Plants perceive and respond to environmental stresses with complex mechanisms that are often associ- ated with the activation of antioxidant defenses. A genetic screen aimed at isolating oxidative stress-tolerant lines of Arabidopsis thaliana has identified oxtl, a line that exhibits improved tolerance to oxidative stress and elevated temperature but displays no apparent deleterious growth effects under non-stress conditions. Oxtl harbors a muta- tion that arises from the altered expression of a gene encoding adenine phosphoribosyltransferase （APT1）, an enzyme that converts adenine to adenosine monophosphate （AMP）, indicating a link between purine metabolism, whole-plant growth responses, and stress acclimation. The oxtl mutation results in decreased APT1 expression that leads to reduced enzymatic activity. Correspondingly, oxtl plants possess elevated levels of adenine. Decreased APT enzyme activity dir- ectly correlates with stress resistance in transgenic lines that ectopically express APT1. The metabolic alteration in oxtl plants also alters the expression of several antioxidant defense genes and the response of these genes to oxidative chal- lenge. Finally, it is shown that manipulation of adenine levels can induce stress tolerance to wild-type plants. Collectively, these results show that alterations in cellular adenine levels can trigger stress tolerance and improve growth, leading to increases in plant biomass. The results also suggest that adenine might play a part in the signals that modulate responses to abiotic stress and plant growth.

Background Owing to complex treatment,critically ill children may experience alterations in their vital parameters.We investigated whether such hemodynamic alterations were temporally and causally related to drug therapy.Methods In a university pediatric intensive care unit,we retrospectively analyzed hemodynamic alterations defined as values exceeding the limits set for heart rate(HR)and blood pressure(BP).For causality assessment,we used the World Health Organization–Uppsala Monitoring Center(WHO–UMC)system,which categorizes the probability of causality as“certain,”“probable,”“possible,”and“unlikely.”Results Of 315 analyzed patients with 43,200 drug prescriptions,59.7%experienced at least one hemodynamic alteration;39.0%were affected by increased HR,19.0%by decreased HR,18.1%by increased BP,and 16.2%by decreased BP.According to drug information databases,83.9%of administered drugs potentially lead to hemodynamic alterations.Overall,88.3%of the observed hemodynamic alterations had a temporal relation to the administration of drugs;in 80.2%,more than one drug was involved.Based on the WHO–UMC system,a drug was rated as a“probable”causing factor for only 1.4%of hemodynamic alterations.For the remaining alterations,the probability ratings were lower because of multiple potential causes,e.g.,several drugs.Conclusions Critically ill children were frequently affected by hemodynamic alterations.The administration of drugs with potentially adverse effects on hemodynamic parameters is often temporally related to hemodynamic alterations.Hemodynamic alterations are often multifactorial,e.g.,due to administering multiple drugs in rapid succession;thus,the influence of individual drugs cannot easily be captured with the WHO–UMC system.

The relationship and the mutual benefits of timekeeping and Global Navigation Satellite Systems(GNSS)are reviewed,showing how each field has been enriched and will continue to progress,based on the progress of the other field.The role of GNSSs in the calculation of Coordinated Universal Time(UTC),as well as the capacity of GNSSs to provide UTC time dissemination services are described,leading now to a time transfer accuracy of the order of 1-2 ns.In addition,the fundamental role of atomic clocks in the GNSS positioning is illustrated.The paper presents a review of the current use of GNSS in the international timekeeping system,as well as illustrating the role of GNSS in disseminating time,and use the time and frequency metrology as fundamentals in the navigation service.

This paper deals with the homogenization of a class of nonlinear elliptic problems with quadratic growth in a periodically perforated domain. The authors prescribe a Dirichlet condition on the exterior boundary and a nonhomogeneous nonlinear Robin condition on the boundary of the holes. The main difficulty, when passing to the limit, is that the solution of the problems converges neither strongly in L^2(Ω) nor almost everywhere in Ω. A new convergence result involving nonlinear functions provides suitable weak convergence results which permit passing to the limit without using any extension operator.Consequently, using a corrector result proved in [Chourabi, I. and Donato, P., Homogenization and correctors of a class of elliptic problems in perforated domains, Asymptotic Analysis, 92(1), 2015, 1–43, DOI: 10.3233/ASY-151288], the authors describe the limit problem, presenting a limit nonlinearity which is different for the two cases, that of a Neumann datum with a nonzero average and with a zero average.

An intriguing question in behavioral biology is whether consistent individual differences （calledanimal personalities） relate to variation in cognitive performance because commonly measuredpersonality traits may be associated with risk-reward trade-offs. Social insects, whose learningabilities have been extensively characterized, show consistent behavioral variability, both at colonyand at individual level. We investigated the possible link between personality traits and learningperformance in the carpenter ant Camponotus aethiops. Exploratory activity, sociability, and ag-gression were assessed twice in ant foragers. Behaviors differed among individuals, they werepartly repeatable across time and exploratory activity correlated positively with aggression.Learning abilities were quantified by differential conditioning of the maxilla-labium extension re-sponse, a task that requires cue perception and information storage. We found that exploratory ac-tivity of individual ants significantly predicted learning performance：＂active-explorers＂ wereslower in learning the task than ＂inactive-explorers＂. The results suggest for the first time a link be-tween a personality trait and cognitive performance in eusocial insects, and that the underlying in-dividual variability could affect colony performance and success.

Three members of the angiopoietin-like(ANGPTL) protein family-ANGPTL3, ANGPTL4 and ANGPTL8-are important regulators of plasma lipoproteins. They inhibit the enzyme lipoprotein lipase, which plays a key role in the intravascular lipolysis of triglycerides present in some lipoprotein classes. This review focuses on the role of ANGPTL3 as emerged from the study of genetic variants of Angptl3 gene in mice and humans. Both loss of function genetic variants and inactivation of Angptl3 gene in mice are associated with a marked reduction of plasma levels of triglyceride and cholesterol and an increased activity of lipoprotein lipase and endothelial lipase. In humans with ANGPTL3 deficiency, caused by homozygous loss of function(LOF) variants of Angptl3 gene, the levels of all plasma lipoproteins are greatly reduced. This plasma lipid disorder referred to as familial combined hypolipidemia(FHBL2) does not appear to be associated with distinct pathological manifestations. Heterozygous carriers of LOF variants have reduced plasma levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides and are at lower risk of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, as compared to non-carriers. These observations have paved the way to the development of strategies to reduce the plasma level of atherogenic lipoproteins in man by the inactivation of ANGPTL3, using either a specific monoclonal antibody or anti-sense oligonucleotides.
