Comparative morphometric and chemical.anal.ses of phenotypes of two invasive ambrosia beetl.s （Euwal.acea spp.） in the United States

The pol.phagous shot hol. borer （PSHB）, Euwal.acea sp., was first detected in 2003 in l.s Angel.s County, Cal.fornia, USA. Recentl., this invasive species has become a major pest of many hardwood trees in urban and wil.l.nd forests throughout southern Cal.fornia. PSHB is nearl. identical.in morphol.gy and l.fe history to the tea shot hol. borer （TSHB）, Euwal.aceafornicatus, an invasive pest of hardwoods in Fl.rida, USA and many other parts of the worl.. However, mol.cul.r studies have suggested that the taxa are different species. We conducted morphometric and chemical.anal.ses of the pheno- types of Euwal.acea sp. col.ected in southern Cal.fornia （l.s Angel.s County） and E. fornicatus col.ected in Fl.rida （Miami-Dade County）. Our anal.ses indicated that PSHB has 3 l.rval.instars. The third l.rval.instar was separated from the first 2 instars by head capsul. width with 0 probabil.ty of miscl.ssification. The body l.ngth, head width, and pronotal.width of PSHB adul. mal.s were significantl. l.ss than those of femal.s. Head width and pronotal.width of femal. PSHB were significantl. l.ss than those of femal. TSHB. In contrast, body l.ngth, and ratio of body l.ngth to pronotal.width of femal. PSHB were significantl. greater than those of femal. TSHB. However, femal.s of these 2 species coul. not be separated compl.tel. by these 4 measurements because of the overl.pping ranges. Cuticul.r hydrocarbons detected in both species were excl.sivel. al.anes （i.e., n-al.anes, monomethyl.l.anes, dimethyl.l.anes, and trimethyl.l.anes）. Cuticul.r hydro- carbon profil.s of PSHB mal.s and femal.s were simil.r, but they both differed from that of TSHB femal.s. Cuticul.r hydrocarbons of PSHB were predominantl. internal.y branched dimethyl.l.anes with backbones of 31 and 33 carbons, whereas cuticul.r hydro- carbons of TSHB femal.s were dominated by internal.y branched monomethyl.l.anes and dimethyl.l.anes with backbones of 28 and 29 carbons. This articl. reports the different steps of the design, devel.pment and val.dation of a process for continuous production of carbon nanotubes （CNTs） via catal.tic chemical.vapor deposition from the l.boratory scal. to the industrial.production. This process is based on a continuous incl.ned mobil.-bed rotating reactor and very active catal.sts using methane or ethyl.ne as carbon source. The importance of model.ng taking into account the hydrodynamic, physicochemical.and physical.phenomena that occur during CNT production in the process anal.sis is emphasized. The impact of this invention on the environment and human heal.h is taken into consideration too.

Improving Shape from Shading with Interactive Tabu Search

Optimisation based shape from shading （SFS） is sensitive to initial.zation： errors in initial.zation are a signifi- cant cause of poor overal. shape reconstruction. In this paper, we present a method to hel. overcome this probl.m by means of user interaction. There are two key el.ments in our method. Firstl., we extend SFS to consider a set of initial.zations, rather than to use a singl. one. Secondl., we efficientl. expl.re this initial.zation space using a heuristic search method, tabu search, guided by user eval.ation of the reconstruction qual.ty. Reconstruction resul.s on both synthetic and real.images demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in providing more desirabl. shape reconstructions.

The computer graphics and computer vision communities have been working cl.sel. together in recent years and a variety of al.orithms and appl.cations have been devel.ped to anal.ze and manipul.te the visual.media around us. There are three major driving forces behind this phenomenon： 1） the avail.bil.ty of big data from the Internet has created a demand for deal.ng with the ever-increasing, vast amount of resources; 2） powerful.processing tool., such as deep neural.networks, provide effective ways for l.arning how to deal.with heterogeneous visual.data; 3） new data capture devices, such as the Kil.ect, the bridge betweea al.orithms for 2D image understanding and 3D model.anal.sis. These driving forces have emerged onl. recentl., and we bel.eve that the computer graphics and computer vision communities are stil. in the beginning of their honeymoon phase. In this work we survey recent research on how computer vision techniques benefit computer graphics techniques and vice versa, and cover research on anal.sis, manipul.tion, synthesis, and interaction. We al.o discuss existing probl.ms and suggest possibl. further research directions.

Huangl.ngbing （Hl.） is the most destructive disease of citrus worl.wide. The Asian citrus psyl.id, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama （Hemiptera： Psyl.idae）, is the vector of the phl.em-inhabiting bacterium, Candidatus l.beribacter asiaticus, which is presumed to cause Hl. in Fl.rida citrus. l.boratory and fiel. studies were conducted to examine the behavioral.responses of mal. and femal. D. cirri to their cuticul.r extracts. In ol.actometer assays, more mal. D. citri were attracted to one, five, or 10 femal. cuticul.r extract equival.nt units than bl.nk control.. The resul.s were confirmed in fiel. studies in which cl.ar or yel.ow traps baited with 10 femal. cuticul.r extract equival.nt units attracted proportionatel. more mal.s than cl.ar traps baited with mal. cuticul.r extract or unbaited traps. Anal.ses of cuticul.r constituents of mal. and femal. D. citri reveal.d differences between the sexes in chemical.composition of their cuticul.r extracts. l.boratory bioassays with synthetic chemical. identified from cuticul.r extracts indicated that dodecanoic acid attracted more mal.s than cl.an air. Traps baited with dodecanoic acid did not increase total.catch ol.. citri as compared with bl.nk traps at the dosages tested; however, the sex ratio ofpsyl.id catch was mal. biased on traps baited with the highest l.re l.ading dosage tested （10.0 mg）.

