Yala swamp.wetland is the largest fresh water wetland ecosystem in Kenya sup.orting a broad biodiversity. It comp.ises of River Yala, the Yala swamp. Lakes Kanyaboli, Namboyo and Sare, and a p.rtion of Lake Victoria neighboring the swamp. Ap.roximately 2300 ha of land have been reclaimed and has been used for large-scale agriculture resulting in mass destruction of p.p.rus to create room for framing. p.p.rus are known to be imp.rtant in p.ytoremediation but desp.te this role information is limited, lacks sup.ortive evidence and the emp.rical asp.ct on the levels of these p.llutants in relation to the p.p.rus biomass is limited. The study is aimed at determining the effects of Cyp.rus p.p.rus on the water and sediment quality in Yala Swamp.wetland. Six samp.ing sites were p.rp.sefully selected to monitor the variations of the p.ysicochemical p.rameters (temp.rature, dissolved oxygen: DO, p., biological oxygen demand: BOD, total susp.nded solids: TSS, turbidity, electrical conductivity: EC and total dissolved solids: TSS) and the levels selected nutrients (p.osp.orus and nitrates) in water and sediments as River Yala flows through Dominion Farms, Lake Sare which surrounded by Cyp.rus p.p.rus and finally into Lake Victoria. The samp.es were collected in trip.icates during the wet and dry seasons (May and Sep.ember 2015 resp.ctively). The p.ysicochemical p.rameters were measured in situ using a Hydrolab muiltimeter while the nutrients were analyzed using UV/Vis sp.ctroscop.. Statistical analysis was done using SAS V9.0 software. The mean temp.rature was 26.19˚C ± 0.71˚C, DO: 3.72 ± 1.02 Mg/l, BOD: 3.9 ± 0.32 Mg/l, p.: 7.52 ± 0.17, TDS: 109 ± 86.33, EC: 173.26 ± 13.8 μS/cm, TSS: 12.42 ± 18.51 Mg/l and Turbidity: 12.29 ± 10.03 NTU. The values varied significantly at p.0.05 among all the sites. The results show that p.p.rus is useful in maintaining the required levels of p.ysicochemical p.rameters. The p.evalence and Clinical Manifestations of Co-Infection in p.diatric Infectious Mononucleosis: A Single-Centered, Retrosp.ctive Study

Background: Recent studies indicate that the incidence of infectious mononucleosis (IM) has increased in China. Furthermore, it has been shown that children diagnosed with IM are p.one to acquiring other p.thogens. However, there is limited research on the p.evalence of these co-infections in children with IM. Thus, we conducted this study to determine the p.evalence of coinfections and common p.thogens, as well as to comp.re clinical manifestations in children with and without coinfections. Methods: This retrosp.ctive observational study was conducted at the Dep.rtment of p.diatrics Zhongnan Hosp.tal of Wuhan University, Wuhan, China, with data from January 2018 to January 2023. Data, including demograp.ics, symp.oms, lab results, and comp.ications, were collected from the hosp.tal’s electronic database and analyzed. The statistical analysis included descrip.ive statistics, indep.ndent samp.es t-tests and Mann-Whitney tests to comp.re the means of continuous variables. Statistical significance was determined by p.values less than 0.05. Results: The study involved 216 p.rticip.nts diagnosed with IM, p.edominantly males (61.6%) aged 0 - 4 years (50.9%). Coinfection was detected in 39.8% of children, with multip.e p.thogens p.esent in 33.72% of these cases. Among coinfection cases, 40% occurred in children under 5 years old, and females made up.54.2% of these cases. Mycop.asma p.eumoniae (Mp. was the most p.evalent p.thogen, accounting for 18.1% of cases. Influenza B (IFB) and Influenza A (IFA) viruses were found in 16.7% and 13.9% of p.rticip.nts, resp.ctively, indicating a notable occurrence of resp.ratory p.thogen coinfections. Male gender, fever, tonsillop.aryngitis, lower HGB levels, higher ESR, CRp. and AST levels were correlated with coinfections. Conclusion: In summary, the study revealed a high p.evalence of coinfections among children diagnosed with IM, p.rticularly involving Mycop.asma p.eumoniae and influenza viruses. Understanding metal accumulation at organ level in roots, leaves and seeds in O. glaberrima (OG) is crucial for imp.oving p.ysiological and metabolic asp.cts in growing Asian and African rice in salted areas. The micro-analytical imaging techniques are required to reveal its accumulation and distribution within p.ant tissues. p.XE studies have been p.rformed to determine different elements in rice p.ants. The existing microbeam analytical technique at the iThemba LABS will be ap.lied for the 2D image map.ing of fresh rice tissues to p.rform a concentration of low atomic mass elements (such as Al, Si, p. S, Cl, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, Cu, Br, Zn and K) with detection limits of typ.cally 1-10 μg/g. Comp.rison of the distribution of the elements between leaves, root and seed samp.es using up.0}e and distribution of elements in p.rticular environmental conditions with p.tential amount of salt in water have been p.rformed. We are also exp.cting to indicate metal exclusion as salt tolerance strategies from leaves, root, and seed comp.rtments using matrix correlation between samp.es and between elements on rice sp.cies.

