Removal of boric acid from seawater and wastewater using reverse osmosis membrane technologies is imperative and yet remains inadequately addressed by current commercial *** research efforts performed post-modification of reverse osmosis membranes to enhance boron rejection,which is usually accompanied by substantial sacrifice in water *** study delves into the surface engineering of low-pressure reverse osmosis membranes,aiming to elevate boron removal efficiency while maintaining optimal salt rejection and water *** were modified by the self-polymerization and co-deposition of dopamine and polystyrene sulfonate at varying ratios and *** surfaces became smoother and more hydrophilic after *** optimum membrane exhibited a water permeability of 9.2±0.1 L·m^(-2)·h^(-1)·bar^(-1),NaCl rejection of 95.8%±0.3%,and boron rejection of 49.7%±0.1% and 99.6%±0.3% at neutral and alkaline pH,*** water permeability is reduced by less than 15%,while the boron rejection is 3.7 times higher compared to the blank *** research provides a promising avenue for enhancing boron removal in reverse osmosis membranes and addressing water quality concerns in the desalination process.

BACKGROUND Management of single small hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is straightforward with curative outcomes achieved by locoregional therapy or *** transplantation is often considered for multiple small or single large *** of two small HCC whether presenting synchronously or sequentially is less *** To define the outcomes of patients presenting with two small *** Retrospective review of HCC databases from multiple institutions of patients with either two synchronous or sequential HCC≤3 cm between january 2000 and March *** outcomes were overall survival(OS)and transplant-free survival(TFS).RESULTS 104 patients were identified(male n=89).Median age was 63 years(interquartile range 58-67.75)and the most common aetiology of liver disease was hepatitis C(40.4%).59(56.7%)had synchronous HCC and 45(43.3%)had sequential.36 patients died(34.6%)and 25 were transplanted(24.0%).1,3 and 5-year OS was 93.0%,66.1% and 62.3% and 5-year post-transplant survival was 95.8%.1,3 and 5-year TFS was 82.1%,45.85% and 37.8%.When synchronous and sequential groups were compared,OS(1,3 and 5 year synchronous 91.3%,63.8%,61.1%,sequential 95.3%,69.5%,64.6%,P=0.41)was similar but TFS was higher in the sequential group(1,3 and 5 year synchronous 68.5%,37.3% and 29.7%,sequential 93.2%,56.6%,48.5%,P=0.02)though this difference did not remain during multivariate *** TFS in patients presenting with two HCC≤3 cm is poor regardless of the timing of the second *** patients presenting with two small HCC should be considered for transplantation.

Optical tweezers have proved to be a powerful tool with a wide range of *** gradient force plays a vital role in the stable optical trapping of *** scalar method is convenient and effective for analyzing the gradient force in traditional optical ***,when the third-order nonlinear effect of the nano-object is stimulated,the scalar method cannot adequately present the optical response of the metal nanoparticle to the external optical ***,we propose a theoretical model to interpret the nonlinear gradient force using the vector *** combining the optical Kerr effect,the polarizability vector of the metallic nanoparticle is derived.A quantitative analysis is obtained for the gradient force as well as for the optical potential *** vector method yields better agreement with reported experimental *** suggest that this method could lead to a deeper understanding of the physics relevant to nonlinear optical trapping and binding phenomena.

This paper presents the first-ever investigation of Menger fractal cubes'quasi-static compression and impact *** cubes with different void ratios were 3D printed using polylactic acid(PLA)with dimensions of 40 mm×40 mm×40 *** different orders of Menger cubes with different void ratios were considered,namely M1 with a void ratio of 0.26,M2 with a void ratio of 0.45,and M3with a void ratio of ***-static Compression tests were conducted using a universal testing machine,while the drop hammer was used to observe the behaviour under impact *** fracture mechanism,energy efficiency and force-time histories were *** the structured nature of the void formation and predictability of the failure modes,the Menger geometry showed some promise compared to other alternatives,such as foams and *** the increasing void ratio,the Menger geometries show force-displacement behaviour similar to hyper-elastic materials such as rubber and *** third-order Menger cubes showed the highest energy absorption efficiency compared to the other two geometries in this *** findings of the present work reveal the possibility of using additively manufactured Menger geometries as an energy-efficient system capable of reducing the transmitting force in applications such as crash barriers.

Mathematical modeling of anaerobic digestion is a powerful tool to predict gas yields and optimize the *** Anaerobic Digestion Model No.1(ADM1)is a widely implemented model for this ***,modeling full-scale biogas plants is challenging due to the extensive substrate and parameter characterization *** study describes the modification of the ADM1 through a simplification of individual process phases,characteristic components and required ***,the ability of the simplified model to simulate the co-digestion of grass silage and cattle slurry was evaluated using data from a full-scale biogas *** impacts of substrate composition(crude carbohydrate,protein and lipid concentration)and variability of carbohydrate degradability on simulation results were assessed to identify the most influential *** indicated that the simplified version was able to depict biogas and biomethane production with average model efficiencies,according to the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency(NSE)coefficient,of 0.70 and 0.67,respectively,and was comparable to the original ADM1(average model efficiencies of 0.71 and 0.63,respectively).The variability of crude carbohydrate,protein and lipid concentration did not significantly impact biogas and biomethane output for the data sets *** contrast,carbohydrate degradability seemed to explain much more of the variability in the biogas and methane ***,the application of simplified models provides a reliable basis for the process simulation and optimization of full-scale agricultural biogas plants.