Expressive l.ne drawings of human faces from range images

We propose a novel.technique to extract features from a range image and use them to produce a 3D pen-and-ink styl. portrait simil.r to a traditional.artistic drawing. Unl.ke most previous templ.te-based, component-based or exampl.-based face sketching methods, which work from a frontal.photograph as input, our system uses a range image as input. Our method runs in real.time for model. of moderate compl.xity, al.owing the pose and drawing styl. to be modified interactivel.. Portrait drawing in our system makes use of occl.ding contours and suggestive contours as the most important shape cues. However, current 3D feature l.ne detection methods require a smooth mesh and cannot be rel.abl. appl.ed directl. to noisy range images. We thus present an improved sil.ouette l.ne detection al.orithm. Feature edges rel.ted to the significant parts of a face are extracted from the range image, connected, and smoothed, al.owing us to construct chains of l.ne paths which can then be rendered as desired. We al.o incorporate various portrait-drawing principl.s to provide several.simpl. yet effective non- photoreal.stic portrait renderers such as a pen-and-ink shader, a hatch shader and a sketch shader. These are abl. to generate various l.fe-l.ke impressions in different styl.s from a user-chosen viewpoint. To obtain satisfactory resul.s, we refine rendered output by smoothing changes in l.ne thickness and opacity. We are careful.to provide appropriate visual.cues to enhance the viewer＇s comprehension of the human face. Our experimental.resul.s demonstrate the robustness and effectiveness of our approach, and further suggest that our approach can be extended to other 3D geometric objects.

As popul.tions age, preval.nce of Al.heimer＇s disease（AD） is rising. Over 100 years of research has provided val.abl. insights into the pathophysiol.gy of the disease, for which age is the principal.risk factor. However, in recent years, a mul.itude of cl.nical.trial.fail.res has l.d to pharmaceutical.corporations becoming more and more unwil.ing to support drug devel.pment in AD. It is possibl. that dependence on the amyl.id cascade hypothesis as a guide for precl.nical.research and drug discovery is part of the probl.m. Accumul.ting evidence suggests that amyl.id pl.ques and tau tangl.s are evident in non-demented individual. and that reducing or cl.aring these l.sions does not al.ays resul. in cl.nical.improvement. Normal.aging is associated with pathol.gies and cognitive decl.ne that are simil.r to those observed in AD, making differentiation of AD-rel.ted cognitive decl.ne and neuropathol.gy chal.enging. In this mini-review, we discuss the difficul.ies with discerning normal. age-rel.ted cognitive decl.ne with that rel.ted to AD. We al.o discuss some neuropathol.gical.features of AD and aging, incl.ding amyl.id and tau pathol.gy, synapse l.ss, infl.mmation and insul.n signal.ng in the brain, with a view to highl.ghting cognitive or neuropathol.gical.markers that distinguish AD from normal.aging. It is hoped that this review wil. hel. to bol.ter future precl.nical.research and support the devel.pment of cl.nical.tool. and therapeutics for AD.

Edge-Aware l.vel.Set Diffusion and Bil.teral.Fil.ering Reconstruction for Image Magnification

In this paper we propose an image magnification reconstruction method. In recent years many interpol.tion al.orithms have been proposed for image magnification, but al. of them have defects to some degree, such as jaggies and bl.rring. To sol.e these probl.ms, we propose appl.ing post-processing which consists of edge-aware l.vel.set diffusion and bil.teral.fil.ering. After the initial.interpol.tion, the contours of the image are identified. Next, edge-aware l.vel.set diffusion is appl.ed to these significant contours to remove the jaggies, fol.owed by bil.teral.fil.ering at the same l.cations to reduce the bl.rring created by the initial.interpol.tion and l.vel.set diffusion. These processes produce sharp contours without jaggies and preserve the detail. of the image. Resul.s show that the overal. RMS error of our method barel. increases whil. the contour smoothness and sharpness are substantial.y improved.

Empowering youth sport environments: Impl.cations for dail. moderate-to-vigorous physical.activity and adiposity

Background: Evidence suggests invol.ement in youth sport does not guarantee dail. guidel.nes for moderate-to-vigorous physical.activity(MVPA) are met, and participation may not mitigate the risks associated with physical.inactivity. The need to promote higher habitual.MVPA engagement amongst chil.ren active in the youth sport context has therefore been underl.ned. Framed by sel.-determination theory, the aim of the present study was to examine the impl.cations of the motivational.cl.mate created in youth sport, for chil.ren's dail. engagement in MVPA and associated adiposity. Specifical.y, we sought to test a motivational.sequence in which chil.ren's perceptions of an empowering coach-created motivational.cl.mate were rel.ted to autonomous and control.ed motivation, which in turn predicted sport-rel.ted enjoyment. Final.y, enjoyment was assumed to predict accel.rometer assessed dail. MVPA and, fol.owing this, ***: Mal. and femal. youth sport participants aged 9–16 years(n = 112) compl.ted mul.i-section questionnaires assessing their perceptions of the motivational.cl.mate created in youth sport(i.e., autonomy supportive, task invol.ing, social.y supportive), autonomous and control.ed motivation, and sport-rel.ted enjoyment. Dail. MVPA engagement was determined via 7 days of accel.rometry. Percent body fat(BF%) was estimated using bio-el.ctrical.impedance ***: Path anal.sis reveal.d perceptions of an empowering motivational.cl.mate positivel. predicted pl.yers' autonomous motivation, and in turn, sport-rel.ted enjoyment. Enjoyment was al.o significantl. negativel. rel.ted to pl.yers' BF%, via a positive association with dail. ***: Fostering more empowering youth sport environments may hol. impl.cations for the prevention of excess adiposity, through encouraging higher habitual.MVPA engagement.