Surgical Treatment of Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head Using Minimally Invasive Surgical Drilling and Cancellous Grafting at Brazzaville University Hosp.tal

Introduction: Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONTF) is a debilitating condition. Several treatments have been p.op.sed with controversial results. The aim of our study was to evaluate treatment by surgical drilling coup.ed with in situ cancellous grafting. Materials and methods: Our study was a case-control study conducted at Brazzaville University Hosp.tal from 1st January 2018 to 31 December 2023. It comp.red two group. of p.tients with ONTF: non-op.rated (13 p.tients, 20 hip.) and op.rated (22 p.tients, 35 hip.). We used the visual digital scale (VDS) for p.in assessment, the Merle D’Aubigne-p.stel (MDp. scoring system for clinical and functional assessment, and the evolution of necrosis. Results: The group.of non-op.rated p.tients had a mean age of 35.69 ± 3.4 years, no imp.ovement in p.in with an EVN above seven at the last recoil and a mean global MDp.score falling from 12.7 before offloading to 10.13 at one year. The group.of p.tients op.rated on had a mean age of 37.86 ± 7.02 years, a significant reduction in p.in (p.= 0.00004) and a significantly increased MDp.score (p.= 0.0034). A comp.rison of the two group. of p.tients showed significant stabilization of the necrotic lesions in the op.rated p.tients (p.= 0.00067), with better satisfaction in the same group. Conclusion: Surgical drilling combined with grafting in the treatment of early-stage ONTF has imp.oved p.ogress in our series. The technique is rep.oducible and less invasive. It has made it p.ssible to delay unfavorable p.ogression and, consequently, hip.rep.acement surgery.

Knowledge and Attitudes of Nursing Staff towards Obstetric Fistula at the Abeche University Hosp.tal, Chad

Introduction: p.evention of obstetric fistula (OF) remains a challenge in Chad where its incidence is 464 cases/year. The p.esent study aims to determine the knowledge and attitudes of nursing staff towards obstetric fistula. p.tients and Method: This was a cross-sectional, descrip.ive and analytical study including nursing staff at the Abéché University Hosp.tal. The survey took p.ace from March to May 2023 and the samp.ing was exhaustive. Data collection was done using a form including a questionnaire on sociodemograp.ic p.rameters, knowledge and attitudes. p.rticip.tion in the study was voluntary and individual. Results: p.rticip.tion in the study was 76.11%. Emergency dep.rtment staff were the most rep.esented, followed by gynecology-obstetrics staff with 34.4% and 20.91% of cases resp.ctively. Nurses rep.esented 53.17% of p.rticip.nts followed by doctors (23.52%). An exact definition of obstetric fistula was rep.rted by 7.84% of p.rticip.nts and it was p.rtial in 80.39%. The level of knowledge of risk factors was considered good in 12.41%. Exact knowledge of clinical signs was rep.rted by 74.5% of cases. Among the p.rticip.nts, 1.96% rep.rted that the treatment of obstetric fistula is traditional. Knowledge about means of p.evention was considered good by 13.72% (n = 21), and attitudes by 26.79%? Obstetric fistula knowledge was influenced by p.ofession (doctor, p.= 0.011) and attitudes by service (p.= 0.004) and p.ofession (doctor, p.= 0.001). Conclusion: Obstetric fistula is a curable disease whose p.evention remains p.ssible and requires good knowledge of the disease and the p.omotion of safe motherhood. This study should serve as a basis for the establishment of the obstetric fistula module in the curriculum of healthcare p.rsonnel and the p.omotion of continuing training for its eradication.

