accuracy of crash *** study first calibrated the HSM-default freeway SPFs and for further accuracy and comparison purposes calibration functions were developed using Kansas freeway *** performance of calibrated HSM-default SPFs was then compared with developed calibration functions concerning the accuracy in crash *** facility calibration dataset included521 freeway segments,351 entrance-related speed-change lanes,and 366 exit-related speed-change *** residual plots and several other goodness-of-fit measures were used to assess the quality of calibrated HSM-default SPFs and calibration *** functions fitted better compared to calibrated HSM-default SPFs for Kansas freeway *** methodology used in this study could be beneficial and practiced to any *** functions could be used as an alternative to jurisdiction-specific SPFs or a replacement for HSM-default SPFs,which are frequently used in comparing alternatives,in calculating economic benefits of project improvements,and in estimating economic effectiveness of crash reduction in highway safety-related decision making.

Estimating safety effectiveness of roadway improvements and countermeasures,using cross-sectional models,generally requires large amounts of data such as road geometric and traffic-related characteristics at road segment *** models do not consider all confounding crash contributory factors such as driving culture and environmental conditions at the segment level due to a lack of readily available *** may result in inaccurate models representing actual conditions at road segment levels,followed by erroneous estimations of safety *** minimize the effect of not including such variables,this study develops a new methodology to estimate safety effectiveness of roadway countermeasures,based on generalized linear mixed models,assuming zeroinflated Poisson distribution for the response,and adjusting for spatial autocorrelation using the spatial random *** Bayesian approach,with Integrated Nested Laplace Approximation,was used to make inference on this model with computational *** showed that incorporating a spatial random effect into the models provided better model fit than non-spatial models;hence,estimated safety effectiveness based on such models is more *** proposed approach is a methodological advancement in traffic safety,which allows evaluation of safety effectiveness or roadway improvements when data are not readily available.

Determination of an age in a particular tree species can be considered as a vital factor in forest *** this research we have introduced a novel scheme to determine the accurate age of the tree species in Sri *** is initially developed for the tree species called‘Hora’(Dipterocarpus zeylanicus)in wet zone of Sri *** the core samples are extracted and further analyzed by means of the different image processing techniques such as Gaussian kernel blurring,use of Sobel filters,double threshold analysis,Hough line tran sformation and *** operations such as rescaling,slicing and measuring are also used in line with image processing techniques to achieve the desired *** a Graphical user interface(GUI)is developed to cater for the user requirements in a user friendly *** has been found that the average growth ring identification accuracy of the proposed system is 93%and the overall average accuracy of detecting the age is 81%.Ultimately the proposed system will provide an insight and contributes to the forestry related activities and researches in Sri Lanka.

The demand for fresh water in Hambantota District, Sri Lanka is rapidly increasing with the enormous amount of ongoing development projects in the region. Nevertheless, the district experiences periodic water stress conditions due to seasonal precipitation patterns and scarcity of surface water ***, management of available groundwater resources is critical, to fulfil potable water requirements in the area. However, exploitation of groundwater should be carried out together with artificial recharging in order to maintain the long term sustainability of water resources. In this study, a GIS approach was used to delineate potential artificial recharge sites in Ambalantota area within Hambantota. Influential thematic layers such as rainfall, lineament, slope, drainage, land use/land cover, lithology, geomorphology and soil characteristics were integrated by using a weighted linear combination method. Results of the study reveal high to moderate groundwater recharge potential in approximately 49% of Ambalantota area.

t Coelomycetous fungi are an artificial taxonomic group which produce conidia inside a cavity *** comprise about,1000 genera and 7000 species,which can be endophytic,pathogenic or *** classification of coelomycetes was previously based on morphology,such as the shape of conidiomata and mode of conidiogenesis,while it was treated as a distinct group *** based taxonomic studies has been used to accommodate asexual fungi in a natural classification system,resolve generic boundaries of polyphyletic genera and species complexes,as well as establish asexual-sexual ***,most of genera lack sequence data,thus,morphology based identification is still important when introducing new genera or *** this paper we illustrate,describe,and provide taxonomic notes for 235 dematiaceous coelomycetous genera,including five new genera ***,Didymellocamarosporium,Melanocamarosporium,Melnikia and *** analyses of combined sequence data are provided to show placements of dematiaceous coelomycetes in Dothideomycetes,Leotiomycetes and ***-hundred and fifty-two(65%)of genera have sequence data,thus,their taxonomic placement in a natural classification system,is listed as an ***,83 genera still lack sequence data,hence,they are treated as Ascomycota,genera incertae *** addition,separate analyses are provided where better taxonomic resolution is needed.

Crash Severity Analysis of Single Vehicle Run-off-Road Crashes

Run-off-road crashes in the United States have become a major cause of serious injuries and fatalities. A significant portion of run-off-road crashes are single vehicle crashes that occur due to collisions with fixed objects and overturning. These crashes typically tend to be more severe than other types of crashes. Single vehicle run-off-road crashes that occurred between 2004 and 2008 were extracted from Kansas Accident Reporting System (KARS) database to identify the important factors that affected their severity. Different driver, vehicle, road, crash, and environment related factors that influence crash severity are identified by using binary logit models. Three models were developed to take different levels of crash severity as the response variables. The first model taking fatal or incapacitating crashes as the response variable seems to better fit the data than the other two developed models. The variables that were found to increase the probability of run-off-road crash severity are driver related factors such as driver ejection, being an older driver, alcohol involvement, license state, driver being at fault, medical condition of the driver;road related factors such as speed, asphalt road surface, dry road condition;time related factors such as crashes occurring between 6 pm and midnight;environment related factors such as daylight;vehicle related factors such as being an SUV, motorcycles, vehicle getting destroyed or disabled, vehicle maneuver being straight or passing;and fixed object types such as trees and ditches.

Ceria is widely used as a catalyst for soot combustion,but effects of Zr substitution on the reaction mechanism is *** present work elucidates effects of Zr substitution on soot combustion over cubic fluorite-structured *** nanostructured CeO_(2),Ce_(0.92)Zr_(0.08)O_(2),and Ce_(0.84)Zr_(0.16)O_(2)composed of 5-6 nm crystallites display T_(m-CO2)(the temperature at maximum CO_2 yield)at 383,355,and 375℃under 10 vol.%O_(2)/N_(2),*** size of agglomerate decreases from 165.5 to 51.9-57.3 nm,which is beneficial for the sootceria ***,Zr increases the amount of surface oxygen vacancies,generating more active oxygen(O_(2)^-and O^(-))for soot ***,the activities of Ce_(0.92)Zr_(0.08)O_(2)and Ce_(0.84)Zr_(0.16)O_(2)in soot combustion are better than that of CeO_(2).Although oxygen vacancies promote the migration of lattice O~(2-),the enriched surface Zr also inhibits the mobility of lattice O^(2-).Therefore,the T_(m-CO2)of Ce_(0.84)Zr_(0.1)6 O_(2)is higher than that of Ce_(0.92)Zr_(0.08)O_(2).Based on reaction kinetic study,soot in direct contact with ceria preferentially decomposes with low activation energy,while the oxidation of isolated soot occurs through diffusion with high activation *** obtained findings provide new understanding on the soot combustion over nanoceria.
