Global changes explain the long-term demographic trend of the Eurasian common lizard (Squamata: Lacertidae)

The demographic trend of a species depends on the dynamics of its local populations,which can be compromised by local or by global ***,the relevance of local and global phenomena has rarely been investigated ***,we tested whether local phenomena compromised a species'demographic trend using the Eurasian common lizard Zootoca vivipara,the terrestrial reptile exhibiting the widest geographic distribution,as a model *** analyzed the species'ancient demographic trend using genetic data from its 6 allopatric genetic clades and tested whether its demographic trend mainly depended on single clades or on global *** vivipara's effective population size increased since 2.3 million years ago and started to increase steeply and continuously from 0.531 million years *** growth rate exhibited 2 maxima,both occurring during global climatic changes and important vegetation changes on the northern *** population size and growth rate were negatively correlated with global surface temperatures,in line with global parameters driving long-term demographic *** vivipara's ancient demography was neither driven by a single clade,nor by the 2 clades that colonized huge geographic areas after the last *** low importance of local phenomena,suggests that the experimentally demonstrated high sensitivity of this species to short-term ecological changes is a response in order to cope with short-term and local *** suggests that what affected its long-term demographic trend the most,were not these local changes/responses,but rather the important and prolonged global climatic changes and important vegetation changes on the northern hemisphere,including the opening up of the forest by humans.

Novel approaches for the development of peripheral nerve regenerative therapies

Schwann cells are the myelinating glial cells of the peripheral nervous system（PNS）.By establishing lipid-rich myelin sheaths around large-caliber axons,they ensure that electrical signal transmission is accelerated-a process referred to as saltatory signal *** from this prominent physiological function,these cells also exert important pathophysiological roles in PNS injuries or dis- eases. In contrast to the central nervous system （CNS）, the adult PNS retains a remarkably high degree of intrinsic re- generation. As a consequence, transected axons and dam- aged myelin sheaths can be repaired and nerve functional- ity can be restored. This spontaneous regenerative capacity depends on （inter） actions of macrophages, neurons, and Schwann cells.

Implementation and application of PyNE sub-voxel R2S for shutdown dose rate analysis

PyNE R2S is a mesh-based R2S implementation with the capability of performing shutdown dose rate(SDR)analysis directly on CAD geometry with Cartesian or tetrahedral *** supports advanced variance reduction for fusion energy ***,the assumption of homogenized materials of PyNE R2S with a Cartesian mesh throughout a mesh voxel introduces an approximation in the case where a voxel covers multiple non-void *** work implements a sub-voxel method to add fldelity to PyNE R2S with a Cartesian mesh during the process of activation and photon source sampling by performing independent inventory calculations for each cell within a mesh voxel and using the results of those independent calculations to sample the photon source more *** sub-voxel R2S has been verifled with the Frascati Neutron Generator(FNG)-ITER and ITER computational shutdown dose rate benchmark *** results for sub-voxel R2S show satisfactory agreement with the experimental values or reference *** sub-voxel R2S has been applied to the shutdown dose rate calculation of the Chinese Fusion Engineering Testing Reactor(CFETR).In conclusion,sub-voxel R2S is a reliable tool for SDR calculation and obtains more accurate results with the same voxel size than voxel R2S.

With the goal of accelerating the design and discovery of metal–organic frameworks(MOFs)for electronic,optoelectronic,and energy storage applications,we present a dataset of predicted electronic structure properties for thousands of MOFs carried out using multiple density functional *** to more accurate hybrid functionals,we find that the widely used PBE generalized gradient approximation(GGA)functional severely underpredicts MOF band gaps in a largely systematic manner for semi-conductors and insulators without magnetic ***,an even larger and less predictable disparity in the band gap prediction is present for MOFs with open-shell 3d transition metal *** regards to partial atomic charges,we find that different density functional approximations predict similar charges overall,although hybrid functionals tend to shift electron density away from the metal centers and onto the ligand environments compared to the GGA point of *** more significant differences in partial atomic charges are observed when comparing different charge partitioning *** conclude by using the dataset of computed MOF properties to train machine-learning models that can rapidly predict MOF band gaps for all four density functional approximations considered in this work,paving the way for future high-throughput screening *** encourage exploration and reuse of the theoretical calculations presented in this work,the curated data is made publicly available via an interactive and user-friendly web application on the Materials Project.