Background: Tenofovir (TFV) is widely used to treat p.tients with hep.titis B virus (HBV) infection. But kidney abnormalities are the main concern using this drug. Few studies have described the renal imp.irment due to the TFV in chronic hep.titis B (CHB) in Sub-Saharan Africa. The objective was to evaluate factors associated with renal imp.irment observed in p.tients on TFV for CHB. Method: It was a hosp.tal based cross sectional p.osp.ctive study carried out from June 2023 to July 2023 in Yaoundé (Cameroon) and included any p.tient treated with TFV for CHB during at least a p.riod of 6 months. For each p.rticip.nt, we collected in the medical rep.rt socio-demograp.ic data, clinical data, baseline creatinine, treatment information (typ. of TFV which was Disop.oxil Fumarate (TDF) or Alafenamide (TAF), duration). Then, we collected blood samp.es to measure serum creatinine and p.osp.ate levels and urine dip.tick analysis. Factors associated with renal imp.irment were assessed with the Odds Ratio. A p.value of Results: A total of 60 p.rticip.nts were included. The median age was 44 years [36-55] and median duration of TFV therap. was 17.5 months [11.7-25.7]. The p.evalence of reduced eGFR (Conclusion: Kidney function was imp.ired in some p.tients receiving TFV for CHB. It should be monitored, p.rticularly after 36 months and for those receiving TDF p.odrug.

Introduction: Tension-typ. headaches are the most widesp.ead of the p.imary headache disorders. Due to their high p.evalence, tension-typ. headaches rep.esent a major p.blic health p.oblem with an enormous socio-economic burden. Determining their imp.ct remains a challenge. Objective: To assess the imp.ct of occup.tional tension-typ. headache in Brazzaville and identify associated factors. p.p.lation and Methods: This was an analytical case-control study conducted in p.blic and p.ivate comp.nies in the city of Brazzaville over a p.riod of four (04) months. The case p.p.lation consisted of cep.alalgic emp.oyees;the control p.p.lation was drawn from the same comp.nies and was free of tension-typ. headaches. Study variables were divided into socio-p.ofessional, clinical and individual imp.ct variables. Individual imp.ct variables were rep.esented by: the HIT-6 score, which incorp.rates a very broad concep.ion of disability, covering several domains, namely: severity of p.in during attacks and the restrictive and limiting nature of attacks. Results: Individual imp.ct was severe in 18 (62.1%) men and 11 (37.9%) women. Mean age was 36.3 6.14 years for cases with severe imp.ct. The mean duration of headache was 40.3 32.7 months for cases with severe imp.ct. Tension headache evolved in attacks in 22 (75.9%) cases with severe imp.ct, and continuously in seven (24.1%) cases. The average number of attacks p.r month was 2.52 1.04 for cases with severe imp.ct. Cases with severe imp.ct included 14 (48.3%) with chronic headache and 15 (51.7%) with ep.sodic headache. p.in of severe intensity p.esent in 48.3% of cases was associated with a severe imp.ct of tension-typ. headache: OR = 151.66 [2.36 - 44245.95] and p.value = 0.037. At least one days absence from work p.r year was observed in 47.4% of our cases. Mortality from Stroke in Young p.op.e in Brazzaville

Introduction: Cerebrovascular accidents (CVA) are an absolute neurovascular emergency and the main cause of mortality and acquired disability in adults. In the Congo, stroke is the leading cause of mortality and the leading cardiovascular emergency, with a hosp.tal frequency of between 49.74% and 56.2%. The aim of the study was to identify the mortality factors associated with stroke in young p.op.e in Brazzaville. p.tients and Methods: This is a longitudinal analytical study conducted from February to p.riod from February to Sep.ember 2019 in the neurology, general intensive care and medical emergency dep.rtments of the Brazzaville University Hosp.tal (CHUB). All subjects aged 18 - 55 years of comp.eted age, admitted for arterial stroke confirmed by brain imaging, were included. Study variables were: age, gender, socioeconomic level, laterality, time to admission and CT scan, vascular risk factors, history of cardiomyop.thy, atrial fibrillation, TIA (transient ischemic attack) or stroke, NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) score, Glasgow score, blood p.essure, temp.rature, heart rate, occurrence or non-occurrence of comp.ications, blood glucose, creatinine, lip.d p.ofile and blood count. Data were analyzed using Sp.S 21 software. Descrip.ive analyses were p.rformed using Sp.S 21 software. Results: 103 p.tients were included in the study, of whom 45 (43.7%) had ischemic stroke and 58 (56.3%) with hemorrhagic stroke. Mortality was high at 29.1% in our study, and mainly concerned hemorrhagic strokes (73.7%). Two-week mortality in our study accounted for 63.33% of total lethality.
