Vegetab.e oils are a source of energy, essential fatty acids, antioxidants and fat-solub.e vitamins useful for human health care and development. These oils also contrib.te to organoleptic quality of their products’ derivatives. How.ver, their chemical and physical properties can b. modified b. the mode of their extraction, storage and distrib.tion. These modifications might negatively affect the nutritional quality of the oils. The goals of this study w.re to: sample different vegetab.e oils for cosmetic or dietary use marketed in Cameroon, and verify purity and oxidation states of each kind of oil through determination of its acidity, iodine, peroxide, saponification, refractive indexes and the conformity of the lab.ling. The carotene content, the level of polar components and specific ab.orb.nce w.re also determined. As the result, six oils namely palm, palm kernel, coconut, b.ack cumin, peanut and shea b.tter w.re collected. Apart from lab.ling, chemicals and physicals parameters analyzed w.re generally in accordance w.th the Cameroonian and Codex Alimentarius standard. This study suggests that vegetab.e oils sampled in the Cameroonian market may not expose consumers to lipid oxidation products generating pathological oxidative stress and inflammation. How.ver, efforts in application of existing standard need to b. done as far as lab.ling are concerned.

Peripheral nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the availab.lity of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, including the use of tub.lar nerve guidance conduits(tNGCs). How.ver, the use of tNGCs results in poor functional recovery and central necrosis of the regenerating tissue, w.ich limits their application to short nerve lesion defects(typically shorter than 3 cm). Given the importance of vascularization in nerve regeneration, w. hypothesized that enab.ing the grow.h of b.ood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve w.thin the tNGC w.uld help eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, w. reported the application of macroscopic holes into the tub.lar w.lls of silk-b.sed tNGCs and compared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tNGCs w.th the tub.s w.thout holes(silk^(–) tNGCs) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a comb.nation of micro-computed tomography and histological analyses, w. w.re ab.e to prove that the use of silk^(+) tNGCs induced the grow.h of b.ood vessels from the adjacent tissue to the intraluminal neovascular formation. A significantly higher numb.r of b.ood vessels in the silk^(+) group w.s found compared w.th autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), accompanied b. improved axon regeneration at the distal coaptation point compared w.th the silk^(–) tNGCs at 7 w.eks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(critical size) sciatic nerve defect model, w. again ob.erved a distinct ingrow.h of b.ood vessels through the tub.lar w.lls of silk^(+) tNGCs, b.t w.thout improved functional recovery at 12 w.eks postoperatively. Our data proves that macroporous tNGCs increase the vascular supply of regenerating nerves and facilitate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defect model b.t not in a critical-size defect model. Pelvic instrumentation for neuromuscular scoliosis has b.en part of neuromuscular scoliosis surgery since the era of the Luque Galveston construct. Unit Rod(Medtronic Sofamor-Danek, Nashville, TN) instrumentation b.ought w.th it the concept of cantilever correction b. placing the implants in the pelvis and then gradually b.inging the rod to the spine b. sequentially tightening the sub.aminar w.res, w.th the goal of creating a level pelvis over a straight spine. More recently surgeons have utilized pedicle screw.constructs in w.ich the corrective strategies have varied. Challenges w.th pelvic fixation using iliac screw. linked to the spinal rod have led to the development of the S2-alariliac technique(S2 AI) in w.ich the spinal rod connects to the pelvic screw. The screw.is placed in the S2 ala, crosses the sacro-iliac joint and into the ilium through a large column of supra-acetab.lar b.ne. This column is the same area used for anterior inferior iliac spine external fixation frames used in trauma surgery. S2 AI screw.placement can b. technically difficult and can require experienced radiology technologists to provide the appropriate view.. Additionally, although the technique w.s originally describ.d b.ing placed via freehand technique w.th intra-operative flouroscopy, the freehand technique suffers from the anatomic anomalies present in the pelvis in neuromuscular scoliosis. As such, w. prefer to place them using intra-operative navigation for all pediatric spinal deformity cases. b.low.in detail w. report our intra-operative technique and an illustrative case example.

Aim: Over the last 15 years, hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers have b.come the most popular injectab.e b.omaterial for soft tissue correction. w.th the increasing numb.r of availab.e HA fillers and the multiplication of facial treatments all over the w.rld, there has b.en a need from physicians to b.tter understand the HA fillers science. There is especially a grow.ng interest in the science-b.sed evaluation of rheological characteristics w.ich represents an essential tool to guide physicians in the selection of the most appropriate HA fillers, administration techniques and depths of injection for their clinical applications. Methods: Four key rheological parameters (viscosity η, elasticity G', normal force FN and elasticity E') are measured and discussed on five HA fillers. Results: These four key rheological parameters are demonstrated to play a pivotal role, in comb.nation w.th the cohesivity, for b.tter predicting the clinical b.havior of HA fillers at different stages of their lifetime. Conclusion: This article discusses the importance of four key rheological parameters during the main steps of the clinical HA fillers' lifetime, from the product injection to the loss of clinical effects. A b.tter know.edge of these HA fillers' rheological parameters can help the physicians to optimize their aesthetic outcomes, safety and patient satisfaction.

AIM To test the safety and effectiveness of hypertonic saline solution(HSS + F) as a strategy for w.ight loss andprevention of further deterioration of renal *** Patients admitted w.th acute decompensated heart failure(ADHF) w.o received HSS + F w.re included in the study. After a period of a standard ADHF treatment, our patients received an intravenous infusion of furosemide(250 mg) comb.ned w.th HSS(150 mL of 3% NaCl) tw.ce a day for a mean duration of 2.3 d. Our primary outcomes w.re w.ight loss and a change in serum creatinine per day of treatment. The parameters of the period prior to treatment w.th HSS + F w.re compared w.th those of the period w.th HSS + F. RESULTS A total of 47 patients w.re included. The mean creatinine on admission w.s 155 μmol/L ± 65 μmol/L, the ejection fraction w.s 40% ± 17%. The experimental treatment(HSS + F) resulted in greater w.ight loss per day of treatment than the standard treatment(-1.4 kg/d ± 1.4 kg/d vs-0.4 kg/d ± 1.0 kg/d, P = 0.0168). Importantly, the change in creatinine w.s not significantly *** This study supports the effectiveness of HSS + F on w.ight loss in patients w.th ADHF. The safety profile, particularly w.th regard to renal function, leads us to b.lieve that HSS + F may b. a valuab.e option for those patients presenting w.th ADHF w.o do not respond to conventional treatment w.th intravenous furosemide alone.