background This study evaluates the validity of Alvarado Score in predicting disease severity and the development of postoperative complications in pediatric *** This is a retrospective,bicentered study on pediatric patients with emergency appendicectomy performed from 2006 to *** relationship of Alvarado Score(low:1-4,medium:5-6,high:7-10)and operative findings/complications was *** A total of 316 patients were included and the median age on admission was 10.8 *** overall median score was 8.***.13.3%,20.2%,and 66.5%of patients had low,medium,and high risk scores,respectively.36.1%of patients had complicated appendicitis and the median score was comparable with that of the uncomplicated cases(7.0 vs 7.4,p=0.21).More complicated cases were found in the medium-risk group(high vs medium vs low=29.7%vs 61.4%vs 31.0%,p=0.01).Rebound tenderness had the highest positive predictive value(65%)for complicated *** complications were found in 16.5%of patients with a higher median score(7.87 vs 5.8,p=0.01).Conclusion Alvarado Score does not predict disease severity but postoperative *** with medium risk score should also be treated promptly for the risk of having complicated *** tenderness may be a signal for complicated appendicitis and should be properly examined.

Modeling and measuring glucose diffusion and consumption by colorectal cancer spheroids in hanging drops using integrated biosensors

As 3D in vitro tissue models become more pervasive,their built-in nutrient,metabolite,compound,and waste gradients increase biological relevance at the cost of analysis *** these gradients and the resulting metabolic heterogeneity requires invasive and time-consuming *** alternative is using electrochemical biosensors and measuring concentrations around the tissue model to obtain size-dependent metabolism *** our hanging-dropintegrated enzymatic glucose biosensors,we conducted current measurements within hanging-drop compartments hosting spheroids formed from the human colorectal carcinoma cell line *** developed a physics-based mathematical model of analyte consumption and transport,considering(1)diffusion and enzymatic conversion of glucose to form hydrogen peroxide(h_(2)O_(2))by the glucose-oxidase-based hydrogel functionalization of our biosensors at the microscale;(2)h_(2)O_(2)oxidation at the electrode surface,leading to amperometric h_(2)O_(2)readout;(3)glucose diffusion and glucose consumption by cancer cells in a spherical tissue model at the microscale;(4)glucose and h_(2)O_(2)transport in our hangingdrop compartments at the macroscale;and(5)solvent evaporation,leading to glucose and h_(2)O_(2)*** model relates the measured currents to the glucose concentrations generating the *** low limit of detection of our biosensors(0.4±0.1μM),combined with our current-fitting method,enabled us to reveal glucose dynamics within our *** measuring glucose dynamics in hanging-drop compartments populated by cancer spheroids of various sizes,we could infer glucose distributions within the spheroid,which will help translate in vitro 3D tissue model results to in vivo.

Effects of experimental season of prescribed fire and nutrient addition on structure and function of previously grazed grassland

A six-year descriptive epidemiological study of human coronavirus infections in hospitalized patients in hong kong

We conducted a six-year epidemiological study on human coronaviruses(hCoVs) circulating in hong kong, using 8275 nasopharyngeal samples from patients with acute respiratory tract infections. hCoVs were detected in 77(0.93%) of the samples by a pan-hCoV RT-PCR assay. The most frequently detected hCoV species was hCoV-OC43(0.58%), followed by hCoV-229E(0.15%),hCoV-hkU1(0.13%) and hCoV-NL63(0.07%). hCoVs were detected throughout the study period(September 2008–August 2014), with the highest detection rate from September 2010 to August2011(22/1500, 1.47%). Different seasonal patterns of each hCoV species in hong kong were ***-OC43 was predominant in the fall and winter, whereas hCoV-hkU1 showed peak activity in winter, with a few cases occurred in spring and summer. hCoV-229 E mainly occurred in winter and spring, while hCoV-NL63 was predominant in summer and autumn. hCoVs most commonly infect the elderly and young children, with median age of 79.5 years(range, 22 days to 95 years).Intriguingly, the detection rate of hCoV-OC43 in the age group of > 80 years(26/2380, 1.09%) was significantly higher than that in the age group of 0–10 years(12/2529, 0.47%)(P hese data provides new insight into the epidemiology of coronaviruses.
