Background:The management of suspected kidney stone disease in pregnancy is *** cases of persistent flank pain and where investigations may have rendered equivocal results,ureteroscopy(URS)is a recognized diagnostic and therapeutic *** study aimed to investigate the safety and outcomes associated with performing URS during pregnancy,as the technique has evolved over the past 4 decades at our center.Materials and Methods:We performed a retrospective analysis of pregnant patients who underwent URS at our tertiary center be-tween 1984 and *** of interest included anesthetic approach,operative time,hospital stay,and complications.Results:Eighty-seven pregnant patients underwent 96 URS procedures,and 60％(n=57)of these procedures were performed during the third ***,58％(n=56)of the procedures were achieved with local anesthesia and light *** the most recent decade,the latter was successfully carried out in 97％of the procedures,with the remainder occurring under spinal anesthesia as per patient ***,57％(n=50)of the whole study group had ureteral calculi found at the time of surgery and in 88％(n=44)of these cases,fragmentation/extraction was *** remainder had insertion of ureteral stent with definitive clearance de-ferred until *** operative time and postprocedure hospital stay was 33 minutes(range,7-100 minutes)and 2.2 days(range,0-16 days),*** overall intraoperative and postoperative complication rates were 2％and 11％,***-ing the final decade,the latter improved to 6％and all adverse events were minor(Clavien Ⅰ/Ⅱ),with the exception of a single ***-garding exit strategy,ureteral stent was placed in 42％(n=40)of the procedures,23％(n=22)had ureteral catheter inserted,and the remainder(35％,n=34)had none.Conclusions:Ureteroscopy can be safely performed during pregnancy using anesthetic approach with local anesthesia and light *** of a

Objective The objective of this narrative review was to search the existing literature for studies reporting measures to minimize radiation use during endoscopic management of stone disease and present ways of reducing the exposure of both patients and operating room *** A literature review in PubMed was performed to identify studies describing protocols or measures to reduce radiation received during endourological procedures from January 1970 to August *** studies were those that reported outcomes for ureteroscopy or percutaneous nephrolithotripsy regarding measures to minimize radiation doses used intraoperatively,performed either in real-life theatres or using *** comparative and non-comparative studies were deemed *** Protection can be achieved initially at the level of diagnosis and follow-up of patients,which should be done following an algorithm and choice of more conservative imaging *** protocols,which follow principles for minimized fluoroscopy use should be implemented and urologists as well as operating room staff should be continuously trained regarding radiation damage and protection *** protective lead equipment remains a cornerstone for personnel protection,while configuration of the operating room and adjusting X-ray machine settings can also significantly reduce radiation *** There are specific measures,which can be implemented to reduce radiation *** include avoiding excessive use of computed tomography scans and X-rays during diagnosis and follow-up of urolithiasis *** protocols with minimal fluoroscopy use can be *** training regarding dangers of radiation plays also a major *** and maintenance of protective equipment and setting up the operating room properly also serve towards this *** settings can be customized appropriately and finally continuously monitoring of exposure with dosimeters can be adopted.

Biogeography of the Shimba Hills ecosystem herpetofauna in Kenya

The Shimba Hills ecosystem along the south coast of Kenya is a key East African biodiversity hotspot. Historically, it is biogeographically assignable to the East African coastal biome. We examined the current Shimba Hills herpetofauna and their zoogeographical affinities to the coastal forests and nearby Eastern Arc Mountains biodiversity hotspots. The key studied sites included the Shimba Hills National Reserve, forest reserves, Kaya forests, and adjacent private land. Data on herpetofaunal richness were obtained from recent field surveys, literature, and specimens held at the National Museums of Kenya, Herpetology Section Collection, Nairobi. The Makadara, Mwele, and Longo- Mwagandi forests within the Shimba Hills National Reserve hosted the highest number of unique and rare species. Generally, the forest reserves and Kaya forests were important refuges for forest- associated species. On private land, Mukurumudzi Dam riparian areas were the best amphibian habitat and were host to three IUCN （Red List） Endangered- EN amphibian species, namely, Boulengerula changamwensis, Hyperolius rubrovermiculatus, and Afrixalus sylvaticus, as well as one snake species Elapsoidea nigra. Using herpetofauna as zoogeographic indicators, the Shimba Hills were determined to be at a crossroads between the coastal forests （13 endemic species） and the Eastern Arc Mountains （seven endemic species）. Most of the Eastern Arc Mountains endemic species were from recent records, and thus more are likely to be found in the future. This ＇hybrid＇ species richness pattern is attributable to the hilly topography of the Shimba Hills and their proximity to the Indian Ocean. This has contributed to the Shimba Hills being the richest herpetofauna area in Kenya, with a total of 89 and 38 reptile and amphibian species, respectively. Because of its unique zoogeography, the Shimba Hills ecosystem is undoubtedly a key biodiversity area for conservation investment.

Differential Impacts of Wind Energy on Sustainable Power Generation in Ghana

Ghana has a yearly development interest for power at a rate of 83.8% in 2010, and to 12% from 2020 to 2040 but this opportunity has been farfetched with the shocks in energy generation during 1983, 1994, 1997-98, and 2006-2007 era pushing the energy sector into crisis and a consequent adverse impact of 1.5% to GDP. This study, therefore, investigated the differential impacts of wind energy to sustainable power generation in Ghana by assessing the determinants of energy supply, energy demand and supply mix for energy development, the capacity of the energy sector to develop wind power and possible challenges in developing wind power energy in Ghana. An exploratory design that adopted both qualitative and quantities approaches was applied to the study. The study population involving 34 sample sizes was accessed from a 46 population made up of management/ministers of energy and counsellors or energy experts. Impact of Sulfidation of Silver Nanoparticles on Established<i>P. aeruginosa Biofilm</i>

Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs), one of the most common types of nanomaterials in medical fields and consumer products, are known to have antimicrobial effects;these materials also undergo a series of chemical and biological transformations in the environment. Although the pristine form of silver nanoparticles has been studied, less is known about the impacts of the transformed Ag-NPs on biological systems. This knowledge gap hinders the progress of effectively assessing the impacts of Ag-NPs on the environment and human health. In this study, we demonstrate that the most common form of transformed Ag-NPs, sulfidized silver nano-particles (Ag2S-NPs), show less damage on established Pseudomonas aeruginosa GFP (ATCC? 10145 GFP?) biofilm than the pristine form of the nanoparticle. At a dosage of 0.625 mg/L, the total biomass in the biofilm decreased 64% after being exposed to Ag-NPs and 44% after exposure to Ag2S-NPs. Live biofilms were also interrogated. We observed high reduction in live population for biofilm exposed to Ag-NPs and relatively low reduction by Ag2S-NPs at exposure concentrations higher than 0.625 mg/L. Compared with Ag-NPs, the lower solubility of Ag2S-NPs results in less Ag+ diffusion into established biofilms. Our results suggest that the sulfidation of Ag-NPs reduces their impacts on established biofilms, indicating that the transformed Ag-NPs may have less environmental or human health risks.
